I believe it's supposed to give you the feeling of being dropped in the middle of the action. It just fails spectacularly.

But he already has several "foreground wipes" from droids and people. So weird, right? Upon further reflection, I honestly believe that one of the "humans" crossing in the FG (of the old, un-molested shot) must've been someone George had a falling out with... literally must've been Gary Kurtz or some grip Lucas now hates, and he wanted to obliterate that person's STAR WARS cameo with a giant lizard. I bet that's it.

Every other "special edition" shot I can kinda see Lucas' intentions, even if I don't agree with them -- including the HORRIBLE rock that appears and disappears in front of Artoo. I mean, I "get" why he tried to put that rock there. But this giant lizard thing in the foreground? Anyone have any ideas? Is there a problem or issue with the landspeeder pulling up that Lucas decided to mask? I sure can't see it.
His intention with all of the added Mos Eisley stuff was to make the port feel busier and "fuller." The reasons those big lizards were added into the shot was to make you feel like the space was overcrowded and teeming with busy aliens and creatures going every which way.

I prefer the original, more desolate Mos Eisley, largely because the 1997 CGI effects really don't hold up very well. Plus, some of added shots, like the bit with the Jawas swinging around, were very much an indicator of the goofy juvenile humor that would permeate Episode I.

But it did have a purpose I understood, even if I thought it was unnecessary. I even understood the DVD alterations, to make things sync up with the prequels. But the Blu-Ray stuff? The rocks, the bigger door at Jabba's palace, making the one Ewok blink-- that was just weird. It made me think Lucas kind of had an OCD problem with the films and would just change random things on the fly.

Oh I totally understand the thinking behind all the added "hustle & bustle" of the spaceport (and I totally agree with "preferring the more desolate Mos Eisley")... but a digital lizard-skin across the foreground of a perfectly good shot that already had a few foreground wipes (droids and people)??? That's what doesn't make sense to me. Makes me think there was something "wrong" in Lucas' mind about the original shot that he wanted to blot out. Some bit of clunky effects revealed in the landspeeder approach, which I'm not seeing... or, like I said in my last post, some background extra that Lucas wanted to edit out, for whatever reason. A lot of the Mos Eisley choices are questionable, but that one damn foreground lizard is downright strange. I'm tellin' ya... I bet he wanted to edit somebody out of the picture.

Or maybe he wanted to show off his "Jurassic Park" effects. The guy is just pitifully obsessed with CGI, there's not really a rational explanation.

The Rontos are re-purposed brachiosaur models from JP, weren't they?

Another quick observation... Sorry to be going on a number of different STAR WARS tangents, but I've been re-watching the saga over the last week (paralleling the TNT broadcasts, but watching my blu-rays in the home theater). I'm amazed at how much I enjoy "episode order" of all seven movies now, when just a year and a half ago I despised the prequels with every cell in my body.

HOWEVER... I'm equally amazed at the epiphany I had today, after viewing STAR WARS (Episode IV -- NEW HOPE) for the millionth time in my life. So freaking good. TOO good, in fact, to watch the prequels again any time soon. In other words... no matter how much I admire the thought behind the machete order or the "flashback" order (IV, V, [I optional], II, III, VI, VII)... I could NEVER watch it that way. That order brings back all my hatred of the prequels. 'Cuz here's the thing: after I watched IV today, I caught a snippet of III on TNT, and it looked riDICulous to me; terrible. Even though I'd just enjoyed Episode III a couple days ago, it suddenly paled in comparison to the classic original.

For me, the saga definitely only works in episode order. I thoroughly enjoy I-III in that context, but wow... once you get to the quality level of IV and V, there's no going back. Just my 2-cents as a lifelong fan. YMMV

For STAR WARS fans in the San Francisco bay area, the Mill Valley Film Festival is having a STAR WARS DAY on Saturday, Oct. 8th. They'll be showing the Special Editions of the original trilogy in the giant Century Cinema, in Corte Madera... a theater where all the ILM employees would regularly have their big premiere screenings after completing work on a movie. Great and iconic venue, which is apparently being closed down in this sad world of ours.

Costume contest, Lucasfilm-sponsored trivia, introduction to EMPIRE STRIKES BACK by Ben Burtt, and the ROGUE ONE trailer on the big screen. I'm even considering the six hour drive up from Los Angeles. Considering... just considering. (If it was the original theatrical versions of the Trilogy, I'd be there in a heartbeat.)

Here's the official website and ticket info:

The Empire Strikes Back Actor Ian Liston (pilot Wes Janson) Has Died

Quote:
5 OCTOBER 2016
WE REGRET TO ANNOUNCE THAT IAN LISTON HAS DIED. HE WOULD HAVE WISHED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE WORK OF THE ROYAL MARSDEN HOSPITAL WHERE HE WAS PROUD TO HAVE TAKEN PART IN EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENTS THAT NOT ONLY PROLONGED HIS LIFE BUT PROMISE TO DO THE SAME FOR MANY FUTURE VICTIMS OF PROSTATE CANCER.
MAY THE FORCE BE WITH HIM.

Apparently Lucas was trying ride the Jurassic Park wave at the time for his 97 re release when audiences could not get enough of dinosaurs.

As you can tell, the giant turd lizard cgi mess did not age well at all.

I am still surprised he didn't make the lizard fart when it walked by for the blu-rays.

Surprised he didn't have the lizard do a poopy on the screen and have CGI Jar Jar wipe it off.

I can only assume you never post anything serious in here, at this point.

If Lucas had added farting noises would you have been surprised? Be honest now.

When the UOT is released I will have lots of nice things to say. Until then what else is there to comment on?
