I think that's a pretty good testament to the disparity between today's mentality that scrutinizes every detail far beyond what the filmmakers intended and what the older filmmakers were satisfied with- that's not to exonerate Lucas on this decision because I think, like 90% percent of the free world, that it was the wrong one, but I also think it's why we hear stories about him telling Kershner not to drill the actors too much because it 'doesn't have to be that good.'

In other words- with the t-shirt and the Empire interview, it's pretty clear he didn't consider it that big a deal.

That would be ideal, the best possible way to go about it. I'd buy the shit out of that.

Indeed, much of the drama surrounding Star Wars in the last 18 years could have easily been avoided if the theatrical cuts had always been available alongside the SEs on every format.

It'd be interesting to see those scenes reinstated. If the OT was to get this "final cut" treatment, why not the PT as well?

Because even the craziest crazyhead in Bat Shit Crazy Town wouldn't try to fix AOTC by adding more Anakin and Padme?

I grew up on the OT and frankly the changes don't really bother me the only change I really cringe at is the Hayden insert at Jedi

I'd settle for just the OT original cuts, since I could just keep the set I have for everything else. Ideally getting all cuts looking much better would be great, but I would totally be fine with the OT in a simple original cuts 3-disc package as a supplement to the other box set.

My serious response to that would be 'but who would do it'.

For all my many issues with Lucas' tinkering, the fact is they were his movies both legally and creatively. I didn't like colorization at least in part because I didn't like the idea of some third party tinkering with a piece of art. Same goes for tinkering with aspect ratios. Sometimes third-party changes can be necessary evils (editing language or graphic material for broadcast purposes, for instance) and sometimes the third parties can be very respectful of the original work (recreating Welles original vision for Touch of Evil by following his famous memo) but for the most part playing around with somebody else's film is an iffy proposition at best.

That's why I'm always a little leery when a home video release touts an 'extended cut'. Sometimes those are cool but more often than not the stuff that got cut wound up on the floor for a reason.

Absolutely, I understand where you're coming from and I also feel slightly uncomfortable with the idea. There is some deleted material from the prequels where I think "it'd be interesting to see that reinserted into the movies", you know, just as an alternate "what if this had been kept in" kind of thing, but if these versions happened (which is probably very unlikely) they should definitely not supplant Lucas' preferred cuts (which I'm guessing is the last-tinkered-with Blu-ray versions) of Episodes I-III. That's very important.

The hypothetical "Super Special Edition" of the OT we've discussed I think would be easier to get away with since it'd be building off the changes Lucas already made and basically just polishing them further instead of inserting completely new scenes, something I feel like Lucas himself probably would have been happy to do and maybe even already done in '97/'04/'11 if he didn't have to pay for them himself.

This made no sense to me at all. In fact it looks stupid because Anakin is a young Force Ghost, but Yoda and Obi-Wan are not. Fail.

The two scenes that also bug the hell out of me are Han in the bar and then Han stepping on Jaba. That's so damn fake it's not even funny.

I'm surprised that is it...

1. Jedi Rocks?
2. NOOOOOO!
3. Force Hayden at the end of Jedi
4. Greedo shooting first
5. Tremors snake things trying to eat Lando
6. R2 not being tasty on Dagobah
7. Jabba in ANH...you don't know what kind of horrible scary creature Jabba is in ANH and in Empire. Introducing him in Jedi is satisfying to finally see what he is....a giant pervy slug thing.
8. No yub nub on endor (I am sort of eh on this one though)
9. and all other terrible changes are still < JEDI ROCKS.

While the changes don't bug me doesn't mean I'm a fan of the changes or most of the changes just that I don't really care most of the changes don't take me out of the movie

Actually if you've ever watched "Attack of the Phantom" he re-instated those deleted scenes with Padme's family but then removed other cringier scenes, either entirely or made them better with some creative editing.

It might be worth checking out as a curiosity if it's still easy to get. I have some issues with his edit, as I thought he cut out some actual good parts and mysteriously left in a few horrid bits that could easily have been chopped ("I've been dying a little each day since you came back into my life") but it does improve things in the movie and is an interesting lesson in editing if nothing else.

Obi-Wan & Yoda died old. Anakin was 45-ish when he died. Sebastian Shaw was 77 years old when he shot Jedi.

My wife watched Empire Strikes Back for the first time tonight. She watched Star Wars for the first time last week and didn't like it at all, fell asleep during it, I posted about it. Well Empire was no better. She didn't fall asleep, but around where the cloud city stuff starts she turned to me and said "I am so bored can we turn it off?" I made her finish it but she wasn't happy. I asked her for a 1-10 rating at the end and she said "3." She couldn't really list reasons, just found it "boring."

Oh well, no movie is for everyone. She's still going to see Force Awakens with me since I lost most of my friends moving across country and going to the movies alone is lame. More importantly she likes the Star Trek movies, and since I am mostly a Trek fan I can't be too upset about her tastes in sci-fi!

Now I have to watch Jedi myself to prepare for TFA!

Uh oh. I guess they better go back and digitally superimpose Hayden's head onto Vader's body after Luke removes his mask.

Don't forget changing his voice as well! I'm sure that they could just re-use the same audio filter that was used so successfully with General Grievous in RotS (an appropriate acronym if there ever was one!) for the sake of cost savings...
