I knocked off another unwatched TT Blu-ray. Today it was Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. I was left in an unusual state of liking and disliking the film. I absolutely love The Wild Bunch; of course, I was excited to see my second Peckinpah film, but I just don't know how I feel about it. Perhaps a rewatch later on will clear things up.

It took me a few viewings to "get" it. It's quite a quirky movie. You should definitely check out a few more Peckinpah films though.

I felt the exact same way when I watched it a year ago. Still haven't rewatched it. Kind of afraid I won't come to like it more.

In the future, I'll be buying WA's Ride the High Country and The Ballad of Cable Hogue. I want to watch more of his westerns. I own Major Dundee but unsure on which cut to watch. When I'm in situations like that, I tend to watch the longer/extended cut; I'll probably watch it soon.

I usually wait a year or more to rewatch a movie.

"Cable Hogue" changed how I look at Peckinpah, it's got all the usual themes but it's in a completely different key. Seeing that he can do that makes "Alfredo Garcia" all the more interesting for the choices he made there.

"Ride The High Country" is a solid old-school western.

Ride the High Country is a spectacular film, definitely among my Top 100 Films of all-time. I've heard it described as "elegiac" and "monumental", but I think the adjective that best describes it is "poetic" ... and it is, for me, sheer cinematic poetry. Lucien Ballard's cinematography is breathtaking (no, really, I kind of gasp at some of the gorgeous panoramas, even after having seen the film over two dozen times); George Bassman's soaring score gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes; Mariette Hartley is radiant in her film debut; and Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea both give career-best performances that prove once and for all that they were both highly skilled actors whose talents were often under-utilized and under-appreciated.

Happily, the Warner Archive blu-ray transfer is nigh perfect; certainly it exceeded my fondest hopes and dreams. It absolutely dazzled me. This is a film that I urged The Great Owl to see many, many months ago, but in truth, I think everyone should see it. This is one of those films that I've forced my friends and family to watch under duress, and no one has ever expressed disappointment or accused me of over-selling it.

In the history of the American Western, Ride the High Country marked the end of the Classic Golden Age, and ushered in the Modern era all at the same time. See it and be amazed.

Lol, I'll just send you another copy of Leave Her to Heaven. I think it cost me $80 since I really wanted it but it was obviously long sold out, so that can cover your fake hospital bills.

Even though they haven't removed it from the website, I'm assuming Cat Ballou is sold out on Twilight Time's website? You can't add it to your cart, but they usually remove sold out titles from the website.

I agree about both Scott and McCrea. Both were very versatile actors, especially in the '30-'40s when they did everything from comedy to horror (Scott was even in an Astair/Rogers musical). Both actors at one point decided that they were most comfortable in the saddle and did westerns exclusively. I'd love to see more of both men's films on BD. Sticking with Scott-I wish someone would upgrade his Budd Boetticher westerns.

So, after all those times that a purchase from the TT site resulted in my getting my BDs, the very next day, because the distributor was 25 miles away, is all over now.
They screwed up, lost TT's business, and the new distributor is 700 miles away in Texas ?!?!?

Oh well. Posting for all those that hated me every time I posted the " next day " thing.

But I wonder ... I've read so much lately about 3D becoming passe; in fact, I think IMAX announced within the last two weeks that it was scaling back on the number of new 3D releases. So why did these two 3D Twilight Time titles sell out so comparatively quickly? Are TT connoisseurs more likely to purchase 3D films? Or is 3D still a viable format? I would suspect the former is the case, but I'd be interested in what readers of this forum have to say.
Man in the Dark took years to sell out, right?

I am a little surprised Mad Magician sold out so quickly, but it serves a few collectors that tend to spend money. Vincent Price has a solid follwing, it is 1950s 3D, etc.

TT connoisseurs are more likely to have more disposable income for films as they are priced top of the market already. 3D also commands a premium in the general market, so even non-TT collectors look at $20 and say that is reasonable for a 3D release.

My fear at this point is my TV (which is truly fantastic) will eventually die, someday. I just hope the estimates LG made on the TV are accurate in how long OLED should last.

I ordered media mail shipping from TT (in the south east) and got my order two days later.

Now the $7.50 shipping for media mail for basically 3 films is truly absurd, but at least the shipping was lightning fast.

My SAE order I placed well before that one is now 8 days in transit.

When I sell something too heavy for First Class I gotta send it Media Mail though, otherwise you're looking at like $15 shipping instead of $3.

Actually Scott was in two Astaire/Rogers musicals: Roberta in 1935 and Follow the Fleet which came out the following year. And in 1937, he appeared as Irene Dunne's non-singing leading man in another musical, High, Wide and Handsome, which was written, in part, by Oscar Hammerstein II. I remember reading a very persuasive essay some years ago by film historian Gene Ringgold, who argued that Randolph Scott was born to play the role of Ashley Wilkes in Gone With the Wind, based on Scott's work in the 1935 Civil War epic So Red the Rose, and truth to tell, I think Ringgold may have been on to something. Leslie Howard gave a fantastic performance in the role of Ashley, but I think Scott's physical stature and easy charm might have made him a more believable object of Scarlett's affection.

I, too, would like to see more of both actors on blu-ray, and agree that the Brown-Scott westerns directed by Budd Boetticher would all be worth owning. To my regret, I missed out on the five-disc DVD set that included The Tall T, Decision at Sundown, Buchanan Rides Alone, Ride Lonesome and Comanche Station. Hopefully, Twilight Time or another label may consider releasing them in the future.

And if it's a rare, OOP album, or OOP BD, I'll pay extra for Priority. Gets here in 2 days, and greatly lessens the chance of damage, the longer it's out there.
