This is terrible news. So whenever I rewatch the Original Trilogy I have to sit through those absolutely horrific Prequels? It's just not worth it then.

No, because 3PO's memory was wiped in "Episode III".

For the same reason we don't treat the OT as holy relics, either; we're not purists. We watch the films for the fun of it, not as an obsession.

Fans of the prequels take note. Nicolawicz views the prequels as retarded and thus cannot fathom how someone might have a difference of opinion or a difference in taste other than his own.

Just yanking your chain.

So he meant for us to see The Phantom Menace first? I did not know that.

What happened in 77 then? Did he accidentally bring the wrong script and figure 'what the hell, I'm paying these people by the hour, let's just shoot this one'?

I wonder if that's on film.

That would make a great extra.

Not at all. According to the "Empire of Dreams" documentary, Lucas wrote the OT as one long screenplay, but was only given a certain amount of money. So, he took the first part of that script, and the original film was the ultimate result. The remaining sections of that script were later expanded, to form both "Empire" & "Jedi".

Don't question George Lucas, you hater!!! He has a master plan and has never changed his intentions with the movies!!! You aren't a true Star Wars fan if you think Lucas didn't have everything planned out. He's a genius and you owe him your money without question for all the joy he's provided you.

Epic reference win. That gave me quite a laugh.

You can watch them however you want. I'm pretty sure George Lucas isn't going to be personally offended if you don't watch the films chronologically (that sounds like something you shouldn't even have to say, but I guess not).

Personally, I find the IV V I II III VI order fascinating. Personally, I'd be more inclined to just watch IV V III VI, and skip out on the awful and mostly pointless first two prequels. III is easily watchable without the other two (and in my opinion, works better by itself without incorporating the awful story of Attack of the Clones).

I think he was talking about the PT. Or at least that is how I undestood it. For me the order will be: IV, V, VI, I and done. I never thought Clones or Sith were very good films (Clones was just dreadful IMO) so they will more than likley not get watched more than one time since I have to buy the set to get TPM.

He had a very basic outline of the entire story. He wanted to start from the middle (Episode IV) because the first chapters of a story are the "boring part."

After completing the prequels, it does seem that he designed them to be seen first-- the idea is to change your perception of Darth Vader in the originals, and realize that the films were really about his journey and not Luke's.

But of course you can still go with the "classic" story structure of original to prequel.

That's not what I was referring to.

No, the PT was based on a 10-15 page outline that Lucas had written in '73 or '74, before he wrote the "big script" which formed the OT's story. It wasn't until 1994, when Lucas began writing Episode I, that he realized the bulk of that outline contained major plot points that would fill Episode III, so he invented a whole new political backdrop for the prequels (which was sourced from events surrounding the Vietnam era).

No he was talking about the OT. I don't know why you would think he was talking about the PT considering its about the devlopment of the OT, and they were discussing ANH at the time. This isn't to say that he planned everything out. Things changed in the ESB and ROTJ parts of the script over time.

Yeah, no kidding it takes a lot of effort to block out whiny annoying Hayden-Anakin when trying to watch the OT. Adding him at the end of RotJ certainly doesn't help.

I know, when Tarkin makes him release the 'don't frighten us with your sorceror's ways' guy I half expect to hear James Earl Jones grumble under his breath "Count Dookoo never had to let anybody go when HE was force choking them."

I heard that if this discussion thread reaches the 1000 page mark (currently at 731), that it will be included on the ninth disc as a special feature on the saga collection. This (YES this thread!) will scroll "Star Wars style" across your TV in genuine Star Wars font. Since it will easily take 150 hours to scroll ~20000 messages, it is a great marketing ploy to add 150 hours to the extras. We are going to be famous!

Each of the OT films has an archival commentary on it. Basically it's interviews with the cast members from the Lucasfilm archives from around the time of each films release. It will be great to hear some of the deceased actors (Cushing/Guiness) talk about the films as they're playing. That's probably going to be the best extra on the set.
