For someone who's never seen a Star Wars film, what would be the best order to show them all in? Just curious.
4, 5, 2, 3, 6. Explanation (contains spoilers).

That's why it looks the way it does.
Not just Lucas. John Knoll noted that the HD really was so sharp that they could see the brushstrokes in the make-up on people's faces. People often sneer at HD video, that it can't resolve as much detail as film etc etc but there are so many things with film that actively dither the detail in the image from capture all the way to projection. So when you're dealing with rock-solid 100% repeatable digital capture & playback with very little noise it's no wonder that it looked so unbelievably sharp. I dunno what they did to soften it in post-production but during the shooting they used filters in front of the lens to fog it up a bit.

You premised the question on someone who'd never seen any of the films, it seemed a reasonable note to make.

What I meant was how would you show it to someone who's never seen it for the first time.

99% of the population would just buy whatever they grabbed off the shelf first and wouldn’t care.

The one issue with Machete Order is you need the Special Edition ending to Episode VI. Hopefully when I burn my Despecialized Editions I can use seamless branching to have a UOT ending and a prequel-compatible ending...if I ever get around to doing that.

Disc 10: Prequel Trilogy extras including the IMAX cut of Attack Of The Clones

Disc 11: Original Trilogy extras including the Holiday Special and the Ewok films as easter eggs.

This kind of set will probably never happen but one can dream.
This is what I want as well. Then I want all of the HD extras on their own BDs and all of the SD extras on their own DVDs all with proper English subtitles.

Oh, I also forgot that I want the garbage mattes removed and all of the lightsabers fixed in every version except the original theatrical cuts.

Release order: Eps. 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3. This is how they were presented to world. Let the OT work its universal magic. Then go to the prequels, which look more modern, aren't as well-liked, but have some good stuff in them. Then catch up with the current stuff.

I understand the arguments of Machete order (which someone posted a link to), but leaving out Ep. 1 is missing a chunk of story, that a lot of people don't care about. But also good stuff like the Darth Maul fight. Present a new viewer with everything, and let them make up their own minds. Don't force yours, or the popular opinion, on them.

Also, don't worry about the UOT. Most people don't know or care. Show them the version that they can actually walk into a store and buy, or download legally, if they so choose. Not some cobbled-together bootleg, with all the potential problems that entails.

My GF is a pretty big fan nowadays, but didn't see the OT movies until the SE theatrical release in '97. The point is, don't force your nerd baggage on a new viewer. Just show the current versions, in release order, and let them decide. They can then follow their own path.

Show them Star Wars, Empire, Return Of The Jedi. If you hate them then show them the Prequels.

Exactly. Certain people here just can't understand their obsessive hate doesn't carry over to everyone - that everyone has their own opinion.
Hell, they might not like SW at all (I actually have a couple friends like that). I know kids that love the prequels and find the OT boring. Different strokes.

Probably the main problem with this, is no jabba reveal at ROTJ. It will mean nothing. And that was a huge part of it pre 1997.

I show people semi specialized editions. It's a good balance. Takes off the horrid parts but keeps some modern touches.

Hey, if there are SE fans out there, good for them. I just want the culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant and groundbreaking originals to watch and choose between. That’s all.

I've never understood people who question what order to watch or read a series in, the logical answer is always the order that they were released. Even if later stories chronologically take place before the original, they were written within the context that the audience is already familiar with the source material.

The "machete order" especially gets under my skin. It's just hipster nonsense.
