Here's another TPM comparison, this time between DVD (top) and screenshots from http://moments.starwars.com/visualizer (bottom):

It does look great and I don't mean to nitpick but isn't the planet in the first blu ray shot a bit too bright? It's like the contrast/gamma is way too high.

I think it's too dull in the other shot. Look at space and compare the stars. It's an important fix that adjusts shadow detail - the planet should be bright from the looks of it.

The stars will be what I look for in pretty much all the shots. Are there stars? Because if there are stars in space, then they did the space exterior shots right for the first time since the 1990's on home video. Maybe longer, I don't know, I'm not that old.

You're right about the shadow detail and stars but they do look like two extremes, either it's too dull or too bright. The planet is overexposed though. But then again,( I don't know if any of you noticed this) the initial Death Star II screencap was too bright and the shadow was looking brown.. I came across a newer screenshot on one of the links posted in this forum and apparently they corrected that while still maintaining brightness for the rest of the shot. So I guess the final blu ray will be close to perfection.

EDIT:
If you see the white land area of the planet, it is overblown and and you can't see any detail. It is the equivalent of crushed blacks. Either it's too dull and the blacks are crushed while the whites don't appear white(there is a slight yellow tint) or it's way too bright and the shadows are lost while the whites are overblown and you can't see anything. I'll be happy with the second extreme as long as the whites aren't too far gone as then you can always reduce the gamma, etc at your end but if you do this with the first extreme you'll get 'illuminated'/grey blacks, you can't get back detail which isn't there(stars, for example).

I haven't seen a lot of the screencaps - the forum here moves so fast.

But yeah, I would say a lot of what we're seeing is still really inaccurate and our own sets and personal calibrations (whether those calibrations are correct or not) will probably make a big difference.

Why do Blu Ray movies always look brighter than DVDs? It's definitely a good thing and seems consistent with all movies. Is MPEG-2 just that awful?

Wow. The Phantom Menace is going to look amazing! Why couldn't the OT have received the kind of TLC that TPM received?

Yeah, I noticed that about the screencap after my post. I decided I better take a closer look at the planet itself. You're absolutely right about it - I just don't know if this will actually be an issue with the Blu-ray. I really don't know if I trust the screencaps at this point to be truly accurate. Nobody seems to have the right answer and I don't want to argue - just saying that until there is sufficient evidence beyond fanboy arguments, I will continue saying that people should err on the side of caution.

Hope for the best, but assume the worst I suppose. I'm hoping for the best and assuming the best, but that's because I'm an idiot, so don't follow my example.

The O.T might look like this too. It is film after all and especially the lightsaber cross in Rotj is looking great. The reason you maybe feeling like this is because the TPM was really looking that bad on DVD. It's quite a huge leap.

Ok, this is my first post here on this thread. I read a lot of posts here and came to the conclusion that some of you are so used to watching blu-rays that you tend to forget what a DVD on a big TV screen looks like.

I am sure that the Star Wars BDs will look great on a big screen. I have no doubt about that ;-)

Would you guys flip if Qui Gon was added to the end of Return of the Jedi where Luke sees the ghosts of Yoda, Obi Wan, and Anakin?

I would be happier if he was added to Rots and some parts of Empire and Rotj where he, Obi and Yoda talk and guide Luke. Don't start bashing me now.
Btw, my favorite movie is Esb and I'm not biased towards any trilogy.

It would be sort of unnecessary. Since Qui-Gon really has no impact on Luke's life.

Seems sort of along the lines of there's no reason for Obi-Wan or Yoda to mention him to Luke either.

But as someone else said, I wish the scene planned for RotS was restored to the film. But it seems unlikely.

Guys, I don't know about yous, but I am frickin' pumped for this release.

I haven't watched the original Star Wars Trilogy in nearly 10 years. And I just cant wait to get the Blu-Rays and just stick them on and enjoy them.

I'm not an obsessive geek so I dont really care about the changes, but as long as it looks and sounds good, I'll be happy with my purchase.

2 weeks on Monday for us Brits. Hopefully we get a full review next week. No doubt Lucas will have some sort of embargo on the reviews though so we won't get to see them until it's too late and the films have been dispatched from the sellers.

+1, I just hope the PQ of the OT is decent. Surprised this set hasn't leaked online anywhere yet. Most things tend to get leaked weeks before release (ie. LOTR EE). I hope it doesn't get leaked at all actually , until the release date... AUS release date is 14th September, have 3 preordered from Big W (group buy), cant wait

Do you think Qui-Gon's death scene might be "updated" on the Blu-rays?
I've never read some much cr*p in all my life. Its even worse than explaining how 'The Force' is, actually, a micro-organism.

No new post in 90 minutes? Is the world at a end?

Three weeks left, still planning to buy them in store on that Friday morning even if I will be paying more for them. For those of you that are pre-ordering, do you expect to have them in by Thursday?
