Is it possible to re-animate those two episodes into 4K?

Was EP 1 shot on film? If so we could get a proper 4K HD release. But then again were the cgi effects done in 1.5K?

The chances of any studio out there redoing effects that are 2k already is very, very slim. There's nothing in it for them since consumers barely even care about 2k BD resolution and it would be massively disappointing. This is going to come up a lot the next couple decades I bet.

And yes, Episode One was shot on film and could have a 4k rescan, which would help it a LOT since the BD looks like trash. Whether Disney ever sees a point in doing so is another matter. Episodes Two and Three will never, ever, look better than they do now.

We get an SE to sort the "bad" effects in the OT, and then get this:

Clone wars looks better than this:

I am shocked he didn't do a special edition of this stuff.

This was at the cutting edge of visual effects when it was released and paved the way for the great effects we see today. It was (and still is) too soon and too expensive to do a complete overhaul of the visual effects for a special edition.

Sorry, but Clones looked bad when it came out. Even the reviews mentioned how it looked like a bad video game.

Yep, it was/is shocking the number of bad effects shots in AOTC. Of all the Star wars films I'd say the bad effects shots far outnumber the good ones. The one that always sticks out to me is Count Dooku riding the swoop speeder thing towards the end of the film. Looked like kids color forms with him stuck on a flat background.

Yes. Not only poor resolution and detail in many scenes, but also way too damn much CGI with no balance or counterpoint. "We are so proud we built no clone trooper outfits!" Well good for you, idiot.

Lucas even says in the commentary the CGI all looks photo-realistic. It's baffling to me.

There was a lot of model work in Clones but the compositing was just bad.

Clones is always going to look like #$%! because it was shot with very shoddy HD cameras. Sure they were "top of the line" in 2001/2 but were way behind the capabilities of film at the time. Too bad Lucas didn't decide to make some of his short "experimental films" using that technology instead of a Star Wars film. Still as bad as everything else is in the film the only thing that probably could've saved it in my eyes is if it did contain good F/X and cinematography.

That film's camera quality was the least of its problems. Forget starting with a decent camera, he should've started with a decent script.

It's funny because even back then I was like, couldn't he make some clone trooper suits up and hire some actors instead of pasting in cartoon clone troopers. I understand when you want to CGI an alien, but not a dude in armor. He probably thought that rubbery looking Obi-Wan jumping out of a spacecraft in the hangar at the start of Revenge of the Sith looked photo-realistic too!.

I agree, but at least if it had nicer visuals it would have at least a few more saving graces. The only good thing other than a few of the action sequences is the score by John Williams, and even that's probably the worst SW score he ever did (the love theme sounds way too much like Hook for my taste).

I never liked a lot of the CG in Attack of the Clones.

Does he even know? Did George Lucas at that point even knew or just he said "**** it, we'll just add a shitload of CG at that scene and hope that noone notices."

Finally bought the original trilogy on blu-ray.

Was surprised at how much DNR was present in New Hope.

Empire and ROTJ looked great though.

Oh. Some prequels bashing (AOTC in this case). What a surprise!

There was no directing in this scene. George said years ago he told them to just mime a fight, and he'd digitally add people around the actors. No one was told "ok now you walk here, then there" they did their own thing. So the actors really directed that scene, not the director.

It's funny, maybe it's maturity or the passage of time but TPM has grown on me over the years. I recently watched the Blu Ray synced up to the commentary by Sam Witwer and the Rebel Force Radio podcast guys, and it made me reconsider the movie in a favourable light. On the other hand, AOTC seems to get worse and worse as it gets older. It's clear that Lucas was chopping and changing the movie right down to the wire, and that shows in the unfinished looking FX, the mangling of John Williams score, and the questionable editorial decisions (cutting out most of Christopher Lee's role for that droid factory sequence, removing the scenes of Padme and her family which have a warmth that the rest of the film lacks and which offer a pointed dramatic contrast to the family situation Anakin finds himself in later in the film). The Obi Wan / Kamino scenes are cool, the asteroid chase is fun, the Lars homestead scenes are okay. That's about it.
