That’s what he claims, anyway.

Han never shot first. In the original Han shot only. Greedo never shoots at all.

They can't both be true, but I hear them both roughly equally.
Richard Zanuck, one of the producers, said just about every usable footage they could get of the shark is in the film. They tested it in a fresh water tank and everything worked fine. Taking it into the ocean was where the problems surfaced. The hydraulics and mechanics in the shark continuously malfunctioned prolonging the shoot even further. I don’t buy the idea they didn’t show it much because it looked awful partly because they had wanted to partly show it in the opening scene which is a scene that takes place at night so the shark wouldn’t have been seen much anyway. Also I’ve heard Spielberg speak of the making of the film on many instances in terms that I think contradict the notion he refused to do the film unless the shark was shown later.

I find it a stretch even for Lucas that he waited 20 years specifically to change one scene. Or are you being sarcastic??

When comparing an ordered alternate sequence of events it is logically consistent to use a sequential delineation because one action assumes the other. If someone wants to defend the change the best argument can’t be that Lucas intended that all along, or was restricted by technology. I suppose it’s possible he wanted it that way but was pressured out of it by collaborators. Has he spoken of the reasons motivating that change?

Huh, never somehow caught that before. The clothes are even off. That's going to kinda bug me now.

(Thanks for posting though, pretty interesting)

Yes but with different explanations. Originally he said it was to make Han look less like a cold blooded killer. Then he changed it to that Greedo always shot first and it only seemed the other way around because it was all done in closeups. The script debunks this story though. Then the last time I can recall him speaking about it was 3-4 years ago where he said he wanted to make Han a ‘John Wayne type’, the kinda guy who waits for the other person to fire or something.

The only reason Greedo didn't shoot was that he was interrupted by dying, so it's still correct to say Han shot first.

With those fingers I don't see how Greedo could even hold the blaster let alone pull the trigger.

I wonder if Lucas bought the blu-ray releases of the four Disney Star Wars films and changed them out of habit?

He wanted to be able to experiment with that and see what the public reaction would be, which is why every updated release of the special editions has a different length of time between the two shots.
Fun fact, the movie won the Oscar for Best Editing. Clearly the length of time between shots was fine as-is. I find Lucas' second-guessing of himself so baffling. It'd be like Scorsese going back repeatedly and fudging with the edit of the "What do you mean I'm funny?" scene in Goodfellas.

That would be ironic. The creator of Star Wars making fan edits to films he doesn’t own anymore.

Lucas always planned for Greedo to shoot before Han in order to hint that Han was strong with the force, which would be demonstrated by his lightning-fast Force Head Jerk. It was during this time that Lucas had the idea for Obi-Wan and Quigon to Force sprint at the beginning of TPM. This would tie in nicely with the Han Greedo scene. It’s like poetry. It rhymes. Since the technology wasn’t available yet to show the Force Head Jerk, he decided to save some time during shooting and that he’d tinker with it years later.

I hope Han is featured as a force ghost in Ep IX. In it he'll say: "Of course I was force sensitive, how do you think I dodged Greedo's blaster!?"

I don't think I'd stop laughing for a week.

I hope Ep. IX makes me like TLJ more. I go back and forth on that movie. It’s like a weird alternate timeline (like the alternate 1985 in Back to the Future Part 2) starring Bizarro Luke Skywalker.

A bunch of people here said "what for episode 8 to judge episode seven better. Look how well that turned out!
I hated seven since the night I saw it. I hated eight since the night I saw it.
I can't wait to hate nine as well.

Unnecessary response. I was just simply responding to someone’s question.
