So the reports they're citing are flimsy to the extreme and the reports you're (sort of) citing are every bit as credible?

Cool.

I don't know who owns what except that I don't own the versions that I want.

I saw your hilarious armchair copyright debate with your screenshots earlier. A couple of you guys definitely had yourselves convinced. You had a nice little consensus going. Too bad it wasn't correct.

I've been in the mood to watch Ep 4-6 lately, but don't like the Blus.

Cool.

Hollywood Reporter reporter it as fact when Disney bought LucasFilm. Several others report the same thing. It only takes light Googlin' to support my claim.

That's the difference between what I'm saying and the what you're saying. You guys have literally nothing.

And I love all the facepalms considering that the facts are on my side.

Sure hope May the 4th gets here before we know it. It sure would be nice to see an announcement of new Blu-rays. That would be so much better than all this speculation.

Is this the article to which my light Googlin' should lead me?

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...-tie-up-384541

But Fox owns distribution rights to the original Star Wars, No. 4 in the series, in perpetuity in all media worldwide.

No mention in that article of Fox owning the film itself.

Not at all. What exactly can Disney do with Star Wars if Fox owns the rights to screen it in theaters or release it on video?

Lemme ask you a serious question...
Why would Disney pay, what was it? 4 Billion Dollars? for the Star Wars Saga if they couldn't own all of it?

Easy.. Because its worth 4 billion for a the merchandising rights alone. Then you have future films. All of LucasFilm's resources like ILM and Skywalker Sound.

Lemme ask you an even serious-er question: why would Disney pass on a $4 billion deal because they can't release a single catalog title without dealing with Fox?

The rights that Fox has locked up tight are nothing compared to the stuff that Disney got free and clear.

And also: Marvel has all sorts of conflicting corporate entanglements with its properties and yet Disney still went ahead with that deal.

The biggest roadblock to the unaltered trilogy still might be Lucas. I am not sure still whether or not either studio would alienate him like that....since he doesn't want the UOT out there. I mean I don't think any studio is going to piss off a big director....and he still is a "creative consultant" or whatever name they gave him.

To be honest, I've gotten the impression lately that he doesn't really give a shit about star wars anymore. If they were to approach him and let him know they're restoring it (and again, this might have already happened) his response could very well have been, "Eh, whatever."

ANYTHING THEY WANT! Because when LucasFilm wants to release the movie, either theatrically or on home video, Fox HAS TO DO IT! And they're HAPPY TO! Because they get a fee and a percentage! But they CAN'T STOP LucasFilm from releasing the movies NOR CAN THEY RELEASE THEM ON THEIR OWN! THEY JUST DISTRIBUTE WHEN LUCASFILM TELLS THEM TO!!!!

I've brought this up before. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen because these approval rights Disney has don't give them the rights to sit on something Fox owns just to keep them from using it. If that wound up in court and Fox proved to a judge or jury that Disney was dicking them around they'd likely side with Fox.

Courts eat that stuff up. There's a lot of room for abuse in most contracts and all bets are off when you go into a courtroom, and if Fox financed a movie 40 years ago and gave Lucas a great deal of control a couple years later and that control was absorbed by another companies decades later and that company basically did anything that was demonstrably not done in good faith then Disney could find the whole thing blowing up in their face.

That's why this whole debate is so nonsensical. Yes Fox controls the original film by all credible accounts. Yes Disney paid $4 billion for an incomplete franchise, but there's nothing to suggest that Fox or Disney are scheming to sabotage what the other controls.
