Watched the original trilogy tonight. All the changes Lucas made to these movies and he can't remove the super obvious matte lines around the ships in space? They were worse than the ones on Shout's Roger Corman movies and really took me out of the movie. I don't remember them being that bad on DVD. Good lord.

Other than that I thought picture quality was really good. I read the original film looked the worse with some DNR but I didn't find that to be the case at all, it looked just as good if no the best to my eyes. Lots of grit and grain.

The movies hold up well, though even after 4+ years of not watching them I get a little bored viewing them because I have seen them so many freaking times. I know that's sacrilege but it is what it is. Still, love them and the BDs looked great. There's only really one SE change in each movie I hate (Jabba scene, Fett's voice, dance number) so it's somewhat easy to tone them out and focus on the rest of it. RotJ is definitely still better than Revenge of the Sith for me.

The last time I watched these movies was probably on an uncalibrated set and I was really stunned at how not-blue Empire was.

They've still got grain, yes. Unfortunately it's the mid-Noughties Lowry variety which hangs there and only reacts when people or objects pass through it. It looks fine at first glance - or indeed if someone's attention is wandering because they've seen them so many times (I fall asleep every time I watch Star Wars, I shit you not) - but on closer scrutiny it's all a bit ersatz-looking IMO.

As for Empire, it's blue alright. You sure you haven't been messing with the colour temp on your TV again?

There's a lot of frozen grain I've noticed with these films. Empire IMO looks the best of the original trilogy.

I swear to god my warm setting is below 6500k and my between setting is above 6500k and I am left in this no man's land of switching back and forth and yelling at the TV. I know this TV's warm is warmer than my last TV's warm, I have done side-by-side tests. Don't have the equipment to see what the exact temps are though.

It's driving me rather insane, actually.

Ever consider just hiring a reputable pro calibrator and getting your temperature correct (as well as other things) once and for all?

Blue it is! I've said it several times before, I really don't like the color in general on the OT discs nor the digital look to them.

Yes. Thank you for correcting my error. I did enjoy Han shooting first and did not like the change. I tend to dislike modifications to movies unless both versions are available. The change to the intros do bother me, but certainly it is minor since it is just the studio logo, and I have to thank Disney for allowing more of these movies to be made, so they can be forgiven. Next, I request a Star Wars theme park on par with what Universal has done with Harry Potter.

Now that they shoot simultaneously and the movie cuts in a way that makes it irrelevant it doesn't really bother me anymore, honestly. Maybe I'm just over it.

Not sure if this has been brought up already but other than the music change replacing the Fox logo at the beginning of the films, any new changes to these digital versions? I heard there were a small few scattered throughout them?

It was all a false alarm from a reporter, Devin Faraci. He's covered his rear by saying these changes he heard about were done for a future release, not this one, but who knows.

The digital releases are just crappier versions of the blu rays.

I know we still don't know anything for sure about the originals being released anytime soon (or at all), but I noticed the other day that the WalMart I work at put a bunch of copies of the current Blu-Ray sets on their display up front by the checkouts. This could mean nothing, but to me it seems like they're trying to get rid of what copies they still have. It could just be because of the digital releases, though.

I wouldn't gauge the activity of Walmart stores as anything other than tying into the Vudu releases.

Oh God nooooooooooooooooo!!!

I was hoping that someone had bought these digital downloads by now and did a full report, but I haven't seen anything yet. I guess there will be something on youtube or the likes. I don't plan on getting these but just wondering if there were changes or how good these new extras are.

Are there even sites that review digital downloads? I wouldn't know. Confirmed these are the same versions as the BD though. The extras are some new featurettes, not sure how good they are.

Who knows how long a new release might take to happen, but with the digital just coming out I doubt a new disc release is coming this year.

It's coming this fall. I refuse to believe that all these rumors floating around for the last year will turn out to be just this crappy digital release that's not going to sell well at 90 dollars a pop.

I'm not so sure. Disney know how well Star Wars sells on video (we've even had a few hold-outs in this thread finally cave in and buy the Blu-ray 4 years after it was released) so it's not like they need to rush into anything. By the time Ep VII is in full swing in theaters we'll be into 2016, and the 40th anniversary will only be a year away after that.

If we don't get the remastered originals this year then I think that's it until the big four-oh.

I think Disney will try and cross-promote the originals in the next few years and then make a massive deal about the 40th Anniversary. It would be unusual for them to limit themselves with such restraint!
