It's not an issue on the same level, clearly, as "Jedi Rocks", but am I the only one who also misses the original Ewok celebration music at the end of RotJ?

Nah, I miss it also I do like the new ending, but the nostalgia in me likes "Yub Nub".

The SEs in general are a mixed bag for me. For every change I like (Biggs/Luke scene in ANH, Windows in Cloud City, for example), there is a change I hate (Greedo shooting first, and Jedi Rocks). I feel that there is a good 'final cut' in there somewhere if Disney can swing it.

Ugh. I know there's no accounting for taste and all that, but I just don't see how anybody could prefer that over the original scene.

Something I found interesting though is that in this scene from one of the awesome new Star Wars comics (which are canon by the way) you can see Sy Snootles in the background and she looks much more like the original puppet rather than the CGI version seen in the above clip. I don't know if it actually means anything, but I certainly found it curious:

What do you guys think of the odds of Darth Vader re-appearing in one of the upcoming Star Wars movies? I'm thinking somehow he re-appears - he's just too iconic not to be seen again in some sort of role - especially in one of the prequels (maybe Rogue One)?

Of course they'll pull some excuse to put him in there. Revenge of the Sith proved that he only needs to be in the movie for three seconds to justify making 17 action figures and putting his face on boxes of cereal.

Sorry if I sound cynical, but this is what Star Wars is these days. The movies are just promos for the merch. Though to be fair, I'm sure Abrams will do a far better job than Lucas did with the last three. It should be an enjoyable exercise in consumerism rather than a depressing and embarrassing one.

All the SW content currently being created by the Lucasfilm story group is already way better than the last 3 movies Lucas gave us.

Yahaha, it's so so bad that it's awesome. How did Lucas see that hot pile and decide to actually use it? Wahahaha, it's the best.

Part of the reason Lucas has been so unwilling to put the original cuts out there is he knows that nobody would want his versions.

Of course, Disney can now probably do it if they want, which gives some hope for the future.
I'll be one of the few dissenters on the Special Edition of Aliens. Other than the Ripley's daughter scene, I dislike all of the footage added to the film-- ESPECIALLY the unnecessary and lengthy scene with Newt and her family.

As far Star Wars, there's a few that people you'll find that prefer them. Personally (and I think this a pretty common opinion) is that some of the more subtle alterations are alright, but for every one good change there's about 5 bad ones.

By the time I had seen what had been done to the Blu-Ray versions, I basically threw my hands up with the whole thing and now exclusively watch fan-made DVDs of the UOT until Disney releases them (which I still think is an eventual inevitability).

Just watched the original Star Wars on BD with somebody who hasn't seen it since he was a kid and thus remembers almost nothing but key elements (character names, the Vader twist). He pointed out the Mos Eisley CGI, pretty immediately, so it clearly stuck out, but after Han shot Greedo he said, "Han is such a badass!" I prefer the original version, but that scene still has the same effect. We'll be watching ESB soon.

At any rate, Star Wars continues to be fascinating above and beyond the stories presented on screen.
The 20th anniversary theatrical release seriously underwhelmed at the box office, which was very embarrassing for all involved, so Spielberg made sure the DVD included both cuts, and he all but disowns the 20th anniversary version these days. Says he'll never do something like that again.

It's not so bad when they improved the editing on that bit starting with the DVD edition. It's still a bit awkward but it looks like Han fires at the same time Greedo is trying to get a shot off at him. So he still kind of fires preemptively at Greedo.

The 1997 version looked really ridiculous and had Han swerve his head in a very unconvincing way.

There are a lot of people who prefer the theatrical of Aliens. In the Aliens threads it always comes up and there are plenty on both sides. It's nowhere near the "definitive" cut, they both have their fans. Same for T2.

I've never seen someone argue for the theatrical Abyss though.

There was a period in the early 2000's that I was worried it was going to be a trend for director's to go back and do "special editions" of their classic movies just for an excuse to re-release them in theaters-- in addition to E.T, there was also Ridley Scott's "director's cut" of Alien.

I think there was even rumors floating around of Spielberg and Lucas working on a special edition of the Indiana Jones movies as well. Luckily, this didn't really pan out.

Not just rumours, as an updated VFX shot made it in to a few TV screenings of Raiders a few years ago, but seeing as Lowry were able to iron out the major goofs I think that was enough to keep Lucas at bay and Spielbergo didn't wanna go there after the ET SE anyway.

Picked up this collected edition of the Marvel Star Wars comics. Han shoots Greedo even quicker in the comic.

720p or even VHS quality of Han shooting first and no "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" is better than Han ducking and Vader yelling in 1080P.

With all the recent announcement of new anniversary and film collections from Fox, who wants to bet they're also planning a Saga re-release too?

Actually, he's right. There are comparisons showing very little difference between the 720p and 1080p masters because, I believe, of how bad the job was.
