It's fairly obvious why they used the DNR. They want the movie to look clear like the other two movies.

Why would lucasfilm do this?
Maybe they did it back in 98 to make the characters fit more into the digital settings? Remember, they shot almost all of the film on 35mm, but scanned it later and did all the sfx only in the digital files. It is possible, they filtered the files before doing that.

Absolutely right, it's just what they have done with that picture that is the problem here.

Getting more excited! As long as RotS looks amazing as early indications suggest, I'm sure I can live with whatever the other prequels look like. Any word on AotC? I heard the grain reduction makes Christopher Lee look at least 75 years younger.

I mean... just because you see 2 samples posted 20 times, doesn't mean you've seen 20 examples. And the funny thing is... nobody knows why that Qui-Gon photo is so soft. Is it because of DNR? Is it because of motion blur? Or is it simply a misfocused shot that made it into the final cut of the film? I don't know for sure. Do you?

The rest of the stills we've seen from TPM are not "pretty bad" as you claim they are. To me, the rest of the stills are about on par with the Aliens Blu-ray. Clear evidence of DNR, but still very decent.

These 2 screenshots from TPM looks astounding. People really complain abou everything these days

So for the folks who have the discs already. Do the video segments on the bonus discs play in full screen or are they in a smaller window with a border around it similar to how they played on the iPad app?

I still cannot believe the price point for the Jurassic Park trilogy. Seems a bit much in comparison to the Complete Saga. But I'm getting both so...

That screenshot just reminded me of the absolute worst thing about Episode III: Padme's death. Yeah, there's a galaxy-spanning civilization with technology at a level nearly indistinguishable from magic, but they can't figure out what's causing her to die. Yeah, she's "lost the will to live" (while giving birth to twins no less) and that's whats causing it. Either that or the humors in her body are out of balance. Or it's lupus. Maybe some midichlorians from Anakin infected her when he force-attacked her on that lava planet or something? Obviously she had to die to fit the story into the OT, but it was handled horribly.

The OT Films are looking good despite the use of old 2004 masters.
It's a bit Hyperbole about this Transfers.

Could they look even better with new 4K Remastering?
Yes of course.
But that's not a reason to be that negative about the old masters.
They look really good. Not spectacular but good.

Isn't DNR a benefit for the prequels since the real characters are dealing with CGI characters? I thought that the more rubbery and plastic the real people look like, the better they merge with the dated CGI characters in the first two prequels?

So has there been a general number grade consensus with these blu-rays yet? From all the bits of pieces of info from everywhere, this is what I assume:

TPM:
Video: 4
Audio: 5

AOTC:
Video: 4
Audio: 5

ROS:
Video: 5
Audio: 5

ANH:
Video: 4.5
Audio: 5

ESB:
Video: 4.5
Audio: 5

ROJ:
Video: 4.5
Audio: 5

Are these the accurate video/audio grade assumptions?

Member "crs" is the only one that has provided proof of owning the actual Blu-rays (IFAIK). Hopefully, he will see your post.

It should be. AOTC and ROTS were filmed digitally in 1080p. So this is it for those two films as this is the best they will ever look, period.

All in all, I have to say that the Blu-Ray images look much better than the HDTV ones.
I agree they did the best they could do with this one. And the result is MUCH better then the HDTV version in every screenshot.
