Again not every theatre had stereo equipment in the late ‘70s. That was the whole purpose to the 35mm mono mix. Just like how in the early sound years not every theatre had sound equipment and thus some studios had to issue silent versions of their sound pictures. Dracula was one of them.

I see. Does that mean theaters only had one speaker per screen? Or was it more of a duel mono system?

Tommy in 75 did the quintaphonic thing (5 channel surround), which was like a revision of Fantasound from 1940. Don't know if that helps your conversation.

Probably depended on the theatre.

Why are some mono mixes on home video releases 1.0 and some are dual-channel? I’ve always wondered.

I don’t know. Is there a difference? If a disc was encoded with one channel wouldn’t a TV duplicate it so that the channel comes out of both speakers? It would be pretty dumb if it only came out of the left or right. Maybe there are some die-hard mono purists that like to use one speaker only. But in that case I would think a disc that had dual mono tracks would just be condensed into one channel for the mono speaker...?

You know, that makes me wonder; are dual mono tracks actually just stereo tracks with identical left and right channels, or is there some sort of encoding trickery going on that splits an actual mono channel into two during playback?

It's the same audio in both channels.

If you're running it through a surround system, a 1.0 mono track will output sound from the centre speaker, while 2.0 mono will output from the left/right front speakers. That will give you a more immersive mono sound, while 1.0 is more centralized. If it's being run through a 2-speaker system like a TV, 1.0 will basically be spread across the two channels so it ends up being 2.0 mono.

I watched Solo for the first time the other day and I must say I found it to be incredibly boring and pointless. I’d rank it at the bottom of the list.

I’ve seen much worse films; it’s not bad per se, just so generic and forgettable.

I thought Solo was just a fun romp, considering you knew certain characters weren't going to die, but I found it refreshingly fun because of it's almost inconsequential nature.

I was the opposite, I thought it was the best of the four Disney movies. Which isn't saying much, I guess, as I don't think the other three are any good, but Solo was a fun time at the theatre.

I wouldn't say that's the opposite, although I did really enjoy Rogue One, and found TFA tolerable.

I love TFA and Rogue One. I was afraid that the character of Han Solo might be ruined by a prequel film but I enjoyed it just as much as the other two. Who knew that instead of Han being ruined by a prequel we would get Luke ruined with a sequel?

Sorry, I should have been clearer - I meant the opposite of that above poster who hated Solo.

1. TFA
2. TLJ

3. R1
4. Solo

I find these last two incredibly boring with no likable characters. I give R1 the edge since the story is somewhat interesting. I’m not really on board with Luke’s character in TLJ but I find that movie pretty entertaining in a lot of places.

I’m starting to think, at least for me, the ST is for a new generation of fans. I’m grateful I was the right age to see the OT in theaters. Empire will always be the best in my book. I’m tired of people saying TLJ is going to be remembered like Empire. I’ll eat my hat in 20 years if it does reach that status.
