Does it really make a difference if it's Jar Jar or any other Gungan? Still just as annoying.

Having just watched Jedi a few days ago, I can say that I actually don't mind Vader saying no before killing Palpatine. It kinda works for me.

Wouldn't be surprised if that were true. I can't watch the ending of ROTJ because of that *******. Didn't get the blu ray set either, as much as I wanted to.

To the people here who like the prequels, would you like them as much if the OT didn't exist? I used to think the prequels were crap because I liked the originals so much better, but now I kinda like the prequels but I think part of the reason is because they're Star Wars movies. I bet if the OT didn't exist, the prequels wouldn't have as many haters or lovers.

I sort of like them, but as you said it's because I am such a big Star Wars fan due to the original three. I feel that if the original three did not exist that there would actually be more hate for I-III, especially the first two as they are poor films to begin with. What makes them tolerable is Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor.

I picked up the ESB steelbook from Best Buy but I'm so on the fence about the others. I would love to own Star Wars and ROTJ but the son-of-a-*****ing special editions just piss me off. Thinking I might be able to stomach Star Wars though.. from what I recall the changes are nowhere near as bad as in ROTJ.. also thinking I'll pick up the PT steels. but then I feel aggravated I'd have them all but ROTJ. grrrrrrrrrr....

I couldn't decide so I bought them all several months ago. I might sell them off, but it depends what the steelbooks are like for Rogue One, 8, 9, etc.

I have three versions of the original three films. The 2004 DVD box set, the theatrical LD cuts, and the BDs.

For ROTJ I usually just go with the BD. The only alteration I loathe is Vader's "No. No!!!" at the end.

The prequels are a victim of the fact they're Star Wars movies.

If they were some other sci-fi/space fantasy movie people would have loved them more. But since the bar was already set so ridiculously high it failed to meet a lot of people's standards for a Star Wars movie.

I think in the Hobbit triliogy thread there are people like me who say they can enjoy the movies once they stopped comparing them to LOTR. For me I have a completist mindset of both. It may be a flawed mindset, but basically I love the universes and such for both Star Wars and Middle Earth that I just want to see as much as possible. The Hobbit movies are entertaining and fun. They aren't the best like LOTR but on their own I have no problem watching them or catching it on TV. Since I love Star Wars more, I love all 7 movies plus TFA equally. They could come on TV and I'd probably put it on and forget what I was doing.

If the Prequels were some other other sci-fantasy movies and the OT never existed, you never would have seen Episode II. Having said that, the Prequels never would have been created in the form they were, because they assume you already know certain things from the OT (The Force, the Jedi, the Dark Side, pew-pew lasers, etc...). The entire thing would have to be a top-to-bottom rewrite/re-imagining. It's just how things worked out.

Generally, I don't. Not only did I play it to utter annihilation as a child (watching a VHS copy that somehow turned up at our house) it's also one of the best examples of "films from childhood that can't cut the mustard now that I'm grown".

Having said that, when watching the blu-ray, I switch over to the 4:3 DVD for Vader's big (silent) moment -- and then back again for the celebration scene, because screw Yub Nub.

But thinking about how my feelings concerning the whole "SE experiment" have evolved, it's pretty remarkable.

In 1997, I was all for it. I was in line for the first showing of each SE. I read about the changes extensively online, and was genuinely excited to see them. Apart from the Greedo bullshit, I was pretty much on board, full stop.

Then I saved up enough to buy a used laser disc player. Although my total collection never passed thirty titles, six of them were Star Wars films, because I wanted to own both versions. As I recall, both versions got about equal play in my house, with maybe a slight edge to the SEs.

Yes, for a time there, the Special Editions actually felt...special.

I like to remind myself of this, because very often we fans who clamour for an official, quality release of the original films, are dismissed as cranks or losers who can't just move on, and that's not true. But it also makes me think, just how hard was it for Lucas to squander all that goodwill? I mean, amid the further destructive tinkering and continuing refusal to treat the original films with respect, twenty frigging years have gone by.

It just seems crazy to me, when I remember how excited I was to see A New Hope: SE on January 31st, 1997.

I think it works both to their advantage and disadvantage. The OT being as revered as it is did make people hold the PT to a very high (perhaps impossible) standard, no doubt, and Lucas couldn't have pleased everyone no matter what he did.

But, at the same time, I think they benefit from it more. If not for the Star Wars title and connection to the original films, they would probably have been received as pretty good/okay sci-fi/fantasy movies that were forgotten a few decades later. But, thanks to the classic status of the OT and the lasting popularity of the Star Wars brand, they'll always be remembered just by association.

So basically, watching Luke dying reminds him of Padme's death, and he just snaps and says, "no you don't Emperor Palpy, not this time!! This time I can save him!"

Now with that said, I think all that would have come across just fine without the NOOOOO's. But that's George for ya.
I always took it that way as well. People change their minds and we all know this can be true with artists. Can you imagine a world where you only judge someone for what they did in the past (justified or not)?

However, until we open up George's head and have the tech to know exactly what he thought all those years ago than anything surmised is guess work.

Pretending one knows for a fact what is true or not is assinine.

I try to follow what the artist wants even if I don't agree with it. It is his creation initially even if from a business standpoint he sold the rights.

Go on youtube type "cinemassins" followed by the title of each star wars prequel. It really highlights why people hate the prequals.

Heh. How's that old quote go? "The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about"
