Then take a look at the shot from the previous HD and DVD release. The skin is now more in focus and i've looked at it a dozen or so times on an A/B comparison, and I wouldn't be surprised if its been totally replaced. Thoughts?
I think I asked about the Rancor Pit change a few posts prior to this. Clearly improved while still faithful to the original intent.

And we only lost 13 pages? I'd figure half the thread would be gone.

To be fair, it was noted quite a while back in the thread that it would require re-rendering everything to do a rescan.

Since apparently the Digital Files are the only versions available with the all the additional edits and tweaks of the 2004 DVDs.

It would be ungodly expensive in the case such as A New Hope, where there's tons of minor changes all through the film.

So at best they could only create a Frankenstein cut where it was two different sources being combined together.

I wish I could find the post. It's from some Star Wars website that talks about the things that were done to the films.

OK, now with the CGI Yoda in TPM the films are pretty much perfect for me ...
The one and only thing I want to know before the box comes out:

Will the box be regionfree?

I am pretty happy they haven't replaced the rancor with some CG version.

It's 20th Century Fox. IIRC, they always tend to be region free. See: The Alien Anthology.

That's why people are feeling comfortable ordering the UK sets to avoid the book packaging.

Of course, it certainly could end up being region locked... but it's certainly unlikely.

Did you not see my picture post? IDENTICAL, just better resolution. They have the same creases, folds colours, everything. They haven't changed a thing, it is just clearer because of the upgrade in resolution. Imagine how it will look uncompressed on Blu Ray.

Also, more than likely NOT blu ray footage anyway, but the '04 version, so it wouldn't have changed at all.

C'mon guys! They just cleaned like 20 pages from the thread over night.

Can we take some advice from Yoda about avoiding this? "Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny."

So how about not bickering back and forth over a difference of opinion, and bringing the thread back down a dark path?

I am looking forward to this release and hope that the prices drop like LOTR to 69.99..I would not hesitating to get the UK version and better packaging if it is priced the same..all my UK purchases have been fine to date and some cases a better buy

Yeah... I could simply buy the set when it comes out in Europe (even sooner than in the US) but the US set looks so much better!

Do you think the fact that the Denmark set is confirmed regionfree has anything to say about the US being regionfree?

Hmmm. Nope. Because the tone of the information wasn't overwhelmingly negative like they are there.

Sorry, MP - I don't thnk I even watched my DVD of ROTJ, so I'm more familiar with the old hard matte version from the original film.

No need to apologise, I understand your point now. It has changed from the original original, but not from the last release in '04.....and now '11.

This month's Empire Magazine has a look at 5 deleted scenes from the Blu-Ray. Haven't had a chance to look at it but it says this on their website, for their Magazine preview.

Think you've seen all that Star Wars has to offer? Think again. With the Blu-ray release of the original trilogy looming, we look at five unseen deleted scenes from the saga that will appear for the first time on Blu-ray. With the filmmakers talking us through the new scenes and explaining just what works and what doesn't in each case, this is the perfect primer to the new release
I'm a subscriber so hopefully should get a look at this sometime this week. If I have time I'll upload scans if anyone wants a look too?

Sorry Beast, I was tracking down the article on that site and editing as you posted. Check my original post again and see if it was the second link?

merlinpants,

Yeah, I read that article you provided with your second link. I still don't like the tone of the article but it does give a lot of good information...if completely accurate.

As it sits, we're looking at 2K scans or 1080p scans for the films. And with the Prequel Trilogy in consideration, I'm willing to bet that the Original Trilogy scans are 2K.

However, even clues in the current master indicate Lucas used poor judgment in 2004 and may re-tweak the image. The blockade runner's cool blue tone stands in stark contrast to Revenge of the Sith, released a year later, which reverts back to the original white tone, indicating a nullification of the 2004 decision. And while Lowry acknowledges that the 2004 master was acceptable only as a standard-def project, Lucas has indicated that that master is to be the "for all time" version. [58] He even stated, when asked why he didn't spend money to refurbish the original, that millions of dollars had been spent to make the Special Edition, and that his work restoring the films was basically done. [59] It would not be surprising if any further tweaks, or the Blu Ray release, used the HD master of the 2004 release as a base. ILM's 2004 visual effects work on the film--such as new shots at the end of Return of the Jedi and a brand new version of Star Wars' Jabba scene--were done using the HD scan, so if the 2004 master is thrown out, so would all the revision work that went with it, which means we may be stuck with it. That Lucas shot his last two prequels in the same resolution indicates he is more than comfortable with a 1080p master of his films.

Interesting points in that article, but for Blu Ray, it appears a rescan was necessary according to Lowry.

Excellent! That must be one of the things that Bill Hunt hinted at as to why they couldn't discuss the deleted scenes.

Please feel free to keep us informed when you get the magazine. Mmmmmm, Deleted Scenes.
