thanks guys. Do you think I should wait and watch where pricing goes for the new set? I would assume the set and steelbooks might have Black Friday deals on the way?

Black Friday deals or perhaps a deal for Force Awakens week. Maybe movie cash. Who knows. Also the rumor is the original cuts are coming at some point, but that could be years.

I was just thinking of all the re-work that might be needed if they were to decide and release the unaltered versions instead of the SE (assuming the 2012 version is a SE incarnation - maybe not). Maybe they had a really nice 4K restoration of the SE and now decide to go for the unaltereds...imagine the change of priority causing a lot of re-work?

Okay, but I still think getting the 4K remasters done - irrespective of version, then - was to sweeten the pot. It's not a coincidence that LFL started gearing up for the sequel trilogy (the company not having had a theatrical hit in years) and remastered the OT just before the takeover.

Supposedly the OT was being mixed for Atmos, earlier this year. Whether ESB and ROTJ were receiving as nice a remaster that ANH was afforded for the BR that is unknown. I do hope that is the case.

Best regards,

Kinda puts into perspective the continual insistence of some people that "it's ALL fake! There's nothing wrong with CG!" when one of the godfathers of CG VFX (Abyss, T2, JP, SW SE's the prequels, etc) says otherwise.

[edit] Yes, he's still a big proponent of CG but makes it clear that he's not impressed with latter-day stuff because there simply isn't the time and/or money there to refine it into something special, which is my problem with CG in a nutshell: AMAZING tool when used right, but when it's not it looks faker than any practical effect would ever do, so there's always something to be said for getting a balance between the two IMO.

I agree with you pretty much across the board, but I've also got to qualify that with the fact that I get supreme joy out of watching old stop-motion and 'primitive' special effects. CG feels pretty antagonistic to my sensibilities since I consider myself a pretty analogue guy. BUT, I love it when it's done in the sense of a larger picture. I think it's great in Lord Of The Rings and Jackson's King Kong, Jurassic Park and Terminator 2. I think in the hands of a consumate filmmaker like Scorsese it's beautiful. The Aviator and Hugo know exactly what to do with it and I also think he waited until it had been fiddled with enough to get the kind of effects he was looking for.

Lucas (like Coppola) is the experimenter. He's the guy that brought most of this technology to the other directors we all hold in such high regard. I don't get that he cares much for anything beyond the technical and spiritual side of his stories- they're really only there to get across his larger ideas. They don't always make great movies. That said, I also think Lucas figured out what he was trying to say with CG with Revenge Of The Sith which works well for me. The other two may be missed opportunities, but I also am a lifelong devotee of Lucas for what he's created- however misguided some of it might appear in the bigger picture. Given my druthers- I'll always go for an older movie with practical effects, but someday somebody's gonna look back on these movies as the salad days of the medium.

There was a Tweet of some folks in a mixing stage, likely at Skywalker Sound, working on ROTJ, supposedly for an Atmos mix.

This is the first I have heard about Lucas actually doing any legwork on any OT redux. He admitted around the Blu-ray release that it was possible, but he just wasn't personally interested in it, or spending the money on it. From what I have heard, Disney started doing it the moment the purchase was finalized while they were in pre-pre-production for Episode VII.

Now, what is clear is that the reason so many extras were left out of the Blu-ray set was to have plenty of stuff for the future owner to be able to mine for future box sets. That appears totally premeditated. As was the Blu-ray release itself, which proved the continued vitality of the franchise.

As to the sequel trilogy - it had to happen, or Lucasfilm would have shut down. It simply could not sustain itself financially without going back into the "Star Wars Business" theatrically. He had a choice - do it himself, or sell the company off to someone who would.

I think that $34.96 is a pretty good deal. I bought my Original Trilogy Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Pack from Costco in January of 2014 for $31.49.

$31.49 is the cheapest I've ever seen The Star Wars Trilogy Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Pack priced at.

I'll definitely buy the Original Theatrical Unaltered Versions when they eventually get a Blu-Ray release. Day one purchase for sure!

A Lucasfilm Ltd Production. A 20th Century Fox Release.

All the original movies say © 1997 Lucasfilm Ltd. A New Hope doesn't say A 20th Century Fox Release at the end, just A Lucasfilm Ltd Production. The prequels have Release by 20th Century Fox Film Corporation at the end.

All the films have their 20th Century Fox fanfare removed apart from A New Hope.

So if we get the original unaltered trilogy on blu will the fox logo/fanfare still be on Empire and Jedi? I hope so

If we get them before 2020 then: yes.

(Disney won't edit the actual end credit roll-ups though, no matter what happens to the fanfares at the front. [edit] Which is similar to what Warners do with their MGM catalogue, they don't just remove all references to MGM. "But why would Disney take off the Fox fanfares then?" A valid question, and I can only think that it's because the franchise is now a going concern for Disney and essentially they don't want to "advertise" for a rival at the head of every movie, not if they can help it, unlike with a catalogue of old films that have little franchise potential so there's nothing for Warners to gain by airbrushing MGM's involvement.)
