It was the main issue with the SE's to begin with, aside from the true revisionism (Greedo shooting first, etc.) - tech just wasn't ready to do what he was trying to do. A few years later, with the '04 cuts, tech was better - but then he was constrained by the '97 decisions - basically putting lipstick on a Hutt.

The whole Han stepping on him thing - now, that could be totally eliminated. Put Jabba on a floating dias, take that comic bit out, and animate him like he's ROTJ Jabba, and it could be a neat scene.
For the scene to truly work for me I'd like to see much more creativity and effort put forth. The repeated Greedo scene dialogue for one has to be cut or somehow altered. I know the dialogue repetition is a bi-product of editing done during original production but it still stands out as odd.

Also, I'd swap the entire locale/ background so the millennium falcon isn't in the background, maybe just place the scene in another part of Mos Eisley. The reason why is showing the Falcon casually in the background blows the true big reveal in the next scene as well as the grand musical cue that plays. I'd also get rid of Greedo and the generic background henchmen and maybe throw in some Gammorren Guards or Bib Fortuna to really give Jabba a vintage ROTJ feel.

Lastly, as you suggested I'd give Jabba one more thorough CGI make over (really make him look like the ROTJ puppet) and put him on a floating dias as you suggest.

A ton of work - I know - but THAT would make the scene awesome imo.

I'd fix two things...eliminate Boba Fett at the end looking straight into the camera. During the Jabba/Han sequence, cut away TO Boba Fett when Han has to make that terrible "tail step" thing.

Just get rid the Jabba scene entirely. The whole reason the Greedo scene exists is to convey the exact same information as the Jabba scene and serve as coverage in case the latter didn't work out technically. They're redundant but you can't cut Greedo's confrontation with Han because it's one of the film's iconic scenes. In comparison the Jabba scene isn't, and because of the physical and visual restrictions from the live action shoot it's just never going to work right without looking awkward no matter how many times they try to fix it. In the end it's just a 1995 tech demo they shoehorned into the movie.

No. In every single adaption at the time: comics, novel, etc. both scenes were in there and Jabba always asks "Why did you have to fry poor Greedo like that?". Both scenes were always meant to be in the movie. One establishes Han as a badass, the other who he owes his debt.

Personally, I read the novel before the movie came out and was confused why it wasn't in there.

I can see that....but, of course, adaptations to a movie are/can be different and I don't think the Jabba scene helped the overall pacing of the sequence. In addition, I think Jabba having been a mystery up until Jedi was something that worked - we finally got to see who or what this Jabba was in Jedi.

I like the scene more for how cool it could potentially be if it was given a little more attention. I do think there's a place for it in the film proper - it just needed more work to truly make it fit in. As is, I just sorta accept it for what it is, flaws and all.

Yeah Boba looking at the cam is cheesy as heck. I don't mind him being present but no need for him to mug at the camera.

That said, the argument that the whole scene can just be cut works too. For years the scene wasn't there in any form and the trilogy still held up fine and Jabba was simply saved until ROTJ.

Was Boba Fett in the scene when it was originally filmed?

Actually their not. The 'Special Collection' Japanese Laserdiscs which were transfers made prior to the revamped THX masters seen on the non-anamorphic DVDs which themselves were direct ports of the 1993 Definitive edition Laserdisc, are the best looking versions of the theatrical cuts available on disc IMO.

Here are more examples. Japanese Special Collection (TOP) transfer looks better.

The red tint for skin tones are especially annoying on the Definitive edition Laserdisc/non-anamorphic DVD.

No, he was inserted into the footage for the SE. IIRC, a random ILM employee wore the costume.

Boba Fett didn't conceptually exist until something like 1978 or 1979.

Brighter and washed out in comparison is better looking?

Bottom pictures looks better to my untrained eye. The green tint is annoying in the top pics.

I'm probably the only person who has never really seen the original trilogy (only bits and pieces), but I'd like to eventually. My older brother's a mega-fan and owns the films on VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray and pretty much every collectable imaginable. I've only seen The Phantom Menace (which I owned on VHS) and Attack of the Clones (which I saw in the theater), and thought both were very boring and hard to understand (and took themselves too seriously), but I've of course heard the originals are much, much better. I'd prefer to watch them in their original theatrical editions though. Has there been ANY work on an unedited Blu-ray release at all? I don't have TOO much of a problem with some changes made (and certainly wouldn't harp on anyone for preferring/enjoying them), but there really should have been a choice between the original and revised versions. I personally don't like it when there are more than one version of a film (different cuts, etc), and usually just prefer to watch a film as it was originally exhibited.

It's very close to the original theatrical color timing.

Unless you remember 1977 like yesterday you can't go by the color of prints. Unless protected and archived they do change over time.

I actually like the 1997 SE LD (which I still have) color & gamma values.

Same here. Until now, anyway. Next time I watch them it will probably be the "despecialized" edition.
