Fox still owns rights to the 1977-1983 versions but those will expire in 2020

Which is why I think FOX will want to do the restorations themselves (unless they are contractually unable to for some reason). They're probably gonna try to milk what they've got for as long as they've got it, so I don't think Disney will be releasing the UOT, but FOX. Maybe the two corporations will go in on it together to split the cost since Disney is going to inherit their labors anyways.

Who knows.

Yes, Fox has the rights until 2020. Episode IV is under their ownership indefinitely.

I wonder if Disney could strike some sort of deal with them regarding not only the Star Wars franchise, but also the Marvel franchise.

So, Lucas has handed over everything? This means anything Star Wars related, toys, books, everything, period, etc?

He's got so much money as it is, I guess I just don't understand why he'd even bother doing this. He commented that it's time to let them go and let someone else expand the stories, but he was so gung-ho about altering all of his old movies and refusing to give us the OT. Why would he all of a sudden decide it's OK to sell off what he claimed to be so passionate about? Doesn't really make sense to me. He was such a Nazi over his Star Wars crap and not giving fans an OT and making ridiculous changes, now, he just throws in the towel and doesn't care?

And I know, 4 billion dollars is a lot, but he already had more money than him and 100 generations of his family could ever spend. This is the man, who, up until a year or two ago was still adding BS to his movies and cutting and pasting crap in and out, cause they were his babies and he wanted to make them better and cared so much for his stories and characters... Now, he sells and doesn't care? Total dick-move ruining the OT, refusing the to let the original out and now he sells. Dick of the century!

You know Fox will want to cash in on the new trilogy some way. The only way possible would be to release the UOT in 2015. I'm willing to bet it will happen. Disney has released blu-rays in conjunction with other distributors (i.e. with Paramount for Avengers), so it's always a possibility that Disney/Lucasfilm and Fox could make it happen.

It would also garner some seriously needed goodwill with fans, but not that Disney needs it. This new trilogy will likely smash records (giving they get the right talent to make the films) regardless. Fox are the ones who are going to want to get a piece of the pie, and the only way is by releasing what we want.

I'm just speculating but I would be surprised if a UOT set wasn't being planned for release in late 2014/early 2015 before the release of Episode VII.

By the way, everything about that sentence I just typed has me giddy

Fox owns the original theatrical cuts until 2020, and Episode IV indefinitely

After "John Carter", we can hardly look to Disney as the saviour of a franchise like Star Wars, or just assume it will be able to do much better with the new trilogy than Lucas did with the last one.

If Lucas sold the theatrical cuts to Disney, then Disney would have to decide to restore and release them, then have Fox distribute. Fox doesn't own the films but they currently own the distribution rights on 1-6. I have a feeling that will change in the near future. It wouldn't surprise me to see Disney offer Fox loads of cash to buyout the distribution deal early.

If Lucas somehow kept the theatrical cuts out of the deal with Disney, he would have to decide to restore and release them and work out the details with Fox for distribution.

No one has any official information on the details of the deal regarding the UOT right now. My best guess is that he sold those too. On the other hand, who knows? He may have kept ownership of the UOT and the craptastic Holiday Special just so they could never be seen again. I hope not, at least on the former.

Rogen stunned by Lucas' 2012 theory

George Lucas recently told funnyman Seth Rogen he believes the world will end in 2012. "George Lucas sits down and seriously proceeds to talk for around 25 minutes about how he thinks the world is gonna end in the year 2012, like, for real. He thinks it. ... I first thought he (Lucas) was joking... and then I totally realized he was serious," Rogen told WENN.com. (Handout photo)

Good post. Fox does not own these films, they are under contract as the distributers. Disney can either work out a separation of the deal or distribute the UOT through Fox.

So Disney now owns the rights to 1-6 plus the new ones to be made (of course) but Fox owns the distribution rights of 1-6? Either way it sounds like we will get the UOT eventually. Hopefully one day they will remake 1-3 too. lol!

Luke Skywalker could be returning. And it seems like Episodes 7-9 is the best of all the trilogies.

Fox owns the distribution rights to the saga as of right now. In 2020, Disney/Lucasfilm gets the rights back for Episodes I, II, III, V, and VI.

20th Century Fox outright owns Episode IV. It was the deal Lucas made in order to finish the original trilogy back in the day.

The reason Fox hasn't pulled rank on Episode IV over the years was because of Lucas' pull. With this new deal now, Fox can pretty much do what it wants with Episode IV, unless Lucas has also struck a deal with Fox about that film and which versions can be seen to the public after he's gone.

Disney will do everything in its power to get Episode IV under it's banner. If I'm 20th Century Fox, I never let go of Episode IV. Never. No matter how much cash the mighty Disney throws my way.

But knowing Fox, here's the deal that gets made; Disney will let them keep Episode IV if they give back Daredevil, Fantastic Four, and the X-Men characters.

Who knows? Maybe Fox says they'll keep the Marvel characters and outright give Disney Episode IV.
