Bingo. We KNOW there's been a 4K restoration of the trilogy, that's a fact. But what versions they are, when will Disney/LFL release them (via Fox ), all the rest of it is up in the air right now because there's this whole 'nuther movie that they've been working on. Instead of doing a Lucas and half-assing them out of the door as a means of promoting the upcoming film, Disney/LFL are smart enough to realise that there's a BIG anniversary coming up so they're keeping their powder dry.

FWIW I think they'll follow a similar release pattern as the SEs in 1997: release them in theaters in early 2017 where there's no box office competition (that period usually being a graveyard for studio movies) which will leave the summer of 2017 free for Ep VIII, and then they can all be released on home formats in time for the holidays in late 2017.

Well Fox didn't really "let" him keep it, like a "here you go, we don't want this" it was part of a deal Lucas made. Kind of like how Bill Gates made a deal with IBM that he'd retain ownership of the Windows software and just license it to IBM. IBM thought all the money was in the hardware, not the software, and they agreed. Lucas had a smiler deal with Fox, and Fox made the same mistake. BUT Fox didn't "let him keep it" as if it was a gift, they made a deal for the rights.

Ah, corporate synergy at its finest. (It was released by DMA as a promo for Inside Out's video release.) But then nobody does it better than Disney...

Hey folks!

Ever notice these "boxes" around the ships in almost all the Star Wars movies, even on the Blu-rays?

Well, I recently mentioned this to my brother who used to work at Pixar, and he told me that those boxes are less noticeable in the Movie Theater compared to Home Video as the Gamma in the Movie Theater is set to compensate for the lower light levels of the surrounding theater room compared to the screen. He suggested I adjust the Gamma Correction on our HDTV (I actually ended up turning it off), and it would be possible to effectively get rid of them.

It did the trick!

Just thought I'd share, in case that was something that bothered you too!

Yes, the gamma on the video versions is too low (comes out of black too fast) so you can see the garbage mattes, unlike with the much higher gamma and lower brightness of a theatrically projected print. I mentioned that in reference to the visible garbage mattes in Ghostbusters a while back: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...a#post10927553

Cool...it has bothered me since VHS lol.

“Garbage mattes, definitely. It really messed up the original VHS tapes of Star Wars because everybody thought it was that way when it came out in the theatres, but of course they weren’t. It was just the transfer wasn’t done quite right."

The only trouble with adjusting it at a global level in your display is that the VFX shots weren't necessarily going to have the same gamma response as the first generation shots (thanks to the non-linearity of film's gamma curve), so if you crush the video image down enough to get rid of the mattes you may also be getting rid of far too much visible information in the regular shots. Or it may look fine.

I have calibrated 2.2 gamma and those matte lines are still super obvious. I think my new shitty spare TV has a gamma selector, I could try 2.3 or 2.4 and see if it makes a difference, but wouldn't the rest of the movie then be too dark?

Either way they should be digitally removed. It's the one freaking CGI change I would want and the only one Georgey-poo didn't do.

Removing the garbage mattes probably didn't motivate Lucus that much. He seemed to get a kick of adding elements to the picture.

So what has a better chance of happening, Dicaprio winning an Oscar or Disney releasing the unaltered trilogy?

I see them, especially in the first image. Your monitor may vary.

Contrast exaggerated but what you're looking at is this:

This sort of thing..., I mean I'd rather the films be left untouched, at least as an option.

What source is that? The Special Edition has several space battle shots that were recomposited and therefore no garbage mattes. A lot weren't redone but those shots in particular don't have the mattes anymore.

Hey PeterTHX...

They came from this site:

http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthr...ars-LaserDiscs

The point I was trying to make is that if you see them on your Blu-rays, there is a way to minimize their visibility. They have bugged me since the days of VHS, and I am happy to report that I no longer see them on Blu-ray, and the blacks are not too crushed, which I am greatful for. I use one Picture Mode on our TV for the original Star Wars movies (as well as pretty much any VFX laden movie from before 1999)...and I am happy now.

For those that do not see them in the image I posted, you're prolly using a monitor that is either crushing blacks, or correctly configured.

Wore my THX jacket to work today, so I am feeling like I know something now.
