Really? As long as I send my movies on a Monday, I usually will get any new releases on Wednesday. I think there was only one instance where it said long wait.

But for me, the transfer comes first and foremost. If they give me an awesome transfer, I'll be ecstatic. I don't think any other live action movie, before or after, has the potential to look as spectacular as LOTR on Blu-ray. Certainly movies like Braveheart, Blade Runner and Star Trek(2009) have stunning transfers and those movies lend themselves to the HD wide screen format. Certainly future releases like Ben Hur, Indiana Jones, Titanic, Star Wars, Dances With Wolves, etc.......will look spectacular as well, but I'm not sure any of those will be able to beat the absolute fantasy feast imagery that the LOTR trilogy brings.
+1 for me too! But I am looking forward to the DolbyTrueHD track as much as I am looking forward to the transfer.......

I have the TE on DVDs and they still stand up by themselves pretty well. Not to mention I paid $60+ for them. No thanks on the TE BDs (unless they have several exclusive special features that the EEs won't have). I'm only getting the EEs (it'll be my first time watching the extended scenes).

Notice I said "many", not all Also I'm of the opinion that the EEs won't be out for years so it will be a long wait for the LOTR fans that are also bluray fans.

Not to mention, I don't think the cost of admission is so great it would prevent people. The TEs will most likely be around 60 bucks upon release and even drop much cheaper throughout the year. When the EEs release you can simply offload the TEs (plus the EE DVDs if you still have them) to put towards "upgrading". So it wouldn't be a complete loss. That's just one thought.

To be fair, Peter Jackson did make it quite known the EEs were going to be released after the theatrical DVDs.

Hell, yes, blind buy!

Despite what some people say I swear by both versions. I also like both versions for different reasons. Fellowship of the Ring's extended edition is hands down better than the theatrical. But that is not to say the Theatrical isn't good, because it is fantastic as well. Peter Jackson wouldn't have approved them if he thought otehrwise. And Peter has said it himself that the theatrical versions are the director's cuts. He considers the Extended Editions to be something special and extra for fans of both the books and movies. Really both versions of all the films are phenominal, but I would at least rent the theatrical versions on Blu-ray if you want to wait on the extended editions. However, the extended editions won't be out on Blu-ray til 2012 at the earliest, and it would be a crime for you to wait that long to see these films. Rent the Theatrical versions on blu-ray and experience this masterpiece!

If you've never seen any of the LOTR movies, there's really little reason to wait on the extended editions. I'm sure the theatrical editions will suffice for first time viewers. I've only ever seen the first one so far, but I think it would be worth a blind buy if you are into these kind of movies.

First question is...have you read the books?

If you have and love them, then you'd probaby want to see the Extended editions on DVD. Because to truly film the book, they would have to create 50+ hours of film to include every scene and character. So even the Extended versions of the film omit whole sections and characters to fit it into 11 hours.

But if you haven't read the books but like heroic adventure with epic battles and brilliant characters in a fully-formed world, you will absolutely love the Lord of the Rings. It's one of the finest adventure stories ever written.

Filmwise...Theatrical version or Extended version...both are great. The Extended versions breathe a little bit more, and give you more background and more world-building. And more detail, especially about the secondary characters. It's great stuff, but not "required" for the main story.

If you're not averse to watching DVDs, I recommend the Extended cut of the Fellowship of the Ring, and the Theatrical cuts of the remaining films.

Ya, because 9 1/2 hour run-time of the theatrical edition is for wussies. Real men demand 11 hours plus of watching hobbits walk and talk!

Ya ya.. I was joking of course.

I might be tempted to buy the theatrical cut if the price is right. I already have the extended editions on DVD.

I just eBayed my extended editions and I'll be buying the theatrical releases on BD in April.

Just don't have the time anymore for extended versions of already long movies.

Yeah I am new here, btw this site is awesome!!!

So I have one question. I have heard alot about the LOTR trilogy only being the theatrical verions, and not the extended. I was at amazon looking at the reviews for this box set and everyone is giving it one star reviews and saying that they are not buying it, because the extended versions are alot better.

Now me being someone who has never seen these films and want too, (especially now they are on bluray) will it be worth it for me to preorder the trilogy now, or just wait for the extended versions? Even when the extended versions coming out next year.

So do you guys think it would be worth it for me?
