![]() Like why on earth was it a great idea to have Luke "hide" back on his dads old planet with his aunt and uncle and still keep the Skywalker name. Like that wouldn't be the first place to look for your child? ![]() But I just looked at it as not keeping all your eggs in one basket. Safer to separate them than keep them together, bit like how the royal family never travel on the same flights together in case there's an accident. |

I checked the last few pages and didn't see these mentioned, but I'm sure as a way to get some momentum off of TFA, Bad Lip Reading has made 3 new videos:

It's all about respecting the art. If he had offered us the original cuts at least then I would shrug it off, like I do with Blade Runner or whatever else. However since he purposely withheld them, even supposedly messing with the negatives to make an original restoration more difficult (and was such an ass about it when questioned) I'm gonna call it all what it is: messing with other peoples' art, which is uncool. |

And that's the crux of the argument. Look at what Ridley Scott did with Blade Runner. There are 5 cuts available. All director approved. Pick whichever one suits you. If Lucas had just done this with the original trilogy... happy faces all around.

I'm pretty sure it was a reference to the Dino De Laurentiis production (I can't quite recall), but it might have been for earlier remake attempts. It was one of the articles/essays in a book on King Kong I recently read, fans were very protective of the movie since it's release back in the thirties.

I remember there was talk that the negatives were dismantled (which never really made sense to me) when they did the special editions, so the originals don't even exist anymore, but I think if new Lucasfilm ever do go back in to restore them, they'll be doing something similar to what happened with The Next Generation, they'll be scanning separate elements (and effects' passes) and digitally compositing them. But that's assuming that all those elements have survived. The results would be spectacular and far surpass any presentations we've see so far, either on the big screen or home video.

There's another issue with getting UOT out on blu-ray- legally, Disney can't. Fox still has the theatrical and home video rights to ESB and ROTJ until 2020. Star Wars they out and out own, so unless Disney and Fox can reach an agreement, it is just not happening for a while.
Me being me, yeah, I do want the UOT out so I can enjoy them. The SEs have their place, but the constant tinkering all the way up through the blu-rays are what finally broke me as a fan. I just want my movies, not revision six out of seven, which you will pay for because you want it. |

Disney/Lucasfilm can release any damn version of original trilogy Star Wars they want - it will simply be distributed by Fox until 2020 (although A New Hope will still remain in distribution with Fox after). |

Since FOX owns the distribution rights they could refuse to let Disney release a new version until 2020 if they wanted to also. I think it would be funny. Disney wants to release a box set with the first six and the new one and Fox declines because they just want the current set to sell.

While I would love to see a good release of the original version of the original trilogy, this conversation does make me laugh too. We see alternate versions of other films released all the time that replace the original theatrical cuts and no one seems to care about those. Why does no one complain that the theatrical cut of Highlander hasn't been released? Because it isn't Star Wars. If it is Star Wars, then it is a big deal but if it is a less successful or liked film, then meh - no big deal. It isn't about releasing what was originally released or the director's cut or anything like that, it is about releasing the version you like best. I am like everyone else, I would love to see the original version on Blu-ray but in the end, Lucas owned them and could do whatever he wanted with them. I don't see these kinds of complaints asking Windows to bring back XP because it was so much better than we have now. Does it make him a bit of a hypocrite? For sure but then again, success and money tends to do that to people.

I don't think it works like that. Lucasfilm would put out the sets and give Fox a cut of the proceeds. The distribution rights are just a way to spread the profits from a movie, Fox don't even have to get physically involved, they just get a cut of whatever Lucasfilm do.
