It doesn't really matter what Lucas`s intentions were. It was what he delivered back in 77 that matters.

OK since there is no threads on these and no reviews either, i can just assume these are the butchered " lucas editions " ? I was really hoping someday that disney or whoever would somehow get access to the originals prints/scans and put SW on official blu ray the way they were theatrically. Guess not. I mean they shouldn't need his permission for anything since he sold it. Thanks god for my Harmy SW. Guess they will never be topped.

The 2004 masters for the DVD set and the 2011 Blu-Rays were made with DVD in mind, thats why the colour and contrast is so pumped up, they look eye catching on DVD for sure.

Thanks, I've been thinking about buying the movies off iTunes directly, but if the included digital codes give me the same thing, getting the actual new Blu-ray releases might be the better way to go - the iTunes version plus the discs! Works out to being the same cost, give or take.

No Empire? Yeah i do have a 4k setup but don't have any 4k SW. That would indeed be superior if Disney could just use Harmy's version and put those on 4k. I could die happy.

And for someone watching it for the first time they might even think Han fired slightly before Greedo because it’s hard to know exactly when the the two shots were fired. Lucas should’ve just added a subtitle if the line translates as a threat.

I think the scene looks better than the previous specialized versions, but it’s lost all or most of the “John Wayne never shoots first” theme that Lucas “originally” intended. That idea he had was much clearer in the ‘97 version, as (mac)clunky as it was.

Another sacrilegious idea would be to remove the line “Yes, I’ll bet you have.” Just have it end on Greedo saying “I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time” and then have the shots fired. That way Greedo gets in the last word before shooting and it implies he was looking forward to killing Han.
Here's a handy reply that I made earlier:

And I know they've done a few Criterions over the years but most labels are just getting rebuffed by the Mouse now. Or maybe Criterion's first UHD discs will be the original Original Trilogy!??!

I'd love to see them included as 'special features' on the big-bastard 4K boxset along with the original theatrical versions of the prequels and the 3D versions of the prequels too, but that's all pretty much a pipedream.
The thought that Lucas’ contract upon selling it to Disney stipulated that they can never release the originals still keeps me up at night.

It doesn't really matter whether there's a legal clause or not, whether he physically owns them or not (how many directors do "own" their work but are allowed to tinker with them all the same?) etc. Lucas is the author of the work - or the de facto author in the case of the directors of Empire and Jedi being dead - and as long as he doesn't want the originals released then they won't be released.

Granted, but if there’s no legal recourse, then we might get them after he passes. Maybe.

The team doing these versions are limited by what 35mm elements they can get their hands on. They did 4K83 first because they had a "pristine" film print. They're working on a 4K80 project, but the quality of the prints they have isn't as good, so it'll take a while as they mix and match to get the best possible version of each scene, and try and restore the scans.

Unlike the pristine Return of the Jedi print which needed very little work, this project is expected to take at least two years – many of the sources are faded, and have at least as much damage (perhaps even more) as the Star Wars prints we were working with.

Which is why I keep saying we won't get them until he passes, if ever (or he might have the most Damascene of conversions in the meantime, lol).

I really hope they release these Disney+ versions of 1-6 on standard 1080p blu rays.

All this talk about 4K77, 4K83, and Song of the South makes me wish I still knew how to get a hold of these things. I was across it a decade or so ago before I got into collecting, but I gave that up when I started paying for things and most places are gone now.

The additions and fixes in Empire are hardly as drastic as the other two movies.
