Alice in Wonderland

Rouge One left overs
Beauty and the Beast
Star Wars VIII
Pirates 5
Toy Story 4
Yeah, but will they beat 2015's take from Big Hero 6 leftovers, Cinderella, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Inside Out, Ant-Man, and the openings of The Force Awakens & The Good Dinosaur? But then the Force seems to be strong with this Darth Iger; even his flops are massive (Mars Needs Moms, The Lone Ranger, John Carter).

I would be absolutely shocked if they immediately follow the digital release with a new BD release. They would literally be taking a huge dump on the people who just bought the digital release. Not gonna happen.

Soonest possible BD re-release would be next year with Force Awakens, but I think even that is unlikely. Probably wait for a UBD set down the line.

Ah, corporate synergy at its finest. No wonder I just read about a "Galactic Gathering" promo at Disney World with swag featuring all sorts of Disney characters role-playing Star Wars, from Huey, Dewey & Louie right up to Mickey Mouse as Luke. Thankfully, no one can replace Darth Vader -- unless that's Darth Iger himself under the mask.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the digital release are the SE (which are already out on Blu-ray), not the OOT.

You're absolutely right. Not sure what that has to do with what I said though.

I agree somewhat, but only because Fox still has physical rights to the complete OT & PT till 2020 (edit: and will NOT want to put out DMA slips for the titles other than ANH). OTOH, the UOT really wouldn't be affected by this; IMO most fans will either buy both anyway, or skip this one because it's not the UOT.

Big advertising for the pre-order of Star Wars in digital HD these days. The problem however is that how the hell do they expect to destroy physical media by charging substantially more money for inferior quality?

Good old marketing. Never ceases to amaze me.

I just don't see how releasing the digital versions of the Special Editions would create problem with releasing the OOT on Blu-ray. I mean we get double dipped all the time.

Edit: you're probably right on the timing of the release being next year though

It's not quality; it's convenience. Same way convenience stores get away charging three times more for groceries than your typical Walmart Supercenter. (Edit: Or how iTunes beat the CD, or how Spotify is beating iTunes.)

iTunes had the advantage of offering every track separately though. We can't buy three chapters of a movie as far as I'm aware. Also, a lot of digital movie content is cheaper than blu-ray on release date. Star Wars on bd was never even close to $125 Canadian.

It's about timing, the celebration thing is going to be within weeks of the digital release. I do not see them doing a digital release rollout with a lot of press and whatnot and then announcing different BD editions a week or two later. I think any marketing consultant or executive would laugh at the idea of doing that.

Doing it next years seems suspect to me because it will be in the middle of the new movie era and UBD will be just starting up and they'll want to wait and see how that does.

Not trying to be cynical, I would love a simple original trilogy release to come out as a companion to the existing set, or even an all new deluxe set, I just don't see it happening for a while.

It's all in how you define "convenience", young grasshopper. As in having extra milk & eggs close to home, or buying only the good tracks off the album, or having the movie ready to instantly stream to a phone or tablet to keep the kids quiet in the back seat.

Maybe true for the existing OT & PT (though I suspect Fox will want plenty of BDs, old or new, in stores to go with Ep VII's BD release), but the UOT is something different altogether. That's for the fans; it would only make sense to announce it during a fan convention.

It would be nice if they would at least make some type of announcement during the convention, such as what their position is on the UOT now that George is no longer running the show, or whether we could expect a release anytime in the future. I wish they would at the very least tell us something already.

Since Disney is a public company shouldn't there be information available what they got exactly for their 4 billion, or at least for their investors?

I don't know, the digital release seems strictly for a different market that doesn't go out and buy Blu-Ray sets. I mean, we're talking about the same exact editions that you've been able to buy on Blu-Ray since 2012. You can buy them right now for LESS than what the new digital versions are going for.

The people buying these to watch Star Wars on their Xbox or Ipad or whatever clearly don't care about what's released on Blu-Ray, or they'd own the Complete Saga set or one of the trilogy sets. So I doubt they'd care about an announcement of a new Blu-Ray set.

If you read comments on various sites, a ton of people are already complaining about the digital versions: too expensive, not the UOT, they should have been included with the Blu-Ray purchase, etc. So somebody's going to feel like Lucasfilm "took a dump on them" pretty much no matter what.

No secret...Disney got LucasFilm for $2 billion in cash, LucasFilm got $2 billion in stock in the Walt Disney Company. $4 billion total sale.

As for releasing the original theatrical trilogy on blu ray…

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a video of someone interviewing a Disney exec. and they asked about the possibility of doing it, and the exec. was like "it would be a great idea." ???

I remember that there was a link posted to the clip, but I couldn't get it to load. Am I confusing this with something else?

Not the unaltered films, just re-issues, and it was Bob Iger who grinned from ear to ear. We've only started the year of Star Wars. Buckle up.
