It's pretty standard practice to promote a new film. Terminator and Jurassic Park got repackaged discs before their new installments this year, too. Not sure why that's offensive.

Just because Lucas utterly and irrefutably lost the ability to make anything resembling a decent movie a few decades ago doesn't mean you should take it out on this thread's innocent posters.

It's not really nerve, the suckers don't have to buy anything they don't want to and personally I've come to accept that not every new release is aimed at me, they're aimed at new fans and to promote the franchise.

I only get annoyed when they release special-editions with new transfers months after the original release!

And to also be fair, even though I don't have one bit of interest in buying these, people have been saying "Gee I wish they had single movie steel books" since the first set came out.

I'm honestly really just hoping that the old set drops in price significantly, especially if there isn't really a difference except for box art.

I'm betting the old set is finally discontinued once this new set comes out. Though I'd heard that had happened already, even though it's still in stock pretty much everywhere. This repackaging is just another cash grab by Fox, but I do like the new packaging much more than the first set's, which is atrocious. The art, the book and sleeve design, just terrible. I received it as a gift and hate dealing with it (only do when one of my kids wants to watch a prequel, other wise we watch the Despecialized OT every time). No way am I paying money for a set that doesn't include the UOT.

And to be fair, this isn't a trend that's unique to Star Wars. In fact, people talk about how all they do is milk Star Wars fans and I just don't see it.

I can't really speak the VHS releases beyond the regular and then the special editions, but that makes sense to have two releases there.

DVDs just had two releases: the original in 2004. And the single issue releases in 2006.

Then Blu-Ray had the one issue in 2011 and then now in 2015.

I don't think it's obscene for them to release twice within a cycle. I've seen triple and quadruple dips on titles in the DVD era. It's weird the attention that Star Wars gets for doing something that's basically par for the course. And at least this time they're not adding anything unique in terms of bonus features as they did with the 2006 release.

It is so disheartening that on the internet there almost seems to be more hate than love for Star Wars on the whole. It's an odd, bizarre thing.

On topic though, if I was independently wealthy, I would 100% buy this. They look fantastic. As it stands right now, I'm not. So my original set will have to do.

For the umpteenth time, these are not put out with the idea that the primary market is people who already have them will buy them again (although Fox/Disney certainly won't mind if you do). They're put out because as a "new release", they get publicity, reviewed, get highlighted on the home pages of e-commerce sites and get promoted in physical retail as a new release. That results in sales to consumers who never bought them before. Sure, there will always be completists who want everything and I'm sure that's factored into the sales forecasts as well, but it's primarily about finding new consumers.

That's why the studios put out new anniversary editions, even if it's the same old disc. The record industry does this all the time as well.

I doubt Disney will be benefiting much from this (that would explain the lack of ANY new content). Since Fox still has home video distribution rights of the existing home video versions, I'd bet they doesn't have to share in the profits with Disney. There are no Disney logo's present on the artwork. Anyway, Fox would be insane NOT to try and cash in on the Force Awakens merchandising hype train.

Disney's only benefit is from Lucasfilm's returns on this set. Disney may have nudged Lucasfilm to prod Fox to repromote these films on Blu-ray for Episode VII's release. However, Disney's actual real net gain is only through Lucasfilm. Disney actually makes more money on the digital releases as five of the six films are distributed by them.

I doubt Fox needed any prodding. They're going to capitalize on every opportunity to re-release the films they can.

That's not how distribution works. Either Disney gets all the revenue and pays Fox a distribution fee or Fox gets all the revenue and pays the content owner, now Disney, a royalty. It's most likely the latter. There could also be advances and guarantees tied to each re-release.

According to the steelbook thread, the art on the back is NOT of hero characters. It is one-sheet art. They should have used it on the fronts and used the characters on the backs. :P

Now Obi Wan's lightsaber matches Luke's green one in ANH on the Falcon.

They should make Yoda blue for the steelbook to be consistent.

What do we have to do to get the original trilogy cuts in HD? Fans would rejoice. The studios make money. Isn't it a win/win?
I said the same thing when the digital versions came out, but this makes perfect sense from business perspective. I honestly don't blame Disney or Lucasfilm for doing it this way.

Look, Disney paid a crap-ton of money for Star Wars, right? They're going to maximize how much money they make on it. When they purchased Lucasfilm, they basically inherited the current masters created for the Blu-Ray release. It's only natural that they would start off by making as much money off of those as they can initially before going back and doing a new release.

Because casting aside opinions on the alterations, everyone can agree that the quality of the Blu-rays are mediocre and leave a lot to be desired. The UOT has old scans, Phantom Menace has DNR, etc. They're not horrible but not exactly what Star Wars deserves.

Now, there's only been speculation so far, but the word is Disney IS working on new remasters of the films. From what it sounds like to me, they're remastering the original negatives in 4K, which happen to exist right now as the 1997 Special Editions. My personal guess is that they're using that as a starting point to also restore the UOT.

If these rumors are true, it would mean they aren't going to be ready for prime-time before Episode VII. Which could be good thing, since it would mean they want to do it right and aren't just half-assing it to get it out before December. But in the meantime, they are definitely going to capitalize on what they already have available to sell (The Complete Saga Blu-Ray edition/HD digital editions).

I wouldn't expect an unaltered trilogy release until Episode 9 comes out. They will probably do a huge boxed set with "everything". With each new movie though, expect another re-release of the same old stuff. After all, that's how George did it and it worked every time. Why should Disney be any different?

Huh, I really like the look and feel of the original complete saga set. The art for the final bonus disc was kind of weird, but the rest of it looks lovely.
