Even at its worst this thread is still better than the Prequels.

I'm a long time fan of the UOT making my way through the "blu-ray editions" for the first time. I know much has been said about the DNR and frozen grain on these original trilogy releases, but one thing that's surprised me about Return of the Jedi is how unstable the image is. I'm actually quite distracted by it. It's the tell-tale rotational wobble of an unstable anamorphic element, and it's extremely noticeable throughout the flick. Can't believe they wouldn't have fixed this. Anyone else seeing it? I did a Google search and came up with nothing; no one on the internet machine seems to be talking about this weird anamorphic instability. All you gotta do is call up ANY wide shot in the movie (preferably with strong vertical lines, like the Emperor's throne room) and you'll see it. But on the other hand, you might not want to, 'cuz you can never un-see it.

Unstable would be one word for it I guess, but I remember a few really soft flat looking scenes in ROTJ that were very inconsistent with the rest of the film. It was borderline VHS level at times which I'm assuming had something to do with the film elements.

At the same time, though he thinks the films are bad overall, he's willing to point out what Lucas got right with them, such as in the video below:

Nostalgia Critic: Top 11 GOOD Things from the Star Wars Prequels

And that is just it. The prequels are bad movies, but they are still entertaining ones and the points Doug made (I saw this when he first posted it) are good ones. Jeremy Jahns also made good points in his reviews of them.

Anyway, any more rumors on the original versions coming to BD?

Not sure that that should be seen by anyone.

WOW! The drugs back then must have been amazing.

I only ever made it through part of the way on the SW Holiday Special before I stopped watching and promised myself that I would finish it later. Well, that has been a few years ago now....

After re-watching the 2011 version of "Return of the Jedi" tonight, I've warmed up to the updates more (except for the song/dance number in Jabba's palace and the Hayden Christiansen force ghost). Vader's added "no" at the end would work better if it was just once, not twice. The second "no" doesn't quite work (maybe I'll change my mind someday?).

Not usually a fan of Nostalgia Critic but that was a decent video. The prequels definitely have good in them, and I still think Lucas' overall visual style is great. Even if those movies weren't called Star Wars I have a feeling they would still be remembered and debated today. There's a lot that's super entertaining in them, it's just hard to see past the flaws and horrible writing.

The what now? Shirley it's just a bit of telecine judder? Or is that what you mean? [edit] Nope, I see what you mean! It's seems to be the bottom half of the frame that twitches more than the rest of it, it's like it's belly dancing or something. Yowch. Add that to the list of reasons why these films badly need a new transfer. If it's baked in to the source (could the element have warped?) then they can stabilise it digitally.

I actually don't mind the first 'noooo' because it's like a low growl, but that second one...damn. It's like they've got Bobby Boucher under the helmet. I can't stand the 2011 version of Jedi.

What's awesome about the Holiday Special is even during Mark Hamill's recent celebration panel he mentioned it was embarrassing.

It appears to be there throughout the whole film, it's like ye olde telecine judder BUT it seems to affect the bottom half of the frame more than the top, it's really weird. If it's there on older transfers (gonna check the UOT DVD later) then that would point to it being an issue with the film elements themselves.

[edit] or by "elements" steel_breeze was talking about a problem with the anamorphic lenses themselves? I think they used glass from Joe Dunton rather than Panavision optics on Jedi.

Call me crazy but I actually like the two no's. I actually agree with Lucas that it adds more drama to the scene, which scares the hell out of me.

That dance number though... jesus.
