The problem with your comparison is that Star Wars (as it was known then, before it got the "Episode IV: A New Hope" appellation for the 1981 theatrical re-release) was made as a self-contained film, as the prospect of continuing the story further seemed rather remote at the time of its production.

While Luke did get significant additional character development in ESB and ROTJ, his arc in ANH (going from naive farm-boy to hero by piloting his X-Wing to blow up the Death Star) was certainly sufficient for a single, one-off movie.

In contrast, the Sequel Trilogy has always been planned to span 3 films. That meant that they didn't have to cram in a fully-completed character arc for Rey in TFA as was done for Luke in ANH. It some ways it helps to keep the audience's attention throughout the trilogy as a whole since her character isn't fully set and as such is less predictable, but it is also a bit of a detriment to TFA as an individual film.

I'm sure that 90% of the audience would notice how incongruous "Jedi Rocks" is to the rest of ROTJ, but beyond that I'm pretty sure you're right.

Over the years I've noticed whenever the topic of Star Wars is raised even with the most casual of fans, the SE changes comes up almost every time (that and the quality of the prequels). Might be my peers, people in their 30s and 40s, I don't know. Even my Mum in her 70s wanted a copy of the Despecialized to watch.

My 65 year old parents noticed the changes in Star Wars, especially the Mos Eisly stuff. My mother hates the NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO in Jedi more than I do and I didn't think that would be possible. They probably hadn't seen the films since their theatrical releases and we netflixed the discs when they were first released.

My younger brother, who isn't a movie fan, has probably seen each film once and refers to the Prequels as "the shitty ones" because he can't remember the titles.

the only real change that "bugs" me is Kenobi's dragon call. That screech pulls me out of the moment every time.

I'm good with the rest of it and I saw Star Wars in the theater in late 77, I think during a re-release I didn't see it on the first run. But I saw Empire and Jedi first day of release! w00t!

I've heard of young millennials criticizing the stop motion effects in Robocop 2. So it's hard to believe they would be tolerant of a lot of the effects in the original edition of the Original Star Wars trilogy.

I totally agree, but this millennial generation doesn’t surprise me anymore with what they like. That’s why they keep releasing movies like Geostorm.

The special editions don’t seem like real movies to me. With a movie like Blade Runner you can look at all the different versions and there’s a logical progression starting from the theatrical cut to the Final Cut. All the changes and added/replaced effects make sense and feel like they belong in that world (not to mention the fact that all the versions were released). The special editions of Star Wars seem like bad fan-made versions. The added crap doesn’t feel organic. I’ll never think of them as legitimate.

In addition to the hardcore Lucas fans that prefer the SE because it represents his ideal vision, there’s also a generation of fans who simply grew up with the SE’s and have never even seen the originals. They haven’t thought or bothered to go hunting for them. This is what happens when they’re not readily available and included on DVD/Blu-ray releases.

You would think Disney would make a fortune by releasing the unaltered versions and this is what they want now is to milk every dollar they can out of Star Wars. It they would release them it would be a win/win for everbody, Disney and the fans.

Yeah, terrible disaster movies never existed before Geostorm. There certainly weren’t a lot of those in the 70s. Or beach party movies from the 60s.

It’s incredible that every single generation manages to forget that their elders said the exact same thing about them...and every new generation trashes what came before it (and then they pretend they didn’t.) It’s such an obvious cliche through the ages yet people still fall for it all the time.
