As much as I prefer the originals, I just cannot tolerate the poor picture quality of those non-anamorphic DVDs. I mean they are just awful if watching them on anything more than a 20" monitor. I rather suffer through the Blus to watch these, but to each his own. I would probably just go the Harmy route, but I have no idea how people access those.

i would loved to see orignal saga's star wars a new hope empire strikes back return of the jedi

yes i got 97 vhs of them and the limited edtion 2 disc dvds special edtion and orignal unaltered<-not very good to watch hd tv

i think reason why i always enjoy return of the jedi as oppose to empire strikes back because i remember seeing jedi the orignal version at the theater

as far as the presequels goes they don't bother me very much the special edtion i think was best empire strikes back

so if there was going to be a new boxset that will have unaltered orignal 4-6 bluray i'll be all over it

on a side note it still gets me when i got screwed over buying used star wars complete saga used for 89.99 sam goody last year on jan 21st

apprently i didn't know one disc was missing while i was going movie marathon after i got done with phatom of the meance i discovered another copy attack of the clones no a new hope disc at least i had empire strikes back and return of the jedi discs intact plus threw away recipt

now don't get me wrong attack of the clones was ok but not for a duplicate that is

so in the end i had to buy star wars orignal trilogy bluray set 43.86 walmart oh idiot i was just to replace a new hope bluray disc put it in digibook throw away 2nd dupicate attack of the clones bluray disc didn't really need extra copy empire strikes back and return of the jedi blurays btw

i was so mad that day i learned my lesson big time keep receipt if something goes wrong on a bluray package like star wars for an example double check or get screwed that's what i get being a cheap ass buying digibook used for 89.99 and 1 disc missing

Do we have actual confirmed proof of a release of the unaltered trilogy besides a wink wink comment from one person? People say things in interviews that never come to fruition and people say things they can't possibly guarantee in interviews.

Until Fox confirms that they've made a deal with Disney and are going to release the unaltered original trilogy I just can't get my hopes up.

Well, the company that mastered the originals had an employee's resume of work posted that stated she worked on original Star Wars 4K restoration or something of those words. It was quickly pulled along with images from the original movies, so it appears some work has been done. It seems logical to assume something will be released in addition to other rumors.

From what has been told, Fox has no say about any of it - they will just merely distribute the discs while Lucasfilm (Disney) decides whats on the discs - if these come about.

What I read and heard back when the sale became public was that Fox owned Episode 4 through the end of the decade. The other 5 belonged to Lucas and Fox just distributed them. ANH was a full Fox production and their property. If true that would give them some say over it at least. I have no doubt that they would cooperate tho. It's in Fox's best interest to release the unaltered editions on 4K next Christmas when 4K discs first come out. What better way to promote the new 4k discs than with the unaltered star wars trilogy.

If this release is in fact coming then do y'all think we will get an announcement and footage at Comic-Con or some other venue?

As I've understood it, Fox ONLY handles distribution.
Those distribution rights for V/VI will resort back to LucasFilm(Disney) in 2020. The distribution rights to IV are own by Fox in perpetuity.
My guess, Disney will wait to see how VII does. If it's a smash hit(to include HV/toys/etc) they might want to cut a deal w/Fox sooner rather than waiting another 5 years when they would outright own everything(including distribution) of all the episodes, except IV.

The topic has been discussed a lot and the consensus is Fox just has distribution of Ep 4, but even if they have 100% control I don't see it being an issue either for it to be released as the original.

I would think given the San Diego Comic-Con is in July, this announcement timing would be perfect if these were to be released just before the new movie which comes out in December. We probably would even hear of rumors before the Comic-Con

While not officially confirmed, it seems that Fox traded ownership of IV in exchange for distribution rights to the prequels. The evidence is the copyright on the film, which is now attributed to Lucasfilm instead of Fox. As such, there is no deal to cut. Disney will release them, and Fox will distribute them.

The unaltered trilogy hasn't been confirmed either, but it has ben restored in 4k (showing that it can't be the 2k created special editions). Everything else is specuation, but it seems logical that Disney will use them to profit from their new property. My money is on a limited theatrical rerelease leading up to VII followed by a BD release.

Yeah, we've posted it about 100 times in this thread - which I don't blame folks for not being able to read all of at this point - but no matter how many times we say it, and present the evidence, it's Star Wars - so that mysterious Force that makes folks ignore all logic, reason, and anything contrary to what they previously believed simply does not allow it to compute.

Even on things that we have de facto evidence of (in the form of published documents from Lucasfilm archives) - like the fact that Lucas was present for only a small portion of the live action filming of ESB - because someone read something in 1980 that claimed otherwise and has held it in their hands as gospel since, refusing to believe that Uncle George ever created (and re-created, and re-re-created) the narrative around the making of these films so many times he gets confused at this point.

Honestly, Star Wars will be his great masterpiece, but the mystique he produced around the creation of the films by his widely differing and often times contradictory narrative surrounding them is a very close second for astounding mythical creations.

There are only about two or three rides in the amusement park that is this thread, and we ride all of them over and over and over and over again, never tiring.

If we ever do get the unaltered theatrical versions released on Blu doesn't that mean certain issues which were fixed in the SE will be back again? Meaning we'll clearly see old matte lines and matte boxes and the Emperors slugs for example?

Not complaining about this possibility (the OT is what it is), just saying.

Depends, really. I would be fine with matte lines and such being removed as part of the restoration, but there is also an argument to be made for keeping them.

Good I love matte lines! I love it the way they were filmed flaws and all...just like any film. Star Wars is not above any other classic film when it comes to flaws. Give me 1977, 80 and 83 any day of the week!

You have the Star Wars cons in May, I figure that's when you'll hear something, along with a new trailer in front of Avengers 2. If not, then D23 in August at the very latest.

I can't speak for how LucasFilm will handle it -- I just know Disney has been quietly fixing errors in their classic films for years. What they do is preserve the original negs, then during mastering, they go in with digital tools and fix things they couldn't (or wouldn't) during production of the films decades ago. So, sure, LucasFilm could preserve the original negs and the sections removed for the SE back in 1997, put it all back together digitally, and then use some tools to fix some stuff like the Emperor's slug.

I wouldn't mind if Disney had all of the visual effects shots re-compostioned digitally, it would help improve the quality I think. I remember reading that this was actually was done when the 1997 Special Edition Versions were created.

I wonder though, if Disney did put out the theatrical versions but they quietly did stuff like clean up mattes and black issues relating to the slugs would there be any backlash?

Could some OT fans consider such a release with minor clean-ups just another slightly less tampered with SE? Or is some minor clean-up and tweaks seen as a reasonable thing in this case?

I can only speak for myself, but I would be beyond ecstatic for such a release. My biggest gripe with the SE is definitely the content change more than the updated effects.(That doesn't include the atrocious Mos Isley scene.)
