Avengers was finished at 2K, like all the rest of the MCU movies. Star Wars appears to be getting a true 4K finish, as are several other 'event' movies this year: Jurassic World, Rogue Nation, Terminator Genisys, Mockingjay pt 2. The movies might turn out to be 'meh', but that'll be a killer line-up of titles for UHD BD to get started with.

Can't be. The one he built looked nothing like that.

As another poster mentioned, in the Timothy Zahn "Thrawn" trilogy of books, Luke's right hand and the old Anakin lightsaber were recovered and the Emperor saved it. If the Emperor didn't get Luke to come to the dark side, he planned on using Luke's severed right hand to create a clone. Grand Admiral Thrawn used it to create a clone and the clone used Luke's old lightsaber. Luke eventually got back his old lightsaber and gave it to a potential student (not Leia). It's interesting to see what parts of the old EU are being used in this new trilogy.

Why does every single thing out of his mouth have to be a contradiction?
Gotta love when prequel/Lucas bashing ignores things like the fact that fancy lightsaber fights simply weren't possible in 1977, not to mention that neither character in Star Wars had used a lightsaber, let alone fought someone, for years/decades. And yeah Dooku, Palpatine, and Yoda may be old and surprisingly spry, but we do also see several Jedi in their prime like Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Anakin, Mace Windu, etc., so Lucas didn't really break his promise at all. For the people who dislike the prequels, would having the older characters fight with slow, stiff movements really have improved the movies at all for you? Wouldn't you rather see an exciting, dynamic lightsaber fight?

The original lightsaber fights were far more exciting and dynamic than the boring, overlong fights in the prequels.

To each their own. The original fights may have been more dramatic but the action sequences in the prequels were some of the most exciting cinematic moments I've ever experienced. The Duel of the Fates and Yoda vs. Dooku, in particular.

You mean Sonic the Hedgehog vs Count Dooku? Beyond silly IMHO.

In the Empire Strikes Back, Yoda showed you don't have to be a badass to be a powerful and wise Jedi Master. Use your mind, not your brute strength.

The prequels ruined all the great Joseph Campbell influences on the series.

The originals looked more like real sword fights and the light saber was "secondary" to the power of the force! We did not need to see Yoda flipping all around to know just what a bad a* he was. We already knew he was the minute Luke first met him.

I mean I understand the dramatic importance of those scenes in the OT, but I was 11 when I saw Yoda wield a lightsaber - it's hard not to feel like childhood giddiness all over again when I re-watch the movie every couple of years.

I always thought of Yoda in EP 2 & 3 as a Leprachaun on speed.

I think "authentic" is the word, not "dramatic".

There is just no "thrill" in the lightsaber sequences in the PT for me because it's all complete digital trickery. Except for Ray Parks, everyone else is either a completely fake digital character or had their heads replaced on other folks bodies.

That said, I do enjoy the Yoda fights - but in the way I enjoy any animated sequence, not a well-executed live-action fight scene.

Hey everybody. I hope someone can help me. I have been rewatching the original trilogy in the despecialized editions and then trying to watch all of the extras on all formats. I pulled out my old laserdisc boxset of the definitive trilogy and I think my old laserdisc player is not working very well anymore or the last disc of empire is messed up. I can't watch all of the empire supplemental materials. I know I have a problem trying to watch all of this stuff, but does anyone know where I can find the laserdisc supplementals? I looked on youtube and saw some of the first movies extras, but no empire. Any help would be appreciated.

From Clones onwards I'd say that's true about the digital doubles - although some would say that that was necessary in order to have Christopher Lee, Ian McDiarmid and Yoda bowling around like dervishes* - but in Phantom Menace the combatants look real because they *are* real. Every time I watch the movie I always have to rewind the bit when Obi-Wan goes after Maul when the energy beam goes down because their footwork is amazing, and it's Ewan McGregor doing it too! (He's not doing the flips though, that's his double Andreas Petrides and the editing is deft enough to not need any face replacement.)

*although I'm not saying it was necessary to have them doing that in the first place, just that Lucas wanted them to fight without looking like geriatrics so the digital doubles were a given at that point.

I really like the lightsaber fights in the prequels. They're the highlights of the movies to me in many ways. That said I don't like the Yoda one much, I think they should have made him more of a powerful wizard type character who is so strong in other ways he doesn't need a lightsaber. Like he could deflect gunshots with his hands or whatever.

They did that in the build-up to the Dooku fight. But sometimes, you just gotta rock the lightsaber.

Had the film taken place hundreds of years earlier, I would've been more okay with Yoda jumping around like a jack-rabbit. That, and scenes of Doku and Palpatine doing back flips are silly, but not enough in and of itself to make me hate the movies. They make plenty of other mistakes in other ways.

I always loved that Yoda was the only Jedi able to reflect force lightning tho. Some of my friends actually thought Yoda was generating his own force lightning, so I wonder how many other people thought that.

Not to mention the fight choreography itself is focused on the combatants flashily bouncing blades aimed nowhere near each others' bodies.

There, I adjusted it so nobody will complain since Whedon is a god who is perfect.

Nitpicks and double standards have sunk this thread below the mantle.
