I still think there will be a lot of secrecy, there certainly was before Revenge of the Sith. I also think there's a lot of contractual obligations when Lucas signed over LucasFilm to Disney, one being they honor his wishes and intents when it comes to handling the films. No different from many studios honoring the wishes of passed filmmakers, even though their estates may have little to no control over the films themselves.

Listen though... remember back in the day of DVD, when Star Wars had several releases, and they still wanted more money out of us? What did they do? They eventually gave us the "theatrical" editions as a bonus feature (albeit, a crappy non-remastered transfer). But, they did give us something reminiscent to the theatrical versions.

The same will be with Bluray. They will eventually need a reason to re-release the Star Wars Saga, and they will need a good reason for us to buy it again. Just like before, and just like we've all done with Lord of the Rings... sigh.

This time around, they won't make the mistake they did with the DVD bonus, this time I believe they will have a remastered Theatrical edition (maybe as a bonus again if we re-buy a new saga set? So be it.)

Does anybody honestly think though that Lucasfilm (and Fox and Disney) haven't heard the complaints in this department? They know what we want... they're just holding out. And a new trilogy in 2015 seems to be a perfect time to capitalize on the past Star Wars.

Help us Walt Disney Pictures, you're our only hope...

This movie seems like Lucas was really trying to connect to a new generation to get involved in the saga, the under 10 yr old's.
The wooden acting was insisted upon by Lucas. It was pretty well documented at the time - he wanted it to be all 40's serial - poor, poor Natalie Portman, is all I can say.

You can disagree, but that doesn't make you correct.

It's so funny we go pages and pages in this thread and so much incorrect info comes around back again.

I don't have the time to dig it up, but there was an article - I want to say it was Business Week but I can't recall, it was a magazine like that - where they actually went pretty in depth (to a surprising level, I thought) about how the deal happened.

What was most surprising was how frank Iger was - that basically, yeah, George wanted to keep more control, but Disney wouldn't do a deal like that. Iger made it very, very clear that Lucas would be a consultant, but that Disney had the final say in everything. I wish I could recall the exact wording Iger used, but it was his typical blunt self and it was made crystal clear that Disney now has complete control and veto power over everything. They have no obligation to Lucas whatsoever.

I think people take Star Wars too seriously. It's not supposed to be Kubrick, people.

We already know what it is. We just want to see the same films we grew up watching. We just want the original films in HD. There is no mystery to be had.

Oh, and I lied above - it was easy to dig up. I think I'm going to make a standard post with this and the link to the Secret History of Star Wars to re-post every few pages to stop people from spending pages and pages discussing incorrect things as if they are factual.

"Iger understood Lucas’s concerns. “George said to me once that when he dies, it’s going to say ‘Star Wars creator George Lucas,’ ” he says. Still, Iger wanted to make sure that Lucas, who was used to controlling every aspect of Star Wars, from set design to lunchboxes, understood that Disney, not Lucasfilm, would have final say over any future movies. “We needed to have an understanding that if we acquire the company, despite tons of collegial conversations and collaboration, at the end of the day, we have to be the ones who sign off on whatever the plans are,” says Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios.

Lucas agreed, in theory. The reality of giving up control weighed on him, though. At the end of every week before she flew home to Los Angeles, Kennedy says, she asked Lucas how he was feeling. Sometimes he seemed at peace. Other times, not. “I’m sure he paused periodically to question whether he was really ready to walk away,” she says."

God no. It had bootleg written all over it and was the last one on the rack for 89.99. It's even in one of the older style cases.

No idea. The back was too hard to read. Looked like just a synopsis of the films. LOL they could be Laserdisc copies of the OT for all I know.

I'll settle this once and for all: there will never, ever, be a release of the original unedited versions of the original unedited films. There simply isn't enoough demand among movie fans to justify Lucasfilm remastering those films and Lucasfilm simply doesn't want to.

Has anyone ever seen the DVD releases of the original films? Inferior sound, inferior special effects ... I'm glad Lucas did not remaster those films because they are not Lucas' vision. Films get upgraded all of the time. Jurassic Park, Jaws, Close Encounters, Star Trek ... they all have edited content. You'd think that those who keep complaining about it aren't fans of the films at all.

Gone With The Wind is another great film that received extensive remastering and was even originally filmed in black and white but underwent an extensive "colorization process" that transformed the film into glorious color. You would be hard pressed not to find a film that hasn't been edited in some way.

Two of your four examples also preserve the original versions for viewing, one was only given a 3D conversion, and the other has never been altered.

Everything in this sentence is completely, totally, and absolutely false.

So we're thinking someone bought the real thing and then returned this monstrosity with the same receipt?

I'd be curious to see inside.
