There was a website years ago where extended versions of The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were created and posted by the user ADigitalMan

I love the prequels. The only SW film I rate higher then any of the prequels is Empire Strikes Back. Every other SW film is below the prequels for me. The SE's of the OT is also all I can ever remember seeing. I might've seen the TC's as a very young kid on VHS but if I did I remember nothing of them.

Nah, I think most people don't exactly like them - but it's definitely an exaggeration. They definitely have their detractors among the fans, most of whom probably have perfectly valid reasons for why they think that way, but I also think people like them at least ironically, like somebody who posts prequel memes. They also introduced new characters and auxiliary material like the Clone Wars cartoon that was legitimately well received by fans and critics alike.

The problem with media - especially pop culture media that would cover this sort of thing - is the push for specific narratives. While I'm inclined to understand that in the case of individuals posting on twitter - not doing their research so they don't even know if what they're saying has any basis in fact or not, nor do they really have any obligation to remain unbiased - but professional journalists should be held to a higher standard than this.

For example, in their attempt to paint the SW fandom as this hateful entity, they dug Jake Lloyd and Ahmed Best out of the woodworks to support their narrative, using them as examples of people whose lives had been ruined by the "toxic fandom", when in reality TPM came out before social media was even a thing. Jake was bullied by his own classmates, and Ahmed was attacked primarily by the same media that now rallies to his defense. And it's these minor details that get left out on retweets, when they're not being supplanted by flat-out lies. And that is what makes them fake news!

For the record, I only own the original trilogy on Dvds with the original cuts, the SEs are an afront to the force but I would own the set of bonus feature discs if I could. TPM was pretty well recieved on release, but it took a week for the hype to die and then there was a huge roll back of sentiment. I know, I was there. And it wasnt against Lucas per say, just that the movie didnt live up to the expectations and then word of mouth went sour, and then Clones sealed that Trilogys fate. Calling it the media's fault is ludicrous, every piece of internet and print media was slavering for TPM, but it wasnt good enough for the hysterical SW mobs to revel in. Jake Lloyd sucks, JarJar sucks, theres no 2 ways around it.

But, I work with a lot of college aged students, and if they know star wars at all then they are most likely prequel trilogy fans, I try to live and let live. I prefer those 6 to everything Dizney has put out, but Ive been in the minority opinion there. My point is calling something FakeNews just because it goes against your opinions is foolish. You like 1-3, great, but people arent saying they didnt like it just to troll you, I for one on opening day found it a tedious, badly acted, cringey cgifest like a lot of the movies of the time. All the retconning turned off most, not all, of the die hards I knew including myself.

But, I do kind of get what you mean. I remember in the mid 90s there was a reevaluation of Return of the Jedi where people who hated the ewoks or the Tarzan yell started to get vocal, but when it came out most kids thought it was the bee knees so to hear people say that ROTJ sucked was kind of surprising, and as times gone on that sentiment has kind of cemented itself in the conversation, especially with the SEs. Sigh, the SE of Return is just as bad as TPM imo.

Stuffing your fingers in your ears and shouting FakeNews! only works at the presidential level I guess

I think my opinion of the ewoks is severely coloured by the fact that I saw both the Ewok movies and the cartoon before I saw a single Star Wars movie. Hell, I didn't even realize there was a connection until I saw Return of the Jedi! Or so I think. Honestly my memory of that time period is a little fuzzy, but I wouldn't be surprised that seeing the rebel transport in Empire Strikes Back after seeing it in Battle for Endor would've made something click.

And while I think Jake Lloyd wasn't much of an actor, it's also hard to fault him when you consider what kind of dialogue the prequels were peppered with and how tough it is for child actors to deliver believable performances even in a good movie. Obviously what happened to him was terrible, but at least lay the blame where it's due.

The prequels are heavily flawed but have become entertaining after I've tried to see them more as their own thing.

I really do hate the special editions of the OT, though. Mostly because they're the only HD versions that we can get without pirating. If they had been left in the 90s then I probably wouldn't have much of an opinion.

I'm in my mid-20s and grew up on the VHS theatrical cuts.

Sith doesn't bother me, I'll take any version. Clones I much prefer the DVD cut (not the outright theatrical as it had a hilariously stilted reaction from Padme when the fella asks her if she's alright after falling from the gunship) over the Blu-ray as the rejigged scenes annoy me, as mentioned above the edits to the music are super jarring. The music was hacked up to shit anyway but what I don't want is it made worse! Phantom Menace I prefer the theatrical, the extended podrace is just too needlessly bloated and the other little extensions elsewhere aren't necessary either (which is Lucas' tinkering in a nutshell, really). I know that people fap fap fap over the new CG Yoda but that's not enough for me to outweigh the annoyance of the rest of the added stuff.

I want more romantic dialogue between Anakin and Padme. I could listen to that stuff all day long.

You're taking the Michael but even so, the deleted scene in Clones with Padme's family where she gazes longingly at Anakin shows more of her feelings towards him than a hundred pages of risible Lucas-penned dialogue.

Agree to disagree. I would for sure say more fans like the prequels than don't. Revenge of the Sith often polls first or second depending on what poll you look at for favorite Star Wars movie. I am almost 40 I love all the Star Wars movies and I have long resented the notion the way to prove your fandom to the the OT is by bashing prequels or sequels if you like anything other than them you can't possibly love the OT....ughhh. I would also like to say hateful fans even with the prequels and now with the sequels is a vocal minority. When the phantom menace came out in 1999 message boards was a new thing and people had a new way to vent their ideas or frustration....now fast forward to 2018 we still have people on social media sites bashing and making sick death threats online. In my experience social media tends to be overall a place for negative individuals. I have no problem with someone sanely expressing disappoint with something they don't like but the internet has provided an outlet for insane individuals to express their opinions in a way that is not fit for human interaction.

I think it's kind of hilarious to imagine that Lucas watched Episode II and was all: "you know, everything's perfect except Padme getting up here is too stilted. Let's do another take."

Phantom Menace, apart from being Phantom Menace, I also agree is slightly better originally. Nothing as drastic as the altered classic films, but between that and the Blu-Ray being DNR processed, I'd take a project 4K99 on that one too

I should pick up the Phantom Menace laserdisc at some point.

If only Disney/Lucasfilm would release the prequels in those big sleeve variants so I could put something between episodes I and IV on my shelf

Maybe in another 20 years we'll get project 4K99 (or 8K99 ) from a theatrical print, I'd be all over that like white on rice.
