Well, the rush job would definitely explain the other issues too especially color which obviously would take sufficient time. No wonder the skintones look so off at times. A strange red-orange like look. Other times, they look fine.

How anyone OK'd this for the DVD release is still beyond me. Still shocked Lucas could be bothered to fix it for the BD release since Ewoks needed to blink and magic rocks had to be created.

It really is quite hilarious (in a sad kind of way) how poorly these - among the most beloved and successful films around - have been treated on DVD and BD. The fact that not only are we only given the latest version of the Special Editions to watch, they don't even look the best they can, far from it. Meanwhile you have these beautiful restorations of stuff that's outright obscure in many cases.

No comprende, it's a riddle.

It is kind of insane, isn't it? I get a brilliant looking 4k remaster of a piece of crap like Contamination from Arrow Video, but Star Wars? Nope! Ancient 2k masters of only one cut! In your face! Same with Back to the Future, Jurassic Park and who knows how many others.

Yeah, it's a travesty for a trilogy this big and the sad thing is, the next best opportunity to see proper treatment (of whatever version) is probably two years ago. Sigh.

Still think the best thing would be a box set with the prequels, special editions and UOT. Put it out when the trailers start hitting TV for The Force Awakens. Something like "and be sure to pick up Star Wars on blu-ray and DVD before The Force Awakens" at the end of the trailer.
ORIGINAL UNALTERED VERSION REMASTERED IN 4K FROM THE ORIGINAL FILM NEGATIVES would be pretty enticing to a lot of people, whether they cared or were even aware of the alterations or not.

Or Disney might go even farther and release some kind of Ultimate Edition that includes multiple versions of the films plus extensive extras.

It would be a pretty epic release for both Star Wars fans and general film-fans alike. I'm pretty confounded that anyone would think it wouldn't be a big deal except for a few nerds on the internet.

I know Star Wars is a bit different, but still...hasn't Disney always placed emphasis on the original versions of films versus extended editions, variations, etc.?

I suppose. They definitely offer both versions in cases of extended cuts and whatnot to my memory, but so does pretty much every other company. The only reason Star Wars hasn't had both cuts available is Lucas not wanting them to be, which is why people get so pissed at him about the SEs. It has nothing to do with their existence and everything to do with him trying to erase the originals.

Assuming Star Wars gets another fresh disc release someday I give it 50/50 on getting the original cuts. Disney might want to respect Lucas' wishes, or they might not. It's really hard to say.

There have been complaints in other threads about how Disney only releases original versions (such as Bedknobs and Broomsticks).

I recall that rumor about how Disney was working on restoring the unaltered versions but that it was a lot of work. There was no verifiable source to it, of course.

We do know Reliance has done some kind of 4K work on the originals although which versions is unknown.

Agreed, Lucas could have a say or not at all. Hard to tell.

I've said this before but I'm very skeptical that they would not release the UOT because of Lucas' past attitude about it for few reasons:

1) Disney and Lucasfilm respect Lucas but they've already made it perfectly clear they are doing things their own way-- Lucas has already stated they threw out most of his story treatments, and JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy have pretty much all but directly dissed the prequel trilogy with everything they've been saying about "practical effects" and "focusing on characters."

2) Lucas himself seemed to have lightened up about the UOT towards the end before the Disney sale, saying the new versions get "priority over what we call the classic versions."

So I doubt Lucas himself even cares if Disney releases the UOT or not. Disney is definitely keeping his versions available, as the Complete Saga set is still in circulation and they just released those same versions digitally.

I'd say it might have been disrespectful to Lucas if they immediately pulled the current versions and tried to bury them as if it didn't happen, but thats clearly not the case.

I personally am optimistic about a restored UOT release with Disney in charge-- to me its more a matter of when rather than if. It depends on how long it takes to restore them, and also when they want to strategically release them from a marketing perspective. I would have thought pre-Episode VII would have been a good idea, especially since they are pushing everybody's attention back to the old-school style of the originals anyway. However, it's likely that there just wasn't enough time to meet that deadline.

What's hilarious though, is that the Prequels will have used more "practical" effects than The Force Awakens. So much of what you see in those movies are models, miniatures, and many practical effects and sets composited digitally seamlessly. And don't bring up green screen because the original trilogy featured an enormous amount of green screen work for their time, so much so that actors like Fisher and Ford complained about it regularly in interviews. Abrams pandering to the fans with this "practical effects" nonsense is pathetic.

In addition to the steelbooks, the complete trilogy is getting re-released with different artwork.

Yay.

Haha, and people still think we're gonna get the original originals before Ep VII? That's a negatory. This set is the expected pre-Ep VII cash-in which repackages the old discs, no more no less. Those steels do look lovely though...

Don't get me wrongo, I think there's a very good chance of the UOT happening - or at the very least a release of the 4K remastered version, whatever cuts they may be - but with the anniversary of the first film less than two years away they'd be insane to release them now.

The steelbooks look slick and it looks they'll be using a standard 9-disc case instead of the fold-out book style they used for The Complete Saga, which is nice.

Yoda does kind of stick out though, since the rest of the steelbooks all feature villains.

I'm sure this couldn't be a thing due to rights and whatnot, but I would've jumped on the re-packaged Complete Saga if it had space to add The Force Awakens.
