Francis Ford Coppola: "Hey George, I am releasing both versions of Apocalypse Now on BD/DVD, why don't you release all of the versions of the Star Wars Trilogy?"

Steven Spielberg: "Yeah, I saw the error of my ways and released the theatrical cut of E.T. after an outcry from the fans, why don't you release the UOT?"

George Lucas: "Did you guys say something? Hey, what if the Ewok blinked?"

I liked that a lot, but for me, the glimpses we saw weren’t enough to call the visual style of this film a wrecked universe. Now, I think that’s a great idea though, and I would have loved it if they’d gone to town with that concept, with lots of things in disrepair and we also could have seem things like that on Takodana as well, not just Jakku.

For me, the environments in Rogue One seemed much more evocative and interesting and original, compared to TFA, and that was set directly before the OT, not 30 years after.

Not everyone has a BD burner in their computer, the appropriate software, or a speedy internet connection. I remember it taking me several days with my old internet service provider to download the original Star Wars Despecalized (current ISP is faster), then I realized I had no means to put it on a disc. Watched it on my computer, but it’s not the same thing...

There are also those of us who don't do non-official downloads. I got smacked by my ISP for a worthless Olympic soccer match of all things years ago and have been careful ever since.

I was lucky enough to swoop when the Despecialized Editions were briefly available on Ebay however.

Rey lives in shambles, Luke is in exile, Han and Leia's marriage was wrecked...the First Order has the new stuff, the New Republic doesn't want to learn from the past, the Resistance is a shell of the Rebellion. I get what you're saying, I just take Jakku as a visual metaphor for what's happened since Jedi, both with the galaxy and the characters.

The Force Awakens and Rogue One were (bad) fan films. Utterly pointless. Like recording a Beatles album without Paul, John, Ringo and George involved and trying to pass it off as The Beatles.

I don't agree Rogue is slow at all, that's an odd comment for moi. I really like the movie's look and groove, but it definitely feels slapped together by committee. Calling it (or Force Awakens) outright bad and pointless tells me you don't watch enough movies though. Hell, Phantom Menace is at least an okay movie in a world where shit like Roger Corman's Battle Beyond the Stars exist.

The fact that fans have to go so ridiculously out of their way to watch one of the most influential films of all time in the form it was released in is, in my humble opinion, absolutely silly. If any film should be available in all of its forms to the general public, it would be Star Wars.

Whether you like them or not, The Force Awakens and Rogue One are official Star Wars films made by Lucasfilm. So no, they are not "fan films." Star Wars: Revelations is a fan film.

Yep, and so is the Holiday Special. Well, I guess technically it isn't, but there are so many disturbing things in that production.

What’s so bad about someone calling Rogue One terrible and pointless? It’s just a matter of taste and doesn’t necessarily having anything to do with being a Lucas loyalist or not. I love Star Wars, Empire, Jedi, Force Awakens, and somewhat like Phantom, Clones, and Sith, but I think Rogue One was a completely boring movie with no likable characters and an uninteresting story.

Just to keep things positive I like all eight of the main Star Wars films, some a lot more than others, but I still enjoy them all.

I think I’d like the prequels more if the original versions of the OT were released. I kind of blame the prequels for the special editions.

But yeah, Rogue One is objectively not a terrible film: terrible films don't have good acting, well done SFX and an engaging plot. You want a film lacking in any of those qualities, go watch one of the prequels.

The more hate I read from people about the PT, the more I question whether all of it is really necessary? Remember, hate leads to the dark side.

Since others have listed their favourites in order of preference, here are mine:

1) THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK/STAR WARS - (original versions).

2) RETURN OF THE JEDI - (original version).

3) ROGUE ONE/THE FORCE AWAKENS.
