I'm guessing they'll want to release new discs at the same time as the new movie to take advantage of cross-promotion. Hopefully they'll be the theatrical cuts, or both versions in one.

Gonna be hard to wait that long and see but I can do it.

My dream is to see all cuts of all the star wars films on BD.

ORIGNAL TRILOGY

Theatrical release, 1997, 2004, BD

PRE trilogy

Theatrical, DVD, BD

I'm sure it can be done.

Most definitely. I enjoyed many of the scenes, including the ones you mentioned along with seeing the rough cut of the Cantina with the awkwardly edited Han/Greedo confrontation and "Jenny" hanging out with and kissing Han. It was cool to hear the actors' voices before they were dubbed over, like the Cantina owner/bartender speaking with an accent (and not sounding gruff). Lots of good stuff to be found. The Wampa stuff was funny as I expected, and the additional footage with Biggs felt closer to American Graffiti. Loved it.

What a drag -

the menu lingers around just enough to disrupt the scene
- is this an authoring decision that can be changed ?

Adding to my growing list of things I'd like to see changed in the next Star Wars Blu-ray release I guess

That would be pretty cool, actually. I imagine doing the 1997 versions onward could be on a single disc using seamless branching, depending on the source for the various versions.

As far as the prequels? Yeah, I guess you could throw new versions of those in, especially if Phantom Menace got a new, better transfer without that icky layer of DNR. The differences with those films are pretty minimal though, although I really didn't like the expanded footage during the podrace (that scene was long enough to begin with).

Do you really think they would release it to promote Ep VII? That would be a dream come true!

Does anyone when/if the original unaltered trilogy received a digital master? Was it the same time as the Special Edition masters for the 2004 DVD releases?

The 97 Special Editions have different color timings compared to the DVD and Blu-ray releases, so that'd be a negatory.

I have no doubt. Disney will have had two years of Star Wars on the books by then, and now that VII isn't coming out until so late in the year, I'm more sure than ever they will. They need to show some massive profit for their $4B investment. A video re-release will combine with the opening of the film and be their first big year of obvious gains from the ownership of the property.

Even before that, though, it was pretty much a sure thing - there are just too many plusses and few minuses (especially since they can continue to release and re-release in different configurations for each of the upcoming films).

I'm also sure Lucasfilm had the extras package, etc. already lined up for them as part of the sale. It's obvious now, but the already released Blu-ray set, while not "bare bones", certainly was far from exhaustive. At the time, people really didn't want to acknowledge that it wasn't "THE" definitive release of the films, but since then I think many have realized that there was an awful lot that was left out (deleted scenes we know about were not included as extras, and the grand-daddy of them all, the Empire of Dreams doc, were no where to be found, among others).

At this point, it's obvious - Lucas was already prepping to sell, and doing the release he did pumped up profits, proved yet again the relevance of the series and ability to be an evergreen on home video, yet, he left quite a lot off the table that could be used in future box sets for the new owners.

I also have no doubt that the OT will be included in it's original forms in HD. It's their ace in the hole.

No. It's a very, very complicated issue. That said, I have no doubt that Disney is working on them as we speak.

For the whole story of the negative and the various scans, see the link in my signature (and get your coffee out, it's a long read but it is most definitely worth it).

For me, an ultimate OT set would include the unaltered films fully restored, with the ability to branch between original F/X and the improved F/X of the most recent edition.

This would not include any of the extended additions like the Jabba docking bay scene, Vader's shuttle at the end of Empire, or the extended celebration at the end of Jedi, but rather the enhanced F/X where new shots with virtually the same timing and content replaced old shots (like many of the redone clips during the battle of Yavin).

Barring that bit of glorious pie-in-the-sky wishing (if Disney so chooses), I just want the original films as they were with full HD treatments.

It's a shame that we're in 2014 and still talking about this mess. The 1977 movie is one of film's greatest landmark achievements, up there with Jaws, Lawrence of Arabia, Alien, and The Godfather, yet we're still waiting to see it get the full respect it has never completely received.

Agreed, and a mess it is.

If the originals ever do appear, I hope we can get the original color timing which looks notably better than the SE versions which we have on Blu.

That's all on the Blu's????

Man, I guess I gotta go back. I really had a hard time getting through all the menus, so I'm sure I must have missed some of them. While the "fancy" menus are fine and all, I really wish we had an option to just watch all the deleted scenes together from one menu. I kept wondering if there was some back-end menu I couldn't find...I guess I need to go back and take a look.

The scene I most wanted to see isn't there, as far as I can tell - the alternate take of the Leia/Han kiss in their Bespin suite isn't there. Or is it? LOL.

It really is. I put it in my sig because before I was posting it every other page in this thread since it answers a lot of questions and clears up quite a few myths.

I posted it awhile back, but to be honest, the more I see and think about it I have a feeling it's not too far off from what may happen.

Disney has been ALL ABOUT "customized" experiences lately. It's their new thing - they just spent a billion dollars (yes, billion with a B) on a system that involves a "magic band" you wear in their parks - a wrist-worn RFID transmitter - that allows you to use it as your ticket, payment for food/etc., but also lets you schedule FastPasses for rides weeks and months ahead of time, etc. And a lot of their higher-end merch is starting to reflect this - you can get a little statue of you frozen in carbonite, for instance, after a digital scan, etc.

I can totally see, say, in five or ten years, Disney putting up a webpage where you can order your own "custom" Star Wars Blu's - a page full of checkboxes ("Do you want the Ewoks to blink" Yes or No), etc.

Only then would we all get the version of the films we truly want. ;-)

After putting it off for a few months, I'm finally going to watch Star Wars for the first time.

Decided to watch them in release order.

I think that's the best way to do it as an adult first-time viewer.

That's what I'm doing as a first time viewer. Just need to watch Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith and I'll be finished until Episode VII.

Watching Empire on VHS yesterday, I forgot how cool Boba Fett was before he sounded like he belonged in a Mad Max film.
