CG yoda was done by the time of the Bluray release, thats when i first saw it. I did a double take and whipped out my DVD of PM to check and sure enough.

Fair enough.

Looked it up, and footage of CG Yoda in The Phantom Menace was apparently included in the "The Chosen One" featurette on the 2005 DVD release of Revenge of the Sith. Haven't viewed it in years, but that aspect certainly stuck out in my memory. Obviously, though, it wasn't released in the context of the whole film until the Blu-ray release.

That's how it always is on the internet. Small groups can be very vocal and make people think everyone hates a thing that is actually very popular.

That said I hate the prequels so, so much.

If you mean the sets from this past October, just to include DVD copies.

As for sets and models, he always uses ILM (all CG with occasional farm outs to other facilities) and the STAR TREK films had large amounts of digital set extensions. He is more than comfortable with the technology. You can bet there will be just as many blue/green screens on this film as his TREK productions, if not more.
Panavision has created two new cameras for the Star Wars shoot: both are painted flat black and have been given the names "Death Star" and "Millennium Falcon".

I think they may have gotten a better reception if they released Episodes 4, 5 and 6 first... However they probably had an easier time making Episode 1 3D due to all the CGI effects, etc. I can see the originals being hard to "3D-ify", and maybe they thought the demographics favored the prequels (or maybe they were "cheaper" to convert as a test...)
I saw The Phantom Conversion and it was also pretty full. And what surprised me was the diversity of the audience; instead of there being just a few sadsack Star Wars diehards (myself included) there were kids, teenagers, families, old timers, black, white, you name it. Star Wars has endured because it's so popular with every walk of society, and if the new movies are actually good then it'll be bigger than it's ever been IMO.

As for TPM being easier to convert to 3D, they had to do it the hard way because ILM couldn't re-render the CG, so it would've been no different than one of the OT movies. (Incidentally, I think that's why Lucas added that stoopid rock in front of Artoo for the Blu-ray version of Ep IV, as a sop to the eventual 3D-ification. What a dumbass.)

I think I mentioned it before but Phantom Menace in 3D was horrible. I am glad they didn't do the rest if they were all going to look like that. IMAX(or similar large screens) are the only way to watch 3D movies since the screen is so large. Regular screens suck because you see the edge and in a movie like Star Wars, you want to see those ships coming up over top of you. That is the only thing that sucked though - even with the crappy job, I would have gone to see Star Wars in 3D.

I thought the conversion was okay. What annoyed me more was that the sides of the image were literally chopped off when I saw it at the BFI IMAX. Very strange.

That's the thing, though. They DID do the rest of them in 3D, or at least the prequels, and I'm guessing preliminary work on the originals. AOTC 3D and ROTS 3D are supposedly finished or near finished, and they even previewed a segment at a convention a while back (can't remember which; I'm guessing Celebration, but maybe Comic-Con). Disney merely scrapped the release.

I'm sure they had their reasons, but since I don't know what those reasons were, I'm still not a fan of the decision. They had AOTC and ROTS set to go, basically back-to-back, in the summer/fall of 2013. They could've released ANH and TESB in 2014, and ROTJ in the first half of 2015, perfectly setting the stage for VII in late 2015. I'm guessing it was a decision based on resources, but I always find that excuse hard to believe when it involves a company as large as Disney, or one owned by them.

Or a property such as Star Wars, which very well could have paid their investment back on just RE-releases in 3D and a blu-ray of the original three in their unedited unlucased forms.

I'm actually watching a New Hope on blu-ray now. Damn. It looks INCREDIBLE, and the sound is great too. I forgot how much I loved this film. Special edition is annoying as hell with all the cgi crap though. My fiancé has never actually seen these versions of the film so she's going nuts right now.

Has anybody read anything that possibly indicates a Star Wars Day sale price on The Complete Saga? That would be sweet.

What kind of price are you looking for? I personally have not seen the set for less than $60.

I'm hoping for that as well. The cheapest I've seen it is the above mentioned $60. BJs has it for $69.99 which is the cheapest non sale price that I've seen in stores. I'm mostly interested in the bonus discs but even $60 is pretty steep for that stuff.

It's not a bad price for the three bonus discs at $70 when the trilogy sets are going for $34 right now. So you're basically getting the 3 bonus discs for $2.
