Dose anyone know if the UK release of Martyrs will play on my PS3 here in the states? I have read a lot about the fact that Blu Ray is generally region free, but I would hate to put in the order with amazon and find out it won't play.

I am crushed that they pulled the US Blu Ray release last minute, and I can not bring myself to buy anything on DVD anymore. Really loved this movie, can't wait to see and hear it on Blu Ray.
Some cautiously good news for U.S. residents without a Region B player. The French release of Martyrs on Blu-ray has just been confirmed region-free! I will look forward to more information about this particular version.

The French dvd does not have English subtitles. I would not be surprised if the blu-ray was the same.

Totally agree. It's not that I was shocked by the second half...it's just somewhat of a massive anti-climax.

Edit: And if I had to go further, that second half is nothing more than a
[Show spoiler]rather pretentious Saw/Hostel clone with ideas borrowed from Hellraiser & Rosemary's Baby
.

I too agree that the first half is the best, but to compare the last half with those movies hidden under your spoiler is way out there. While the violence in your "spoiler movies" are fun and over the top, what happenes in Martyrs is far from funny.

I have no problems with you not liking the last half (each to his own taste), but I can't really see the similarities to the movies you mention.

Perhaps that is why I find it pretentious.
[Show spoiler]And torture in a room sequences, a skinless body and the elderly matriarchal head of an evil sect all appear in this film. Hence borrowing ideas from those pre-mentioned films.

Edit: I might go easier on the film but I feel that it's greatness has been greatly exaggerated, and would like to present another point of view. Personally, I find that the second half comes across as a rather po-faced collection of ideas that I have already seen before. But like you said, each to their own.

Once again I see your point(s), and I'm not gonna start a discussion about taste in movies.

But what makes this film so good to me is that it breaks away from the dreary and stupid horror/re-make/sequel/prequel garbage that Hollywood has been dumping out for the last 5 years now. Horror was (for me) almost dead.

And then suddenly some moviemakers from France comes along and blows new life to the genre that I love more than any other genre. Both Martyrs and Inside have it's shortcomings and flaws, but for me they both gave me back the joy of watching (new) horror movies.

Best recent ones for me would probably be The Orphanage, The Mist & [Rec]. I didn't hate Martyrs, I was just disappointed by it. A victim of high expectations perhaps...

the scene that got me the most was when she was bathing the victim with the bolted in helmet thing.in a lot of other films it may have been lit in a dark shadowy way.but here it was so starkly shot it just seemed real.one of the best blus i have film wise.apparently the director is making hellraiser next.im disturbed already

Ha ha... I wouldn't throw rocks to someone who doesn't like this movie, cause it's one of those movies that divides audiencies radically.

I "enjoyed" the movie (don't know if it's the right word) but at the same time understood perfectly that many people will be repeled by it. On the other hand, as much as I "enjoyed" it, for me it doesn't have great replay value. I'll watch it maybe once a decade.

I *personally* wasn't repelled by it, just hugely disappointed since it didn't live up to it's (very unfortunate) hype and ravings. I've kept it and will view again.
