Good to know, but quite a few people will be happy to pay $22 per movie for the theatrical versions.

HD cameras existed well before Blu-ray. When the LOTR movies were released on DVD, the concept of Blu-ray was already being worked out.

I would. In fact, I'd pay as high as 50 cents for the theatrical versions.

HD cameras and HD video existed long before HD DVD/BD.

I thought I remember reading when the DVD editions came out that the bonus material had been shot on HD so a future HD release could show the benefit. I think that they were planning ahead. It would certainly make those bonus materials really worth watching over again to see them in hi-def!

I'm with you on this. I've watched the theatrical versions twice, then i bought the E.E gift set and have watched them at least 5 times since. I will never watch the theatricals again. It's a damn shame we'll have to wait, but so be it.

You silly Americans.

More is NOT better, the TE's are by far the better films.

And yours got you banned!!!

My max buy price is no where in sight . If the trilogy is below $60 on release day, I'd be surprised

I think once reviews start hitting and the sales start happening, many of the naysayers claiming they can hold out for as long as it takes for the EEs will end up buying the TEs (even if secretly).

I'm there day 1 for the TEs and will also buy the EEs whenever they are released. There's nothing wrong with owning both. I did the same for Watchmen

Except that most people don't have enough money to just rebuy things over and over again. I don't buy movies often, anyway. I'll probably rent the theatrical editions, since I haven't seen any of the three movies since they came out, but then I'll wait for the extended editions.

I dont think so. I dont buy that many movies anyway, and this year money is more tight than usual for me. Considering I STRONGLY prefer the EEs, I see a rental at best as far as the TEs go. I watch these films once a year at most anyway so I just dont see the point in owning the inferior versions in light of all this.

I'm going leave my thoughts on this issue as I did with the Tombstone thread. I do very much love the extended versions, but at this point, I'm just happy they are coming out. For me, it's all about the transfer. If the transfer looks great, I'm a happy camper. If the studios come out with the extended versions later, I'll buy them. But for me, the transfer comes first and foremost. If they give me an awesome transfer, I'll be ecstatic. I don't think any other live action movie, before or after, has the potential to look as spectacular as LOTR on Blu-ray. Certainly movies like Braveheart, Blade Runner and Star Trek(2009) have stunning transfers and those movies lend themselves to the HD wide screen format. Certainly future releases like Ben Hur, Indiana Jones, Titanic, Star Wars, Dances With Wolves, etc.......will look spectacular as well, but I'm not sure any of those will be able to beat the absolute fantasy feast imagery that the LOTR trilogy brings.

Especially when they are good movies and you don't have to wait a few more years to see the EE on blu.

There is no way that I'm going to quadruple dip for these films. I've already purchased them twice on DVD. The studios have received $200+ from me towards the LOTR franchise. At least with the forewarning of the extended cuts this time around, I can avoid the flawed Theatrical Cuts.

I waited for the EE's on DVD, and I'll do so again with Blu-ray. I'll maybe rent them if the mood strikes me but I won't be picking up the theatrical release, no matter how good it is. It isn't a "more is better" attitude, it's the simple fact that many of us grew up reading these stories and the EE's are closer to the books than the theatricals. This of course also makes them longer, which in the case of the quality we get, is an added bonus.

A major point! I can sympathize with those who are holding out for the EE's but let's say that the EE's will be released in two years. If you watch the TE's only once a year, that would be (3 movies x 2) = 6 viewings. If the going price stays at $60, that would be $10 per viewing of a Blu-ray version (!) of LOTR, which at least one critic has described as "the most 'cinematic' movies ever made. Even if you never watch the TE's again (or their unique special features), wouldn't that be worth it until the EE's are available? Obviously, WB is delaying the EE release to capitalize on their product (and profit), which although frustrating to us, makes complete business sense. Still, it seems like an incredible bargain to me.

It's called Netflix...which would be a lot cheaper.
