So, no Star Wars OT on Bluray announcement at Comic-con.
I guess the 3rd and final opportunity for an announcement this year will be before Episode 7 is released, but I doubt it.

We're heading for next year now, and who knows..
Maybe in 10 years we will be still here talking about a future release of the OT!

I know that. I was just letting them know the ComiCon SD wasn't the last time that they could announce it.
There is also ComiCon NY and D23 conventions

Best case scenario; The Ewok Adventures, Droids, Ewoks, and the Clone Wars Micro-Series (the latter through WB) get re-released on DVD in addition to the Ewok films and CW micro-series on Blu-ray.

Good to listen to.

They made it evident that they are not going to make the mistake of over-relying on CG and how it helps acting, as well. The number of British actors is a bonus too IMO and I am speaking as an American. Acting is taken more seriously over there and they are better trained. Over here, it really only takes a nice body and face to get you into movies - acting is secondary.

I think this movie is going to far exceed any of the prequels. Looking forward to it.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread, so I must ask: with the release of Episode VII this fall, does Disney have plans to re-release I-VI on BD, preferably in premium collector sets for each saga? The Fox releases from a few years back are obviously... not optimal.

The Clone Wars micro series seems to have been quietly 'disappeared' from the canon, like the Holiday Special. The DVD' s go for silly money nowadays. I wouldn't hold much hope for a reissue anytime soon.

No one knows, and it will be a massively popular thread when they do.

There's no specific information on a new Star Wars re-release right now. A lot of us were hoping Disney would have a restored UOT ready to put out before the release of Episode VII, but that's not the case (which isn't much of a surprise, really).

Also, count your lucky stars you didn't have to sit through the arguments about copyright ownership of the original film

Don't know what Disney/Lucasfilm (or Fox, for Ep. IV) are going to do with the materials -- whether they plan theatrical or blu-ray releases -- but from various contacts I have accrued at post houses in my twenty years as a DP in Los Angeles, I know the following facts:

1. There is definitely a 4k Restoration that has been done to the three "original trilogy" films. My contacts have seen this for themselves, first-hand.

2. Even though they're the "original trilogy", the 4K Restorations are NOT of the original theatrical releases. I don't have confirmation which Special Editions they are (1997, 2004 or 2011), but I do know for certain that they're not the originals.

Therefore, while I'm hoping for a better blu-ray release of the current editions within the next year, I'm not holding my breath for the "holy grail" GOUT anytime soon.

We can discuss what's canon and what's not for hours. Still it's a good tie-in for VII.

And Imaginarion, Fox still has distribution (save for streaming) rights to I, II, III, V, and VI until May 2020. They'll own IV though for all perpetuity.

Well we know that the 2004 DVD editions onward were done entirely from a digital scan of the films, and thus couldn't receive new 4K scans. If they aren't the original versions, they'd have to be the 1997 Special Editions.

So we must then ask ourselves-- would they:
A) add back in the alterations from the Blu-Ray versions to make them the same editions just in better quality
B) Do another completely new revision of the films like Blade Runner: The Final Cut
C) Simply release a remastered version of the 1997 versions
D) Use the new scans of the Special Editions as a starting point for remastering the original versions.

Personally, I doubt "A" is a possibility, seeing as the alterations are all over the place in terms of quality and consistency. And I doubt they would do "C" and just release a 4K remaster of the 1997 versions. I'd bank of either "B" or "D."

The negatives - as reassembled in the wake of the 1997 restoration - are apparently conformed to the original Special Edition versions so it makes sense that what Lowry recently worked on wasn't the same as the latest edition nor the originals.

Using that as a base they can go in several different directions, your B and D looking like good choices (I'd LOVE a respectful new Final Cut in lieu of actual restored originals) but I still think A may yet happen: they'll just add the most recent changes back again.

I feel like they wouldn't mess with Lucas' versions unless it was to go back to the originals. They could pick any previous version and go with it, but I don't see them making an all new mix.
