For me I want my horror bleak and disturbing. As noted in my post in this thread just prior, I cannot stand super exaggerated death scenes. The old classics such as A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, and TCCM certainly have some of that, but it is within reason to me. Pro-B hit it on the head with Jacob's Ladder, if you want something disturbing that is a must own.

To be honest I do prefer horrors that are full of suspense and prey on the unknown with a clever use of sound... gore is fine but if that’s all the film is relying on then it might not be quite what i looking for... the old classic you mention certainly fill that criteria but I’ve seen all those and I’m trying to find NEW horrors that aren’t just a saw/hostel rehash which is all i seem to be able to come across.. if that makes sense

I love Martyrs, it's one horror film you won't forget after watching. It makes Hostel look like The Care Bears Movie.

WOW. That is quite a statement!!! I don't mind the gore and torture horror as long as there is more to it than that. I find the Saw movies to be all flash and no substance.

I love the Saw movies too, but Martyrs is a completely different kettle of fish to either the Saw or Hostel movies. There is gore but that's mainly towards the end of the film (last 20 minutes or so), but there's also a point to it. The prolonged torture scene is actually quite necessary to how the ending is played out.

If you can stomach it, I recommend everyone watches it at least once.

Does this film 'benefit' greatly from Blu-ray? At the moment the only option available to me is the Region A Blu-ray which has no features whatsoever, or the US DVD which has an hour long documentary and an intro from the director.

I like Blu-ray, but I'm admittedly not a hardcore videophile and I don't have a top of the line home theater system. So subtle or cumulative differences probably wouldn't make a huge difference.

didn't see any extras listed on the UK or Canadian blurays. does anyone know if there's a difference?
I'm in Canada so i can just pick up the Canadian disc cheaply (about $15) at a brick & mortar shop, but would import the UK edition if there's a ton of extras.

Could anyone who owns the Canadian Entertainment One blu-ray confirm that it's the uncut version? I really want to get it if it's uncut, but neither the review on this site nor this forum thread has mentioned it so far.

I have to say, I'm kinda kicking myself for buying the Canadian release since I have a region-free Blu-ray player.
When comparing running times, it appeared as if the UK release was the slightly cut version and the Canadian one was uncut, but I believe both are uncut.

Also, the Canadian release has zero extras (which I should have researched more before I bought it). It does look and sound great.

Just wondering, can anyone confirm if the behind the scenes feature on this UK release is the same one that was included on the US DVD release?

Nope, the US version of the making-of is 30 minutes shorter than the UK version
