No, it really was Frank operating the puppet. I think the point they were making re: Ep I's Yoda is that the puppet itself didn't move like the old one did, like the subtle wobbling of his ears and stuff like that. [edit] That's right, because of how the new one was designed and fabricated it just didn't respond to Frank's puppeteering the way the old one did, where he'd make him frown (or whatever) by simply scrunching his hand up, and it's that sort of backwards engineering that they used to create the CG version.

No it actually just faded away. Same thing happened to Alec Guinness when he shit the bed several years back.

It's kind of strange - I've seen AOTC about 3 times now and I remember literally nothing about it. I vaguely remember some big lightsaber fight but beside that I cannot tell you one thing that happens in it (that I'm certain isn't in one of the other films). I don't know if it's the worst prequel, but it's certainly the least memorable.

I'm never sure which one is worse, and I've never been able to declare one or the other. I think they're both bad movies overall, but in somewhat different ways.

The Phantom Menace is just overall a much duller movie. It has flat and lifeless dialog, and IMO is boring all the way until the last 20 minutes or so (No, I did not really find the pod-racing scene all that entertaining).

Attack of the Clones isn't as boring, its got more exciting scenes more often (Coruscant chase, Obi Wan vs. Jango Fett, giant battle on Geonosis)and a couple of dramatically effective parts (Anakin gets mad and kills sand people). On the other hand, the bad, cringy stuff is far worse than almost anything in Phantom Menace.

I guess I would say I think The Phantom Menace is the harder movie to sit through, but I'm not sure about "worse." Even so, god help me, I would buy the movie again if Disney/Lucasfilm released a better remastered edition of the original theatrical version.

I think they overthought it basically, trying to make him younger and more vibrant but actually making him look way worse. I defend practical effects until the sun goes down but that Phantom Menace puppet looks dreadful.

Yeah, it's only 30-something years (out of 800-odd!) later that we see him in Empire yet for some reason they really went overboard on making him look way younger. And the change from the old latex puppet to the new silicon design was something that they thought would be a huge step forward but instead it regressed the performance because it wasn't as expressive as the old puppet.

But, weirdo that I am, I'm kinda used to seeing the puppet there in Phantom Menace, no matter how goofy it looks. Whenever I watch the BD (which ain't often, granted) I'm thrown off by the CG version. Still, the transition from the puppet to the more traditional looking CG design between Ep I and II is another thing that always made me feel like TPM is that much more 'disconnected' from the rest, so you'd think I'd be grateful for the alteration to the CG version in Ep I. Mercurial is probably the best way to describe my feelings towards the prequels.

It would've been even more shocking if he had said Luke, I am your uncle.

Apropos of nothing, I had no idea that the UK DVDs were re-released with the drool-worthy Struzan poster art in June this year. Note the lack of episode numbers as well, I wonder why LFL have done that? Could it have been to do with dropping the numbers from the marketing of the new movie, say?
