I have no idea what you mean by "Workprint Versions".

In filmmaking, a workprint = a work in progress.

Of course. But calling the originals "workprints" is ridiculous.

As opposed to the Academy-Award nominated originals. I bet the Academy would take back SW's best picture nom if they had been told it was a "workprint" that he just happened to distribute, as opposed to a finished film.

That's the essential problem with the SE's, especially the Tatooine scenes. CG just wasn't good enough in 1997 to do what he wanted. Jurrasic Park worked because so much of it was dimly lit (and the few bright scenes with lots of CGI stood out as the lesser shots of the film). For the most part, the CG was horrid - and so, so out of place. Even a few shots in the prequels were bad - Anakin on that mount, for example?

Let's hope they re-did some of what they re-did...at least now 14 years later the CG cartoons painted on could be painted on much better.

Peter Jackson was still shooting scenes for the extended cut of Return of the King after it won the Oscar for Best Picture and they knew he was working on it. There's also a Director's Cut of Amadeus made after it won Best Picture, an extended cut of Dances With Wolves after it won and 2 cuts of Avatar after its nominations. I really don't think the Academy cares that much.

I see Star Wars akin to classic oral tradition stories that changed with every retelling.

Hell, some of the classic stories we celebrate went through numerous changes over the years.

A great example would be the Grimm's Fairy Tales. Though it's hardly the only example.

You miss the point.

Peter Jackson didn't suddenly start calling the first film a "workprint". He was shooting extra scenes for a DVD.

The point is, the Academy Award winning, and nominated, films , are not available and were not "workprints". A major theatrical release sent to theaters and submitted for awards recognition is not a "workprint". Mentioning the academy, with the smiley, was simply an amusing way of making the comment.

Thankfully, Lucas agrees with me - he's stopped using that silly, incorrect, and inappropriate description and now he refers to them as the "classic" editions.

Ah.

Yes, I saw that interview where Lucas said, "I agree with BillieCassin and I shouldn't use the term 'workprints'." jk

If you notice, they apparently 'cropped' the bottom off of the landspeeder to give it the appearance of 'more lift'.
But in doing so, it now stands out like a sore thumb.

So, here is hoping that they can add it back in while still giving it the appearance of more lift, which maybe just lowering it's shadow might accomplish instead.

Wow! I thought I heard every criticism imaginable about the Special Editions, but you managed to surprise me! Let's hope they fix the bigger issues like the lightsabers before they fix something only one fan in a million will even notice/care.

I whould like the blu-ray box set to feature all of the versions of the original trilogy for ANH 1977 original cut , 1997 and 2004 special editions and the final version. For ESB 1980 original cut , 1997 and 2004 special editions and the final version. And finaly for ROTJ 1983 original cut , 1997 and 2004 special editions and the final version. All cleaned up and looking their best. This is one way to make all the fans and purists of star wars happy have all the cuts of the OT on blu-ray.

It's STILL a rushed bad effect.

Or, how about this...

Maybe they can fix ALL the screwups(including the lightsabers) from the SEs.

That because you can't see the forest through the trees when it comes to people wishing for character development. NOBODY is asking for that to happen. You just keep making this over-simplified interpretation of what people are asking for as to make it look like a ridiculous request when it's a perfectly reasonable one.

AND, the audio on the Lightsabers in EPISODE III didn't have that strong sound like in TPM.

That was deliberate because the sabers in the OT don't have LFE either.

What, in the Star Wars Universe, lightsabers lose their hums after a couple of years? Really?

Here is also hoping that they can digitally fix the guy on the left walking around with his fly open. Or was that custom? Maybe he really has a thing for C3PO...

I can't believe you called them Workprints Beast, I hope it was a slip of the keyboard otherwise it's borderline provocative. Or you're just living up to your user name. You monster!

Hopefully the Blu-rays will fix the fixes and we'll get some new news soon.

the special editions of the original trilogy are great and most of the changes where made for the better and in someways are. However The original theatrical cuts need to be persevered those are the cuts that a lot of the purists and fans of the OT want on blu-ray. I like both versions of the OT. If both versions of the OT are released on blu-ray I will be happy but if only the special edition of the OT is on the blu-ray box set I will not be disappointed. I have no problems with the special editions like some of the fans and purists have with them. I like all 6 films even the prequels.
