Remember, Disney now owns the rights to all of Star Wars. Forever. They aren't just going to put out everything from Star Wars you've ever wanted right away. It'll be a step-by-step process, and honestly, from a business perspective, it makes sense.

First you make extra money by doing the quickest and easiest thing possible: taking the existing HD versions you already have from the Blu-Ray release and selling them as digital releases.

THEN you plan to release new versions of the movies. I personally believe they are already planning on doing new 4K versions of the movies, possibly BOTH the UOT and the original 1997 Special Editions, seeing as those versions are what are on the original film negative. From there, they can restore the UOT using other elements or piecing back in the original footage.

Hell, maybe they'll also bring Lucas on or people involved in the film's production and do some kind of elaborate "Final Cut" like Blade Runner. The possibilities are endless with Disney in control-- they obviously want to make as much money as possible on Star Wars, and the movies out thus far are ripe for doing multiple, different releases.
Well we've all seen that article about the 4K versions of the films done by Reliance (although those might just be 4K up-conversions) and there was that rumor not too long ago about a new version of the movie which has the Han/Greedo encounter reverted back to it's original form. So maybe that's from the 4K version (if this supposed new version really exists of course).

And like I said, it'll be most interesting to see what will become of the 2004/2011 alterations when and if the newer masters are made available, since from what I read, those alterations were created entirely in the 2004 masters.

But in regards to the UOT, I think a safe bet for now would be 2017, because it'll be both the release of episode 8 and the 40th anniversary of the original film.

But then they stopped selling 3D blu's of films they released theatrically in 3D, in that case the works been done but they don't want to offer too many versions it seems (I know it's niche, sadly plenty of Star Wars fans consider us UOT fans niche as well). That shows they don't like to saturate the market with too many options, they still do that darned vault thing even though you can import everyone of their films that are vaulted.

If Lucasfilm has control of such a thing, like the situation with Marvel, it's even more unlikely since Lucas was quite adamant about not putting out the UOT and there's likely plenty of loyalty regarding that matter at Lucasfilm. Heck, the Ferngully rip-off Strange Magic wasn't even released at all on blu, not sure if that's Disney or Lucasfilm's work.

I hope I'm eventually wrong, I've been waiting to buy the UOT in good quality forever, so much so, I've held off on buying the current set (at least until it drops below $60 new, then I might cave).
Well, I'm not sure about their 3D output, since I don't have 3D so don't pay attention to that. Maybe the market for 3D Blu-Ray is just so small now that it's not profitable. I don't believe that would be the case for a restored UOT, despite a few naysayers I've read here.

As for Lucasfilm loyalty, I seriously doubt that is a problem for a couple of reasons: 1) Although no doubt they have respect for George Lucas, they have already shown that they are going their own way and doing what works for them-- this was proven to me when Lucas revealed they pretty much threw out all of his ideas and story treatments for the new trilogy.

2) Even if they WERE that loyal to Lucas' wishes, he pretty much softened up on the original versions towards the end anyway, saying things like his new versions take priority over the "classic" versions. That's quite a bit different than 10 years ago when he was saying the films were rough drafts and would deteriorate on VHS and be "erased." I doubt Lucas would even care that they put out the UOT. It's not like Lucasfilm tried to perform some kind of reversal and put the "Complete Saga" editions out of print or something.

Standing around smiling for a few seconds? Not so much.
Now you see Peter, there's that tone of yours again. Telling people that it shouldn't bother them as if they don't know any better or something like that. That's rude.

The change does bother a lot people and with good reason, they hate Hayden's performance as Anakin and hate seeing his head crudely pasted over Sebastian Shaw's body during one of the best moments of the entire saga and delivering a creepy, unpleasant smile at Luke and company. And all because of some BS explanation that Lucas gives about how the force handles your spirit when you die.

And as has been said a billion times, it wouldn't bother people so much if they had the option to see the other version in high quality, which of course they don't. Why is it so hard for you to understand that? I mean it's fine if it doesn't bother you, we all have our own preferences. But you at least got the version you wanted on blu ray. Other people are shit out of luck unless they go the pirate route.

You see Peter that is the one change that should bother everyone, even the people that hate the UOT like yourself. HC should not be inserted into a film that he himself is not old enough to remember during it's theatrical run. It's kind of like those early 90's coke commercials where they inserted great film/music stars long gone into advertising the product. And to make matters worse you can see where it was a "cheap" insertion (notice) how his head moves in an unnatural way. And the cherry on top of the scene his creepy crazed look on his face. Like he would be standing in front of a van that says Free Candy or something.

If you got to come back as your young self after slaughtering children while the other two are old and decrepit you would have a smart ass smirk on you face too.

To be honest I'm not too interested in the special features which is why I bought the prequels and OT separately on BD at two different times instead of buying the Complete Saga set. I still have all of the two disc DVD prequels, how much more special material for the prequels is on the Saga set that isn't on those DVDs?

The special features for the complete set are pretty lame anyway. What you want is the Empire of Dreams documentary from the DVD trilogy set and the special feature discs from the prequels on DVD, which have great documentaries on them. That stuff plus the commentaries are all you'd ever need, really.

So what you're saying is that all I would really need to do is buy this disc and I'd be good? Makes me happy that I hung onto my prequel DVDs and that I bought the two BD sets separately. It ended up being cheaper to do with no real loss outside of the nice packaging the Complete Saga has.

Yeah, that disc has the best documentary on the making of the original trilogy on it. Nothing on the complete BD set comes close. The prequel DVDs each have one long documentary on them that is excellent (Phantom Menace's is better than the movie).

Don't get me wrong, there is some good stuff here and there in the complete BD set, but most of it is disappointing and even most hardcore fans would be all set with the DVD documentaries.

I saw this in the thread about the BD release of, um, Disney's other huge new movie in theaters this year (bold added for emphasis):

This way the retailers can tie in the DVD and Blu Ray release with the end of the toy line to make way for the Christmas toys.

Now, here's my theory. We know that there is a major Star Wars product launch coming to big box stores on Friday Septemer 4th (it's already been dubbed 'Force Friday' in the media). Toys, books, lego sets, you name it. Disney most likely will want to clear all the shelves of Marvel / Avengers product in your average Toys R Us and Wal Mart by then. An early Blu Ray release of Age of Ultron helps them do just that. That's why I'm going with August 4th as the release date.
If the stores are gonna be full of SW toys in early September, what BD or DVD release could possibly be tied with that, with (a) the existing OT/PT sets already pushed back to stores earlier in the year with the digital release and (b) TFA's theatrical release still over three months away?
