Are they new transfers? looks like the highlight is the new packaging, and a good part of the extras are commentaries, anyway.

Usually when a movie comes out with standard - to poor PQ/AQ, I believe that down the line there will always be another release (Gladiator is an example of the extreme). Sometimes in the next release the studio will even subtract something and reserve it for future editions.

Empire of Dreams, for example. If it can be converted to HD, I'm sure they're keeping it for another BD release, maybe even Ultra BD.

All 9 discs from the 2011 set are being reused for this re-packaging. Zero additional content.

Books and comics never matter like movies do. If they ever revive him in the movies I'll be pretty annoyed. He died in that pit, end of story. A prequel would be fine.

Haven't we learned our lesson regarding Star Wars and prequels yet?

I think anyone with a brain knows that stuff isn't in any way canonical.

Plus, in current canon, Darth Maul survived. He showed up in a bunch of Clone Wars episodes which the almighty gods of Lucasfilm have declared as canon. So there is precedent for seemingly dead characters to return. And Fett only fell into a pit. Maul was sliced in half. That's persistence.

It really doesn't, since no-one's discussing it here right now and it seems like you're just baiting people for the sake of it. But thanks for the spamming anyway.

There's a good chance that there will be new releases with new transfers, but these aren't them.

The original trilogy are more or less the masters used for the DVDs, The Phantom Menace is the new transfer which was created for the Blu-ray (and the 3D release) and Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith will more or less always look the same as they were created in 1080p or 2K.

Star Wars isn't Gladiator, you just can't put out a new BD from a new scan or transfer because you cock-up the first encoding. You have to spend serious time and money on the thing. You have to create new effects and re-composite old ones, it's a mammoth task.

Adding Empire of Dreams in HD would have been a nice bonus disc. There are excerpts on Star Wars' YouTube channel. If they'd been really crafty they could have spread it out over six discs and made us buy the complete set (or worse a digital download code!), but I don't think Empire of Dreams' fans are the target audience for the Steelbook range.

Nada is on a crusade to make everyone believe the prequels are the greatest movies ever conceived. Was basically told to piss off in the Episode VII thread by a moderator. Guess he is coming to infect this thread now.

The novels are all fanfiction. They were written by fans and are set in Lucas' universe.

Personally, I think Disney made the right call by removing them officially because they aren't able to clog up their vision of the universe.

Fon Davis, ILM Model Maker - Extended Interview - YouTube

Yet the prequels still look like bad 90's - early 2000's video game cutscenes. Despite how beautiful any of the prequels' practical sets and miniatures were prior to Lucas and shooting crew showing up on set, nothing can fix how poorly written, acted, shot, directed and edited they were.

I'm not trying to start any PT-bashing, but I honestly think the CG holds up mostly fine. Even under the extra scrutiny of Blu-ray, I was surprised that aside from the some of the CG characters, it all holds up well. I dunno how people can compare it to 90s/videogame-style graphics, they might not be as good as today's VFX but I don't find them distracting.
