Wow! Yeah, where has this guy been all his life? He acts like he has no idea what that is about. Maybe he is hoping for a big payday from Target or Hasbro. I wish that I was so easily offended. There is a lot more I would like to say but I would just get banned.

If the guy was genuinely outraged then I'd feel for him, but I don't think he was, re-enacting the event on his phone was a suggestion of that! The level headed parents just said they wouldn't buy the toy for their kids and they felt it was inappropriate. They didn't contact the local-media.

The 4+ Age Warning is a health and safety suggestion too, I don't think it regards actual toy content in this case, toys from Game of Thrones and Nightmare On Elmstreet have 17+ warnings on them (some are labelled This Is Not A Toy).

The only thing that raises eyebrows with the figure is the chain around her neck and it comes off:



Maybe Hasbro, could have though about packaging the toy slightly differently? but I imagine they went through all the right channels before releasing the figure and saw no issue with it.

So, you think the movie both calls attention to and dwells on the social questions and emotional impact of Leia being kept as a sex slave? 'Cause I certainly didn't see any of that last time I watched it. Hence subtle and vague. As a kid watching it I literally had no idea she was a sex slave or whatever else. It wasn't 'til I was an adult re-watching the movies for the first time in a while where I went "hmmmm."

Maybe I am bias as an 80's kid who grew up watching Arnie shoot people and save the girl, but I don't think kids really understand the nuances. They enjoy the action and effects and stuff and then when they re-watch the movie later as an adult they realize Robocop was satire and Leia might have been doing more than sitting there waiting for Luke (though honestly that brings up uncomfortable questions about why she is portrayed as being just fine afterward).

As a sociologist I certainly understand the "rape culture" questions about such portrayals, but Star Wars is one of a million in that regard.

Yes absolutely. And listen, I still don't get the nuances as a full grown man. Jabba clearly did not have a penis. Huge tongue though, and I still wonder if Bib Fortuna was somehow involved.

I am someone who never finds the human body offensive, or it's depiction exploitative, so the bikini thing is a non-issue for me. The only question would be is the idea of a woman being kept as a (presumably) sex slave on a chain too adult for kids to see? When I write it out like that I can see a case for it, but I think when you watch the movie it's so subtle and vague it never really connects with kids on that level.

Today though, with the internet and everyone having a bullhorn, it does perhaps pose a greater problem. Still, am I going to show my son Return of the Jedi when he's still a little kid? Hell yeah I am. So I dunno.

I agree with what you're saying, and my experience was much the same. As a kid I never really thought about the implications of Leia being kept as a slave in a skimpy outfit, and all the other scantily clad women who are kept around for Jabba's amusement. I think it works quite well in that regard; as a kid you can enjoy it on a more superficial level and then when you're an adult you discover these completely new layers to the whole thing. That's what makes Star Wars so effective in general, I think.

It's not that I think the movie should be censored or anything, or that kid's entertainment should never deal with the darker sides of the world we live in (sheltering them like that is probably worse if anything), it's just funny to think about.

Some people even thought the LEGO Oola minifigure released a few years ago was "inappropriate".
