What a let down. I hope we hear something about the OT at the coming SW convention in April.

Yeah, don't see that. It'll be all about THE FORCE AWAKENS and what Disney has planned for the property in the future.

Maybe when Episode IX is finished, they may decide then it the proper time but again, how long have fans been waiting on the theatrical cuts?

My non-anamorphic discs are enough. I never watch them anyway. They are a curiosity, no more.

We're pushing 20 years, right?
When Lucasfilm was owned by George Lucas, but it's owned by Disney now. I bet by the end of the year, to tie-in with the new movie, we will see it released.

You know you are right. Highly confidential Star Wars news currently leaks at an alarming rate. The lucasfilm headquarters has more holes than a kitchen sieve. If the UOT was coming, we would have got something concrete by now. To date, just fan speculation and websites running stories for click throughs. Time to wake up folks, nothing to see here. Move along.

Also, the current vudu situation shows that if a retailer had news, it would have 'accidentally' come out by now, forcing a statement from lucasfilm. It hasn't, because it isn't.

The big announcement at celebration will be Star Wars land at the park they are hosting it at, Hollywood studios florida.

The UOT is NOT news for the vast majority of earth.

I think 4K enthusiasts actually want the UOT versions on Blu-ray if they restored the films. The purpose of a 4K restoration is to digitally recreate what it looked like on film when it was originally shown in theaters.

George Lucas apologists/Star Wars revisionists will be happy with their inferior 2011 Blu-rays.

Does anyone in this forum actually prefer the 4K restoration to be based on the 2011 cuts?

Isn't 4k the last roll of the dice for physical media? When Star Wars gets released on digital download, it says to me that physical media will be gone as the lead purchasing format in the next few years. Lucasfilm is always late to the party to ensure widespread adoption has taken place. 4k has no momentum, prices are collapsing and most new releases ignore the format. If and when they release the 4k masters, they will be the 2011 cuts as they will want to spend zero on putting them out. Sad, but you know it will be the case.

The one vain hope is that disney looks to the preservation aspect and puts some of the immense profit the new films and merchandise will generate to do the right thing and restore the originals. Will they release them though, we will have to wait a lot longer to see. I hope I am wrong, and will be the first to say so.

Yep.

Also, if anything is thinking of getting these but waiting for the price to drop, good luck with that. Five out of the six say LUCASFILM as the studio, meaning Disney. Disney's not dropping prices on anything. Just look how much they charge for the damn Marvel Cinematic Universe films that didn't distribute in the beginning.

This is the only way it'll happen. It was never about they're not available for Lucas. It was all about he didn't want to spend money of cuts he felt inferior.

When Disney starts raking in massive profits from the new films and more specifically the merch, they may go to Lucas and say they'll front the bill for the restoration/remaster of the theatrical cuts for all six films. But knowing Lucas, that'll be a long negotiation, even if he's not paying the bill on the project.

They would only go to lucas out of courtesy. Don't forget, $4 billion should have bought them absolutely everything including the spliced original negatives. It is up to disney as to how and why, there is no negotiation to be had, personal loyalty is the only obstacle in my opinion.

Heavy promotion and excitement about inferior versions of films bums me out. OMG OWN IT ON DIGITAL SO IT LOOKS WORSE WOOHOO. And yet the majority want this. Ugh.

Question is when to give up the hope for the uncut originals, after their celebration thing, after December BD announcements or after the next movie comes out on BD?

Agreed. And I think that ends when he passes...unless his children make a big stink about it and sue...

Not that I really like Phantom Menace anyway, but I definitely thought the DVD version onwards was just a little bit worse-- I didn't like that they extended the pod race sequence, which I thought made the scene run on too long with a bunch of unnecessary "racer intros."

I'm much more doubtful about Episode II though. I guess they could put out the original digital version and maybe restore the original color-timing, but what about the earlier version that was cut for film prints? Would they even have access to that version to release? And would it even be worth the effort if they could?

For the record I like the Blu-Ray version of Episode II. As far as I know the only change is adding additional dialog with Shmi Skywalker during Anakin's nightmare, which I felt DRASTICALLY improved that scene and stopped it from being unintentionally funny.
There were other alterations to the Blu-ray of Clones, Lucas fiddled with the editing of a couple of scenes which ****s with the music (it fades in and out around the edits) and is one final FU to John Williams on a film where he got badly disrespected by Lucas and his lapdog Burtt. Yeah, the addition to Anakin's nightmare is good, but it's always the way with these ****ing changes: one step forward, two steps back. http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=929191 The movie's easily my least favourite prequel anyway, but I don't want it getting any worse!

I wouldn't want the film edition either, they had to lock the print for distribution but they carried on making changes to the digital version before release. You want to hear unintentionally funny, Padme's original reply to the trooper when she falls from the gunship was terrible, when asked if she's alright she comes out with this weird, almost synthesised-sounding "YEAZ", instead of the more natural "uh-huh". And I like the hand holding at the end, the film version didn't have that.

I am surprised, but not surprised at all, regarding the cost of these digital copies that are coming out. $20 a film is a bit steep in my opinion. Of course, I am old fashioned and want my movies on physical media. I guess I would not mind "buying" downloads if I could actually back it up by burning it to blu-ray. My opinion is that downloads are more for the studio and casual film watcher than for the true collector.

I will certainly be reading about these releases just to find out which cut is getting released. The crazy thing is that in the back of my mind, I keep thinking that Lucas was only willing to sell to Disney if they promised to only release a new cut of each episode for each new release.
I hope that I am just kidding about that. But, I am going to be careful with future Star Wars purchases. I certainly want the original theatrical trilogy released in HD unmolested. Hell, I even liked the original theatrical Special Editions. But, there were a few changes on the blu-ray box set (and before) that just made me realize that I won`t keep re-buying these films.

Cant wait for Episode VII though.

Funny how an article from 2012 is out of date, but most of you in here cling to a film released in 1977 that most of you never saw as you were too young.

I have contributed to this thread since it started, the contributions become less and less as who wants to get involved in the pointless back and forth sabre swinging that people like you try to provoke.

Lurking as you call it and not bothering to get involved in pointless, unsubstantiated arguing, is not high on my bucket list.

Never.

Eventually there will be a new master and proper release of the original films. Has to be.

There will also, eventually, be a proper modern HD release of They Shoot Horses, Don't They?

When I get upset about Star Wars, I think about that much greater film, in the same situation.

Or Last Summer, which hasn't had a video release since early VHS.

Or Play it As it Lays, which has never been released on video but is available via bootlegs.

Or Believe in Me or Keep Off My Grass, which as far as I've been able to tell are essentially unavailable.

Of all these situations, the most likely to be done justice to is Star Wars.
