It might, someday, but I would guess with these digital versions coming out now a new box set this year is off the table.

My take is that it's more of GL giving a giant middle-finger to those who didn't like the prequels by sticking it to OT fans one last time.
I can refute that easily because Lucas has basically said why he changed it to Christensen but I'm not going to at the moment. It's too long of an explanation. It has everything to do with Lucas' interpretation of the Force.

And the bold...just stupid. That has seriously nothing to do with it. Nothing.

Embarrassing that someone without much resources and money like Lowry can make a better looking image.
The HD Despecialised Edition uses the Blu-rays as the source wherever possible, hence the eye-searing colour, contrast etc. And I'm all for a bit of screenshot science, but how 'bout we wait until the actual Lowry masters are released instead of sticking the boot in over a bunch of shots in a sizzle reel?

As for the Bologna boys, they're not perfect. I've hated the colour/gamma of most of their recent remasters, and the heck of it is the Lowry Star Wars grab above looks uncannily like something they'd put out, yet here's it's being destroyed just because it's Lowry. Heh. After being bowled over by various recent Lowry remasters, I've got every faith that they'll come good with Star Wars second time around*.

Actually, I now believe no Star Wars BD (other than Ep IV/ANH) will come with digital codes before 2020, unless there's some unannounced moves by Disney & Fox.

The reason is not ANH; Fox clearly owns all rights to that film, and this release confirms that. The problem is split rights to the other films (ESB, ROTJ and the PT): While Disney now has digital rights to those films, there is NO indication for now of Fox releasing its physical rights to those films before 2020. (If that were in the works, why aren't the existing OT, PT & Complete Saga BD sets on moratorium?)

Assuming Fox still has full control of all OT & PT BDs until 2020, it would be easy for them to throw in a UV slip for ANH; but I do not see them including DMA slips for the others. Maybe other changes are coming -- especially if the UOT rumors are true -- but if not I doubt we'll see a full set with digital codes till 2020, when Disney will fully own eight of the nine films; Fox would then likely either sell ANH to Disney, or at least license it for the super-duper Complete Saga set.

with the way technology is advancing, there will be so much cgi and touch ups done to the originals they wont even look like they were filmed in the 70s and 80's. 50 years from now before I kick the bucket, the latest box sets will have new actors super imposed into the original star wars, and all new space ships etc etc. shit they might even put jajabing into a new hope as lukes house pet!

so I am predicting star wars 7 will gross 600 - 700 million worldwide at the cinema, then another 300 million from cable, ppv, blu ray, and tv,
dont have a clue about merchandise, but it will be hundreds of millions.
disney is gonna make some serious money from the next 3 movies.

and they still want to fleece us for digital copies! LOL

See, for him, it's not about the generation that loved and worshiped these films. It's about the generation(s) after that will see the Saga as I-VI, not as separate trilogies, hence the changes. Not to mention, if you've read any books on the guy, he's a serious perfectionist. The original trilogy has never matched what he had in his mind's eye. Having said that, I do think he knows when he's gone to far, when the integrity of the films is destroyed, which in my opinion, he's never even remotely crossed that line. The fanbase would probably disagree but I don't think he has.

It's not really hard to see his logic.
I honestly can't agree with the bolded part.
He didn't go all out to do the SE. He just tinkered with them, first to test if the things he had in mind for the prequels could be done in an affordable fashion, and then to match the OT to the PT a bit better, but he never really fixed all the issues...far from it.
That's my criticism of him.
He should have gone all the way IMO.
Either way, fans complain.

It'll clear $1.25 billion. Easy. The only real question is if it'll surpass Avatar.

Yeah I think personally this will do 5-600 million opening weekend at least. Maybe more.

I also think it will be the third movie ever to open over 200 million in the US.

I believe Disney/Buena Vista will smash the studio box office record with what they have in the pipeline for 2016:

A good chunk of the Star Wars box office will roll into 2016 with the late in the year release.
Jungle Book - Iffy
Captain America - Cash cow
Alice in Wonderland
Finding Dory
Pete's Dragon - Iffy
Star Wars: Rouge One

If not 2016, then 2017...

Rouge One left overs
Beauty and the Beast
Star Wars VIII
Pirates 5
Toy Story 4

I can see $1.6 billion worldwide but no way does it get above $2 billion for James Cameron to have to start worrying.

I don't think it will, either. But I think #3 is a lock (well, depending on what Age of Ultron does). The only reason I think it has a slight chance to catch Avatar is that it's a December release, which will allow it to play in theaters longer than if it was a summer release.

Which is totally the wrong attitude for somebody to have if they happen to be the steward of one of the biggest and most beloved franchises in entertainment history.

I don't get it. How is adding rocks in front of R2 or making Greedo shoot first or shoehorning in CGI additions that already look more dated than the original effects going to help future generations appreciate the Saga more?

His logic? Look man, maybe this is just where you and I differ, but I don't care how much of a perfectionist somebody might be (and if he truly was one by the way, he would fix the things that arguably do need fixing rather than just making nonsensical changes here and there), I just can't see the logic in somebody who thinks that creating an alternate version of your film that pleases you more means you can't also properly restore and release the original version that means so much to so many people.

If it really bothers him that much to have the original properly released alongside his preferred version, then that's his damn problem, it shouldn't have to be ours as well.

But then again, I guess all this is pretty much irrelevant now since he's no longer calling the shots anymore.
