Lucas has said that the trilogies would be about the parents, the children and the grandchildren. Obviously there would be some overlap between them, a few appearances from the old guard in each one, but each successive trilogy is broadly about the new characters and the shadows that their forebears have cast.

[edit] Lucas was also going to go down a more metaphysical route with the Force, to really drill down into what it was (think of the Mortis trilogy in Clone Wars, a show which Lucas had a lot more input in than people may think).

Just returned from Skywalker.
It was okay, not great. But it was better than Force Awakens and infinitely better than Last Jedi!
But what can you do when you disregard Lucas' treatment, eff up two movies and them beg him to help fix the end?

I can't even muster the desire to see the new movie in the theater. I'll just watch it on disney plus since I got a year of it free from being a Verizon customer.

Sadly, these are my exact sentiments. It's amazing that Disney can throw $250 million at the screen, fill it with frantic, non-stop action and end up with a story that won't have but a tiny fraction of the impact on people as Lucas' original New Hope. It all comes down to storytelling and captivating characters. I think long after Rey, Finn and Poe have been forgotten, people will still be quoting Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Darth Vader.

I asked this on the trilogy forums, but that place seems to be completely dead at the moment: What are the six different sets of English subtitles that come with 4K83?

I think this is generational. The older I get, the more cynical I become. There are 3 Star Wars movies. Talking about any others is blasphemy. No offense to younger people but get your own childhood, there is no need to hijack mine.

Right, I see the filenames. I'm trying to establish what's actually on them.

I actually always assumed that was going to be what a sequel trilogy was like, with each one representing a different generation. I guess I can understand people were disappointed that the sequel trilogy wasn't about getting the old gang back together for more adventures, but I expected and appreciated the idea that they would have the same roles the prequel trilogy characters had in the original trilogy.

That's not to say I thought they totally nailed it with the sequel trilogy-- far from it. In retrospect at this point, I wish they hadn't thrown out Lucas' storyline, especially since it is now apparent they didn't have anything specific to replace it with. Lucas making the sequel trilogy himself like the prequels would probably have been a disaster, but get some good writers and directors to hammer it out for him would have probably been the way to go.

I played through the various srt files and the first three appear to be the same, just the dialogue on the screen. SDH Native has the R2 D2 beeps cheerily and things like, guard grunts were as the first three do not. Template appears to be the same as the first three. And Titles only has text during the titles at the beginning.

Does anyone actually know the answer? There must be some difference between the full, native and template files.

For that matter, the audio as well. There's apparently a 2018 mix of the 5.1, which I assumed was a remix but the Despecialised Episode V has an original 5.1 mix, so what's the story there? Episode V also has a 16mm mono mix with its own dedicated subs so is there different dialog?

"Original" 5.1 mix?
None of the original trilogy was 5.1 - they were all either 35MM 2.0 surround or 70MM 4.2 discrete or mono.

Carrie Fisher's death is what placed a downer on the new films, for me.

It's hard for anything to have as much impact as the original Star Wars did because of the amount of media saturation that we have now. These days, most films and TV shows - even big hits - are quickly forgotten because there's always so much new content coming out to compete for our attention (and $). When the original SW came out in 1977, there was nothing else like it. It was awe-inspiring. People watched it over and over for their entire childhood. Hard to see that happening now.

Exactly. In terms of sheer impact, there will never be another Beatles, another Elvis, another Star Wars.

It seems like even films that make a billion dollars are out of the theaters in a month.

Per the readme that came with the despecialised:
Code:
TRACK 1) 5.1 DTS-HD-MA [English] (1980 mix)

Why? I saw Star Wars 10 times in the theater from 1977-1978. Movies were in the theaters a lot longer back then. I saw Force Awakens in the theater 8 times in the span of one month.

I've seen the Disney movies dozens of times already and can't wait to watch Rise Of Skywalker on blu-ray.
