The FX weren't enhanced either. The one that they did fix, they didn't even half-ass it, they quarter-assed it!
Luke's White/Blue/Green all in the same shot Lightsaber.
Matte Boxes around X-Wings and Ties are also more noticeable.

I didn't go looking for the errors, they just pop out to me.
Also, since you just saw them, what do you think about the Magical Rocks on Tatooine with R2?
And the Disappearing Windows on Cloud City?
That's not exactly the transfer though. That's special effects/opticals.

Of course, I would love to see them done with all the opticals redone, the garbage mattes removed, the lightsabers redone, etc., but that's tinkering again. I do think that it was weird how he chose to do some things, but others, far more important ones, were ignored completely. That's kind of baffling. If it were me, I would let these films shine so brightly, our neighbours in the Andromeda galaxy could see the light!

Today, my wife and I watched ROTJ, and I liked it much more than the past few times.
I loved Luke's back flip onto that pathway, when he's trying to avoid fighting Vader. It reminded me of Anakin's backflip in the Geonosis droid factory, where he does the same thing. Or Leia asking Han to hold him, just like Padme asking Anakin to hold her in ROTS.

Also, when I asked my wife whom she thought Leia was referring to when he asked her about her memories regarding her real mother.

She immediately said Padme. I said, but Padme died right after giving birth to her. She said that daughters have a stronger connection to their mothers, just like Luke had a stronger connection to his father. She said she was force sensitive, and felt her.

My answer always was, that Bail Organa's wife and adoptive mother had died when Leia was young, and she never knew that she wasn't her real mother, and after that she had another Bail remarried. I guess, my wife's explanation makes more sense, and it came completely naturally from her.
Maybe, what we have been missed all this time, was some female insight. Lol

I really hope Luke won't turn to the dark side in the sequel trilogy. That'd most probably be very lame and generic.

i only meant that they are available. many people are complaining about the quality of the blu rays so its not like the blu rays are anything special. in a couple years the blu rays will become obsolete anyway.

the original movies should just be released in the special feature section on the new 4k blu rays that will come out. just release a cleaned up 480p version or something

honestly, i doubt enough people want the original trilogy theatrical versions. 200 or so guys obsessed over the original trilogy theatrical versions is not enough to make any money for a blu ray release.

So does that mean they include the orange blob under the speeder in Mos Eisely? Or the "broken" looking laser blasts at certain parts of A New Hope etc?

I think everyone's definition of what constitutes the "original version" may differ somewhat. I'd personally take just a cleaned up version with some of the original FX tidied up. Also, would these original versions retain some of the cuts to the laser blast hits which Lucas took out?
i watched all these star wars movies for the first time a couple years ago. all i want is all 6 movies, untouched as i originally saw them on blu ray in 2012 but with a 4k scan . i'm gonna wait for a new 4k release before i watch them again.

i can watch horror movies like the Friday the 13th set every year around halloween and enjoy them.

i can tolerate star wars movies once every 5 years or so at best. listening to luke whining in the first one and the boring swamp scene stuff with yoda in the second one take a few years to get out of my system lol. ROTJ sucks the most although the first scenes at jabba's and the 'pit with teeth' are worth watching. the rest of the movie is for kids.

so yeah, i can wait a few more years for the 4k release

Say Disney doesn't release them. Does entitled fan now boycott everything Disney?
How funny would that be if George, as final F-you to all the venom spewers, had some clause incorporated into the Disney contract stating that the originals never be released.
I, highly, doubt any such thing happened, and I'm sure we'll see them released at some point in time. Probably when Disney has regained distribution rights to all three, or at least, Episodes 5/6 in 2020.
Even if they are released, there will some entitled fans out there that will not rest until they find fault. By this point, finding fault is ingrained into a select wacky few.
I'm of the opinion that anybody who can release them, would release them, minus George Lucas himself, who, as the guy who created the whole thing, sees the old versions in a way nobody else does or can.

I will be pretty surprised if we don't hear anything about an UOT release in the not-too-distant future--whether before or sometime after the Episode VII release. I'm pretty sure Disney will release them with Fox distributing-- I doubt they would wait to the point of Fox losing the distribution rights.

But this all just speculation on my part, it means nothing. My original point was the most recent argument that broke out about Lucas-- HIS films, the FANS films, the Ted Turner thing, etc. It's outdated and moot.

Nonsense aside, I'd gladly wager $10 of Amazon vouchers that if and when the original trilogy are released on Blu-ray they'd be in the top 5 of catalogue release on the BD format. They'll be massive. There's a huge demand for them!

First of all, the whole "only a small bunch of internet whiners want the UOT" statement is total BS. That's insulting to fans of the UOT, the people that grew up with them, and just people that recognize the cultural importance of the films and the preservation of them.

I could just say-- 99% of the people that bought the Blu-Ray version think it sucks and actually still watch their UOT bonus DVD instead. You're one of the only ones that actually likes it! See? It's fun to just write BS that I know nothing about!

And the Blu-Ray versions were made from digital 2K scans, so you can't get a 4K version of them. As far as I know, the latest version of the films they could do a new scan of is the 1997 versions-- they'd have to redo all of the changes and color-timing going back to the DVD versions.

Can we change "entitled fan" to "lover of film" and "content fan" to "sheep" because they might be the dumbest things I have ever read online.

When the original Star Wars movies are eventually, inevitably, at some point, properly released on home video in 1080p or greater, this thread will still be a goldmine of entertaining passive aggressive foolishness.

sorry, 200 guys? there is a reason it has become a world wide PHENOMENA in regards to fans calling out Lucas on his revisions. there have been whole documentaries created about the fan vs. Lucas etc. this is not just some niche product ....the UA OT would sell quite well, believe me.

This. I don't know how that "entitled fan" meme got started with the brain-dead PT/SE faction resident here, but it makes absolutely no sense. Asking for the original theatrical cut of any other visually-groundbreaking motion picture (with an Oscar for "Best Visual Effects", among others) would be lauded on a film-centric forum, not scorned.

I know it's a long-shot, but it would be great if Disney used the UOT to help launch the 4K Blu-ray format next year. It would be the first time that Star Wars films would be released in the initial wave of a new home video format. Of course, they could/would also release simultaneous standard BD and DVD versions too, but the 4K BDs would be like owning actual film prints. Oh, to dream.

Doesn't fox still own the rights to A New Hope? Could throw a spanner in the works unless they can work a deal out between themselves, but as far as I was aware Disney only have the rights to 5 of the films.

Also Fox still has rights to all 6 films distribution until 2020. So a box set could be a long way off.

Quote:
Despite The Walt Disney Company's 2012 purchase of Lucasfilm Ltd. and the release rights to all future Star Wars films, Fox still retrains original distribution rights to Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope "in perpetuity" in all media worldwide. Fox also retains theatrical, nontheatrical, and home video rights worldwide for the franchise's five subsequent films through May 2020, at which time ownership will transfer to Disney. This complex relationship between Fox and Disney, particularly in regards to Fox's perpetual rights to Episode IV, creates an obstacle for any future boxed set comprising all nine films.

Lucasfilm own all six films mate. They have since Lucas negotiated the distribution rights for the prequels. I think they gave back Episode IV for the distribution rights for Episodes I-III. Now Disney own Lucasfilm. FOX just have the distribution rights.

Thanks, so this Fox owning distribution rights until 2020 is nonsense then?

And they don't own the rights to ANH?

Yes....

Fox has Distribution Rights until 2020, this is correct.
For all 6 Episodes.

They own nothing.

As KaineKinetic posted.

When Disney bought Lucasfilm, it wasn't common knowledge that Lucas had got back A New Hope with the prequel distribution deal (which possibly extended the original trilogy distribution rights until 2020), so a lot of misinformation was reported on-line and in the media.

Does it really matter? The vacuous opinions emanating from that screen name would be a Class-A turn-off regardless.

I kept up with a lot of the behind the scenes goings-on around '97-'00
Lucas, in order to make A New Hope made a deal with Fox.
- Lucas could keep Merch Rights
- Fox owns the movie (no sequels)
- - Everyone thought they were getting the better deal
- - - Lucas got the better deal.
- Lucas wanted to finish his story, Fox wanted more money.
- - Fox ponied up the cash for the next two (Empire and Jedi)
- - Lucas kept the Merch Rights and Movie Rights.
- - Fox got Distribution Rights for both - end of deal

Prequel Era 94-97
- Lucas wants to make the Back-Story
- Lucas Funds the movies himself, but can't distribute without a backer.
- Lucas devises a way to gain control of A New Hope
- Lucas makes a deal with Fox
- - Fox gets Distribution Deals for all 6 as long as Owner Rights go back to Lucas
- - Fox Agrees, Fox has Distribution Deal until 2020 ends.
