He was toying with Vader. This catches even Vader off guard when he exclaims, "wow, dude, you've gotten old and weak." The way I see it, if Obi had wanted to fight Vader Dooku-style, he very well could have. But that wasn't his intent or his plan. In that sense, I'm glad it was left as is. Still, having the sabers fixed all the way throughout the fight would have been nice.
I had never thought of it this way, but it makes sense. I mean, if Yoda and Dooku were able to fight, Obi-Wan should have been able to.

Either way, ROTJ can't be the worst since it has the most emotionally charged moment int he whole series: the battle (lightsaber duel) between
[Show spoiler]Luke and Darth Vader in the Death Star.

Fixing the color and removing some of the matte lines in the rancor sequence for the 2004 dvd release was one of the few changes that I actually liked. I remember watching the special editions in the theater back in 1997 and thinking, you can add in a terrible CGI song and dance number, but you can fix some of the color timing and mattes for the rancor sequence!!! At least Lucas and ILM finally got it fixed in 2004. I think it actually looks preaty good now.

Interesting interpretation. I'll agree to that.

Hopefully they're re-rotoscope ANH at some point. It would instantly eliminate all problems regarding the hues of the lightsabers not only in the Vader/Kenobi fight, but also the hue when Luke is practicing with the remote on board the Falcon, as well as fix the inconsistencies when Luke ignites the saber for the first time in Ben's hut (and perhaps they can smoothen out the splicing at that moment).

yeah, it looked more like a distraction than an actual fight. When he sees Luke is okay and set to escape, he allows himself to be killed knowing it will keep Vader's attention. Don't know if that is what Lucas intended but when you watch all the movies, it certianly comes off that way.

Qui-Gon was supposed to be getting on a bit in Phantom Menace and he kicked all kinds of arse, so it didn't even need the geriatric Count Dooku leaping around like a frog on a hotplate to undermine Lucas' stance of 'Ben's an old man, which is why he can't fight'.

But it works for the film, yeah. It's not a climactic final fight between Ben and Vader, it's Ben distracting Vader so that Luke can escape, and also Ben allowing himself to be 'killed' so that he can become a force ghost.

800 year old Yoda, walks with a cane yet when he bounces like a superball with that lightsaber in his hand. maybe those guys were on Jedi steroids or something.

lol yup. ROTJ remains my favorite of all the Star Wars movies since I was a kid and to this day. For that last epic threefold battle. I usually laugh out loud at those who say X (usually TESB) was great and everything after is crap.

I see the same cheese and corny schlock in all of the movies. Lucas DID model them on the Flash Gordon serials and you ever try watching those? Talk about eye rolling and guffaws. To the extent ANH and TESB different from others, it was despite Lucas' own intentions when he didn't have 100% control of his own destiny and/or let others toss in their 2 cents (Marsha, etc).

Yep, I own all of the Flash Gordon episodes on DVD and have the U.S. and U.K. BDs due to differing extras.

I thought the first third (Jabba) and last third (Luke/Vader/Sidious) of ROTJ are some of the best parts of the series. The middle with the Ewoks was pretty weak though and does drag the movie down quite a bit.

This has always been my problem with the special editions.

So I'm looking into getting this BD set for Christmas and I'm looking to get it as cheap as possible since money is tight. I'm even willing to go the "used" route as long as the set has been well taken care of. Basically just no scratches and no creases in the booklet. I'm a little bit of a collector.

I've looked around on Ebay and Amazon, and the sets are in the upper plateau of my price range, which I'm trying to avoid if possible, so I can snag a few other Blu's if possible.

Any help? Trying to grab it for about $50. $80 just seems like a little much to me considering how many times I've bought these movies in the past, and my 2004 DVD set was only $40 brand new when it came out from Sam's Club.

You're going to spend at least $70 for it new as that's the cheapest it's ever been on Amazon. If you keep an eye on eBay you might find a used one for $50-60 within the next few weeks as I would think some people would sell their copies after Christmas.
