As for your second point, don't forget that in the opera scene Palpatine laid the groundwork, telling Anakin that Plagueis learned the power to cheat death and he passed everything on to his apprentice before his apprentice killed him. Then, when Palps reveals himself as a Sith Lord, he tells Anakin: "Only through me can you achieve a power greater than any Jedi. Learn to know the dark side of the Force, and you will be able to save your wife from certain death". There's no 'ifs' or 'buts' there, Palps is quite unequivocal about it.

Only when Anakin has actually turned does the crafty bastard then tell him that only one has learned the power to cheat death, and that if they work together they can discover the secret. I know some folks regard that as Palpatine in CYA mode, but I've always thought that he was telling Anakin exactly what he wanted to hear to get him on-side. Heck, it may even be that he needed someone with Anakin's latent power to finally crack Plagueis' secret.
1 - what?
2 - exactly!
I feel that Anakin, at that moment of "WTF, man, you just told me you knew how to stop death!!!???" and just whip his 'Saber off of his belt and slice as quick as possible, Palpy in 3rd's.

It opens up a whole new can of worms w/ the Sith History and the Force's possibilities.

Wasnt Palpatine hinting that he himself was the pupil that learned of the "Cheat Death" Powers? Or was that supposed to be a long, long, time ago.
Sidious is Plagueis' Apprentice.

Ian McDiarmid owned in the prequels as Palpatine. I was extremely pleased that Lucas brought him back to reprise is role from ROTJ. IMHO he is the best thing about ROTJ.

Some people still question it, some others still never see a connection.

Just watch his facial expression when he says "It's ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself." That says it all.

I know that... I'm just saying that i know people that don't realize it.
I'm also sure that the average movie goer doesn't put much thought into it either and that to them, it is just a throwaway line. especially since Plagueis' is never mentioned ever again.

This is going to sound embarassing now but it took me about 5 or 10 minutes watching Phantom Menace for the first time to realise the obvious about his other guise! Oh! Its him!

Phantom Menace is so bizarre. On one hand you have a film obviously directed at young kids. On the other hand youve got all these Senate / Council meetings which must bore kids stupid! I do have a soft spot for Phantom Menace.

I gave Lucas too much credit...
I thought that that couldn't possibly be so obvious that it was just a fake out.
It was Clones that made me think that I was right, what with Palps and Sidious both being in different sections of Coruscant at the same time.

Then, I was working for Wally World in early '05 and I was a cashier at the time. We got the Episode III toys in, and someone buys the Paply/Sidi "transforming" one and ruined it....

I was really hoping that there would have been more to it, that Sidious was Controlling Paply and that one was a clone of the other...

But isnt the Plagueis "feat" the only reason for Anakin to swing to the dark side and the reason "he hangs in there" for fear of the prophecy/death of Padme.
I think he mentions it to Padme later on.

Kaine:

CYA = Cover Your Ass, i.e. if someone backtracks to cover a mistake or an error that they made. Or in Palpatine's case, to say to Anakin "remember all that cool 'not dying' stuff I said you could use to save Padme? Um, I don't actually know how to do it but together we can solve it..."

Even if we take his opera story to mean that Palpatine DOES know the secret ("[Plagueis] taught his apprentice everything he knew") and that he's not going to spill it (if ever), it's a bold move by Palps to say the opposite at the exact moment that he's just turned Anakin.

I've been watching the saga with my almost 5 year old son for the first time these past few weeks. We've watched them in release order, 4-5-6, then 1-2-3.

2 things I've found interesting.

First, after the big reveal in Empire, he turned to me with a shocked look and said, with utter desperation in his voice,
[Show spoiler]"Darth Vader isn't really Luke's dad is he? He's just telling him that, right?"
I just thought to myself, that's why you watch them in release order with newcomers. I loved it... so fun to experience that "moment" again with a first timer.

Second, my son LOVED Phantom Menace, especially... wait for it ...Jar Jar. He cracked up every time he was on screen. Oh, and he didn't mind the Senate scenes at all because, admittedly, they are visually stunning. He loved all the floating pods and different aliens. He reacted the in the same way as he did when we watched the cantina scene in ANH for the first time. So... while I've always personally really liked TPM more than most, watching it with my young son really helped me appreciate it a little more than before.

It's one of my favorite moments in the entire saga. Same with Duel of Fates and the seismic charge chase in Clones. For all their issues each of the PT films have at least one really memorable, 'this is pretty awesome' sequence.

What if Plageous cheated death by transferring his consciousness into Palpatine??

MIND - BLOWN!

I have so many good ideas, I wish I could submit them as consideration for the new trilogy. hehe

I don't think so because Palpatine seemed so proud of killing Plageus in his sleep.

I doubt this. I've read plenty of literature on the Sith and it just doesn't fit. More than likely he probed his mind for years looking for additional knowledge.
