I saw the movie back in theaters and hated it, so I dunno if I'll bother rewatching it even though I've mostly forgotten it. Tried watching the first episode of the show on Netflix last night and just couldn't get past how much the battle droids talk, and how all their dialogue is just annoying ("Who's Yoda? The little green guy? Don't worry, we got this."). Gonna take some effort to keep pushing through, I still love the Genndy Tartakovsky one way too much.

They're quickie internet shorthand for god's sake, there is no right or wrong. People almost always skip the first article when making these shorthand acronyms. Don't be silly.

This thread is like self-parody at this point.

I'm in your camp.

Technically we are talking about mnemonics, not acronyms. The latter has to actually form a pronounceable word, not just abbreviate a phrase; e.g., MADD and NOW are acronyms, ESP is a mnemonic.

Acronyms can be useful since they are often recognized when spoken aloud. Mnemonics can also be recognizable when everyone agrees on what they should be since it speeds up typing. Otherwise we have the situation we are now debating, and thread newbies can take a while to catch up on the discussion when they see an unfamiliar mnemonic.

My practice (and it need not be anyone else's) is to use all caps to indicate a title, but I use a select, representative word as you do, i.e. EMPIRE, JEDI, etc. I have achieved the goal of reducing the load on my fingertips while still creating a reference that most would easily understand without explanation.

Well, if you want to get picky I'd say that they're not mnemonics either because they're hardly memory aids, they're simple initialisms which *do* fall under the acronym umbrella depending on what reference source you go by.

See, kids? This is the true power of Star Wars, to get people arguing about every tiny detail. Thank you George.

I get lost sometimes, I'm okay with Star Wars movies and James Bond movies, but I wander into some threads and have no idea what people talking about (which probably isn't a surprise!), I did mention it to someone and they said that's the way they roll on some obscure fan-forum with 150 members ... so tough shit to the rest of us. It didn't help that they were giving shows they're own subtitles and abbreviating them too.

At the end of the day if people start talking like the kids in Sleepless in Seattle, then I'm going to be SOOL and LITD ...

Originally "TESB" was used for The Empire Strikes Back but it was always Lucas' original vision to have the "T" dropped and it just be "ESB".

As someone who actually reads a lot about Star Wars, and various Star Wars sites, if i saw TESB as an acronym randomly somewhere I wouldn't know what it was. Looks like some medical term.

Now no matter where I saw ESB, I'd know what it meant.

ANH/ESB/ROJ

So simple, a three-letter acronym is always better than four or more - particularly when in a thread about the topic and anyone who doesn't know what ESB is could easily figure it out. I mean, when talking verbally about the films - do people really say out the entire title "The Empire Strikes Back"? No, they say "Empire" or "Empire Strikes Back". Putting the T is oddly formal and just doesn't flow.

It's basic English, articles like "the" or "a" are usually not included when arranging items in alphabetical order or when using acronyms, unless you need it for effect (like creating an associated word with the acronym).

You must choose, can't have it both ways.

Georges' Original Unaltered Triology. It's a term used to refer to the 2006 bonus DVDs only. Meaning "this is the version of the OUT he wanted us to have, because he just doesn't care"

If they were presented properly, in anamorphic and with better PQ, I'm sure people wouldn't be calling it "GOUT"

Phantom Clones (wage) Revenge Wars (against) Empire (of) Jedi.

[Show spoiler] And yes, I would definitely see a movie with that title
